Bio:ErikDeCorteisEmeritusProfessor(ofEducationalPsychology)intheFacultyofPsychologyandEducationalSciencesattheUniversityofLeuven,BelgiumwherehechairedfromAugust1994tillJuly1998theDepartmentofEducationalSciences.Hismajorresearchinterestistocontributetothedevelopmentoftheoriesoflearningfrominstructionandthedesignofpowerfullearningenvironments,focusingtherebyonlearning,teaching,andassessmentofthinkingandproblemsolving.HewasthefirstPresident(1985-1989)oftheEuropeanAssociationforResearchonLearningandInstruction(EARLI).Duringtheacademicyear2005-2006hestayedasaFellowattheCenterforAdvancedStudyintheBehavioralSciencesatStanford.KeynoteTitle:“Learningdesign:Creatingpowerfultechnology-supportedlearningenvironments”Abstract:The interdisciplinary research in the learning scienceshasand still does substantially contribute tomeetthecurrentneedfornewenvironmentsforlearningbydevelopingandelaboratingnewperspectivesontheultimategoalofschooleducation,andonthenatureoflearningtoachievethisgoal.InthispresentationIwillfirstbrieflyreviewsuchaperspective.AgainstthisbackgroundIwilldiscussthecurrentstate-of-the-artoftheuseoftechnologyforlearningintoday’sclassrooms,itsshortcomingsandneededdirectionsforthefuture.Thiswillbefollowedbythepresentationofanexampleoflearningdesign,namelyadesignexperimentinwhichtechnologywas used productively in fifth- and sixth-grade classrooms in the format of computer-supportedcollaborative learning. In the last part Iwill focus on the latest cutting-edge use of educational technology,namelytheMOOCs(MassiveOpenOnlineCourses).
