WelcomeDear colleagues,

It is a great honor to welcome you all to the AOCMF International Symposium on Head and Neck Cancer.

This symposium aims to summarize and update our current knowledge of head and neck cancer. Great emphasis will be placed on the core aspects of multidisciplinary care of patients suffering from this disease and on personalized treatment. Over the symposium of these two days we will review the most recent advances in translational research and discuss state-of-the-art head and neck cancer therapy from an oncological, radiotherapeutical, surgical as well as clinical point of view.

The progress made in head and neck cancer therapy in recent years has led to an improved understanding of the biology of cancer, from the cellular and molecular level through to the genetic, resulting in the development of new targeting agents. Furthermore a parallel development in surgery has moved to the more precise and safe micro-vascular reconstruction. Similarly, the advances in radiotherapy have enabled radiation oncologists to target tumors more precisely thereby minimizing damage to healthy tissue.

We believe that this symposium will play a significant role in educating, updating and inspiring physicians working in the field of head and neck cancer. The in-depth discussions will aim to provoke a lively exchange between colleagues, both the experienced and less experienced, and stimulate new ideas that will remain with you long after the symposium has finished.

Take the opportunity to strengthen old ties and also to form new collaborations providing you with excellent opportunities to network.

We hope that our program will attract and engage you through the assembly of prominent speakers, interesting topics and also its attractive location.

This symposium should be one to remember and we look forward to seeing you in September 2012.

AOCMF International Symposium on Head and Neck Cancer 3

Goal of the symposiumTo summarize and update your current know-• ledge of head and neck cancer, its manage-ment and the newest research findings.

To exchange information and opinions, • share research results and perspectives with leaders in the head and neck cancer field.

To provide opportunities to form new collabo-• rations and professional networks.

Symposium objectivesOn completion of this symposium the partici-pants will have:

gained knowledge of the latest develop-• ments in the head and neck cancer and its management

enhanced their sensitivity for interdiscip-• linary approaches in the treatment of head and neck cancer patients

achieved a new insight into the critical • importance of personalized medicine

Symposium descriptionThis is a two-day event during which presenta-tions will be given by prominent experts in head and neck cancer. The event will consist of four sessions, two per day (Translational Research, New Insights from Clinical Trials in Head and Neck Cancer, Site-Specific Management, Advan-ces in Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery). After each session there will be an expert panel discussion.

Target audience• Maxillofacial surgeons

• ENTs

• Plastic and reconstructive surgeons

• Oncologists

• Radiation oncologists

• Physicians and researchers who are interested in head and neck cancer

The AO Principles of fracture management

Fracture reduction and fixation to restore anatomical

relationships.

Preservation of the blood sup-ply to soft tissues and bone by gentle reduction techniques and careful handling.

Fracture fixation providing absolute or relative stability, as required by the “personality” of the fracture, the patient and the injury.

Early and safe mobilization and rehabilitation of the

injured part and the patient as a whole.
