Dear FASD Conference Participants:
On behalf of the over 12,000 members of the National Staff Development
Council and the Councils Trustees and staff, I extend NSDC's greetings
and best wishes for another outstanding FASD conference.
I commend FASD for its more than 30 years of leadership in professional
learning in Florida. Without a doubt, FASD plays a significant role in help-
ing NSDC achieve its purpose: Every educator engages in effective profes-
sional learning every day so every student achieves. FASD has long led
the charge that professional learning results in improvements in student
learning. The recent report from the Florida DOE provides powerful evi-dence of this assertion.
It is my hope that you will use this conference and your membership in
FASD to assist you with your efforts to advance NSDCs purpose. Please
take advantage of the many opportunities for building awareness of new
findings, practicing new skills, and considering how you will apply new
learning to your daily work.
Thank you for your support of FASD and for your commitment to high levels
of performance for your students and colleagues. Congratulations to the

General Session Speakers
Communicating, whether it be one-on-one or one-to-five hundred, is becoming a necessary skill not only for educators but members of the corporate world as well. In-
formation is power, and as we attempt to empower others we must become more
clear and effective in the way we present that information.This session will be highl
interactive and brain-compatible. Key points of effective presenting will be explored
and analyzed.
Dr. Estes is the President of Estes Group, Inc., an independent learning consultant who resides
in Sherman, Texas. She is a former high school teacher, middle school principal, and Curricu-
lum/Public Relations Director. She graduated from Texas A & M UniversityCommerce with
a doctorate in Educational Administration.
She has provided administrative training to more than 1600 superintendents, principals, central
office staff and trustees of eighty-two school districts. Dr. Estes offers a variety of training in thareas of leadership and effective presentations. Dr. Estes is recognized as a conference keynote speaker and presenter and
has worked with people of all orientations-educators, parents, community members, businesspersons, corporate leaders and
conference participants, Dr. Estes is known for her warmth, humor, and ability to involve everyone in the joy of learning.

ohn Kuglin will use his 30+ years of diverse experience in K-12 classrooms, higher educa
tion, and corporate America to create a new understanding for 21st century technologies
and learning for professional development. Effective use of technology for presentationsand for follow-up will be highlighted.
USA Todayselected him as one of ten teachers nationwide to be named as a USA Today Power
Teacher. He was named one of the Top 25 Education Technology Advocates in the United
States by District Administrator magazine. He also co-wrote and served as the host for a ten-
part technology series on The Learning Channelcalled Best Seat in the Class, as well as numer-
ous other nationally televised teacher in-service programs. He has been recognized as a tech-
nology guru; was named as one of the Top 25 Education Technology Advocates in the United
States byDistrict Administratormagazine. He also has been featured on CNN for his innovative
uses of technology in his classroom. He brings 30 combined years of experience in education,
telecommunications, television production, and Internet technology to these efforts.
John Kuglin began his career as a teacher and then was promoted to Technology Director in Missoula, Montana.Early in his career, he developed and directed two nationally known technology-training centers. John then served as Senior
Director of Technology for McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning) as part of the U.S. Department o
Education's research and development lab system which serves all 50 states and 20 foreign countries. John is currently the
Director of Technology for the Eagle County School District in Eagle, Colorado.

What are Concurrent Sessions? Concurrent sessions consist of 1-2 hour sessions designedto provide updated information, resources, best practices, or support regarding the latest De-partment of Education legislation, current state/national initiatives, Protocol standards, orpriority needs of staff developers at the district, school, and faculty levels. Participantschoose from a menu of selected topics during the concurrent session times. Many sessions
will be repeated. Check the Program Agenda to verify which sessions will be presented morethan once.
We design the concurrent sessions to meet not only the needs of different role-alike groupsbut also address different district sizes as well.
Which ones should I attend? Choose the sessions that best meet your needs. If you comewith a team of colleagues, divide up, and attend different sessions. Come back and share allof your collected ideas and information with one another and with your district. Many ses-sions are repeated. Many of the session materials will be posted on the FASD website fol-lowing the conference, and you are welcome to email the presenters for more information.
What are the Focus Strands? Through our data-driven research, the FASDLC PlanningCommittee and FASD Board introduced our two-year theme 2008-2010 as Leadership forLearning. We wanted to create learning venues that addressed important and challenging needsof our stakeholders through consistent and continuous learning initiatives over a two-year pe-riod, threading specific learning topics through FASD Spring Forums and FASD LeadershipConferences. Look for the following topic strands within the descriptions of the concurrentsessions. Specific learning strands will focus on the following:

Learning to Support Quality Teacher and School Leadership, and
Learning to Support New Teachers.

Explore the development of a technology-driven system that empowers schools to enhance instruction by identify-ing PD needs and customizing teacher support. Miami-Dade Public Schools recently developed several tools that identifytargeted PD needs and monitoring support. The Professional Development through Data-based Decisions (PD3) tool allowsadministrators to assess, classroom-by-classroom, PD needs in core academic areas and efficiently deploy PD resources asneeded. The PD Support Services log, in turn, monitors the level and effectiveness of PD support by collecting data on re-cording areas targeted and frequency of support delivered, while highlighting school-wide patterns for PD needs and services.

Florida, with its numerous routes to obtaining a standard teaching certificate, has been a national leader in develop-ing and offering competency-based alternative routes for the preparation of teachers for its classrooms. On an annual ba-sis, the Florida Department of Education surveys all completers of teacher preparation programs in Florida, (includingthose teachers who have completed alternative routes), their school principals, and peer mentors in order to examine thelevel of preparedness of new teachers to meet the challenges of todays classrooms. This presentation will focus on theresults of these surveys and a brief examination of other studies being conducted in Florida.

The Teachers and Teaching Initiative (TTI), established by the Council for Educational Change and funded by theWachovia Foundation, focuses on the development, support, and retention of new-to-service teachers. Since its inception,the program has featured a site-based collaborative mentoring component in which veteran teacher-leaders nurture andsupport a new generation of educators through personal support, demonstration of effective teaching strategies, feedbackfor mentees on their teaching, guidance on classroom management, and access to cutting-edge, research-based online learn-ing. The result of the Councils effort is a 98% percent retention rate of new-to-service teachers - higher than state andnational averages.

Leadership For Learning
FASD Has a Two-Year Theme2008 2010
The FASDLC Planning Committee and the Board spent a weekend together this past Fall 2007
collecting and analyzing data to determine priority professional development needs for Florida educators
who are dedicated to improving learning for ALL. Our goal was to build a two-year theme that focused
on critical areas that aligned to NSDC priority goals, Florida Department of Education goals, and FASDs
Mission and Vision. Our second goal was to scaffold these learning experiences so professionals could
continue to build on prior knowledge in specific areas that affected student achievement in the state of
Florida.
One of the data pieces we used to determine our two-year theme and strands was last years
FASDLC 2007 member evaluations. We looked for key initiatives to support you personally in your pro-
fession and in your work place. Through our data-driven research, we are excited to introduce our theme
for the 2008-2010 and our three priority strands.
Theme: Leadership for LearningStrands:
Learning State-of-the-Art Delivery Methods and Follow-Up
Learning to Support Quality Teacher and School Leadership, and
Learning to Support New Teachers.
