  • A follow up of a National Seminar, “Safe the Regional Autonomy”, held by KPEN (National Economic Recovery Committ ee), CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies), and LPEM-FEUI (Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics University of Indonesia) at 7th of December, 2000, the said agencies intensively discussed and agreed upon establishment of an independent agency to monitor implementation of regional autonomy that was then named Regional Autonomy Watch Committ ee (KPPOD).

In its development, some other agencies have joined through participation of their leader fi gures as founding fathers: Prasetiya Mulya Business School, The Jakarta Post, Bisnis Indonesia, and Suara Pembaruan newspapers. Looking at the background of the founder agencies, it can be said that KPPOD is born as an experimental result of cooperation

between business sector, academics, and mass media as three important pillars in social life in Indonesia at present.

As a base of thinking to inspire its professional works, KPPOD values decentralisation and regional autonomy as the policies that are aimed to change government management structure from centralism to decentralism, and at the same time shifting the development patt ern that is dominated by the State to such condition that provides more openly, opportunities to communities and private sectors. Therefore, every government policy should refl ect a real commitment to encourage involvement of the society and private sector in regional development.

Regarding areas of issue, KPPOD focuses its monitoring on every matt ers pertaining to policies and public services in the economy and decentralisation policy/regional autonomy in general. Through the use of multi-perspective approach (economy, politics, law, and public administration), KPPOD conducts study, advocacy, and technical assistance for quality improvement, economic management, and democratic governance practices in the regions.
