About EMS

EMS stands for Electronic Muscle Stimulation.This treatment consists of deliveringelectrical impulses through the skin into thenerve fibres and muscles that lie beneath.Skin contact is made via surface electrodesplaced on the body. The EMS unit will thenstimulate the muscles to contract and relax.

NOTE

Before using EMS, if you have any questionsabout a particular condition or if problemsarise, please seek advice from your physicianor therapist.

What can be EMS be used for?

Toning and strengthening all muscle groupsfor athletic training, bodybuilding and sportsinjuries, after pregnancy, weight loss, cosmeticpurposes, chronic back pain and incontinence.

EMS can also be used to tone specific musclegroups after immobilisation of fractures andsoft tissue injuries.

� CH1 INTENSITY key – press the ‘CH1INTENSITY’ key, (up arrow) to increase or(down arrow) to decrease the intensity.

� CH2 INTENSITY key – press the ‘CH2INTENSITY’ key (up arrow) to increase or(down arrow) to decrease the intensity.

� USER DISPLAY This is the LCD displaywhich keeps you informed about themodes and settings you are using.

� JACK PLUG sockets. This is where theleadwires are connected to the unit.

� ON/OFF key – press the ‘ON/OFF’ key toturn the unit on and off. The outputintensity in both channels starts at zerowhen the unit is switched on.

� FREQUENCY key – press the ‘FREQ’ key toincrease or decrease the frequency,otherwise known as pulse rate (up arrow)to increase or (down arrow) to decreasefrequency.

� TIMER button, enables the Profile EMSto switch off automatically, if required. Toadjust the time you wish your treatmentto last, press either the up arrow or downarrow on the Time key. Once you havethe correct time, press the Timer keyagain to confirm.

� MODE – press the ‘MODE’ key to changethe operating mode. After changingmode the intensity will automatically dropto zero to ensure comfort and safety.

TIME key – press the ‘TIME’ (+) and (-)keys after pressing the ‘TIMER’ key toselect the desired setting. See 7 above.

Display Symbols and their Meaning

Channel 2intensity indicator

Channel 1 intensity indicator

Frequency indicator –indicates the currentfrequency (pulse rate)

Mode indicator -indicates the mode inuse. Only one of theseseven modes will bedisplayed at any onetime

Flashing electrode icon indicates whenelectrodes are notattached to skin - see page 7

Timer – indicates the timersetting in minutes, ordisplays ‘C’ to indicate theunit will stay on untilswitched off manually

Pulse width indicator –indicates the current pulsewidth (depending on mode)

Waveform indicator – indicatesthe current waveform (dependson mode)

MemoryWhen the unit is switched off it will rememberits previous settings. These will be restoredwhen the unit is next switched on.

Factory DefaultThe unit initially powers up in Constant Modeand when the batteries are replaced.

Automatic Power OffThe unit will switch off automatically if theintensity on both channels is at zero and theunit has not been used for approximately5 minutes.

Load DetectorWhen there is no contact between the deviceand human skin, it is only possible to increasethe intensity output to level 2. Should thishappen, the flashing electrode icon willappear on the LCD display.

Low Battery DetectionWhen the batteries fall below 2.2v 0.2v aflashing battery icon will appear on thedisplay.

Check the following contents: The Assembly Stage

a) The battery compartment is found on thefront of the unit and is marked by aribbed triangle. Open by gently pressingon the ribbed section with the thumb.

b) Insert batteries, ensuring the positive (+)and negative (-) terminals are in thecorrect position as marked in the batterycompartment. Replace battery cover.

c) With the unit switched off, insert theleadwire pin ends into the electrodes andthe Jack plug ends into sockets found onthe side of the unit. See diagram on page 4.

1. Turn on your Profile EMS by means of theON/OFF button. The unit starts in theConstant Mode initially.

2. Choose the mode you wish to use bypressing the mode button until the modeyou require shows on the LCD screen.Details of the functions of each mode areset out later in this booklet.

3. Slowly increase the intensity using theintensity controls. See diagram on page 4.

4. If you stimulate for a number of hours, itis advisable to check that your electrodeshave not become too dry as this couldcause minor skin irritation. If thishappens, dampen them slightly.

5. When you have finished stimulating, turnoff the unit by means of the ON/OFFbutton.

6. Ensure that the unit is switched off beforeremoving the leads. Do not pull theleadwires. Remove leads by holding thejack plugs between the forefinger andthumb.

The ‘MODE’ key is used to select theoperating mode. As a safety feature, after anymode change the intensity will drop to zero.There are seven modes available on the BodyClock Profile EMS and in all modes intensity isadjustable by means the CH1 and CH2 keys.

• In Constant Mode there is continuousoutput. Frequency can be adjustedbetween 1 and 80Hz using the ‘FREQ’ key,and intensity can be adjusted using the‘CH1’ and ‘CH2’ keys.

• To automatically switch the unit off after 5to 50 minutes (in 5 minute intervals), orfor the unit to remain on until switchedoff manually (‘C’ setting), press the'TIMER' button. Depending on the unit'sprevious setting you will either see aflashing time to the right of the clock iconat the bottom of the LCD or a flashing 'C'.By means of the 'TIME' key you can selectthe required duration of treatment. If youselect 'C', treatment will continue untilyou turn the unit off manually. To confirmyour selection, press the 'TIMER' buttonagain and the number (or 'C') will stopflashing.

• Please note that it is not possible toadjust the intensity while you are settingthe timer, i.e. while the time (or 'C') isflashing.

• In Cycle Mode, both channels are on andoff in regular cycles.

• Frequency can be adjusted between 1 and80Hz using the ‘FREQ’ key, and intensitycan be adjusted using the ‘CH1’ and ‘CH2’keys.

• The 'TIMER' button and the 'TIME' keyare operated as follows:-

• Press the ‘TIMER’ button and the on timewill be displayed with the number ofseconds flashing. Adjust the on timeusing the ‘TIME’ key.

• Press the ‘TIMER’ button to confirm yourselection and the off time will now bedisplayed, again with the number ofseconds flashing. Adjust the off timeusing the TIME key. Confirm yourselection using the ‘TIMER’ button.

• You can now use the ‘TIME’ key to set thetimer to automatically switch the unit offafter 5 to 40 minutes (in 5 minuteintervals), or to stay on until switched offmanually (‘C’ setting) in exactly the sameway as for the Constant Mode describedon page 10.

• This mode is similar to the Cycle Mode(described on previous page).

• The difference is that in Reciprocal Modethe two channels are switched on and offalternately (i.e. when Channel 1 is on,Channel 2 if off and vice-versa). The TIMER and TIME functions operate inexactly the same way as for the CycleMode.

• The Contraction Mode makes musclesgradually contract and relax.

• To set the length of the contractions pressthe ‘TIMER’ button. The ON time will flash.

• Set the ON time using the ‘TIME’ key andconfirm your selection by pressing the‘TIMER’ button. There is no OFF time inthe contraction mode.

• You can now use the 'TIME' key to set thetimer to turn the unit off automatically, inthe same way as for the Cycle Mode (see page 11).

• This mode is similar to the ContractionMode (page 12). The only difference is thatin Contraction Reciprocal mode the twochannels are on and off alternately (i.e.when Channel 1 is on, Channel 2 if off andvice-versa).

• This mode is also similar to the ContractionMode (page 12). The difference is that in thismode, there is a rest period after eachcontraction.

• To set the length of the contractions pressthe ‘TIMER’ button. The ON time will now beflashing.

• Set the on time using the ‘TIME’ key andconfirm your selection by pressing the‘TIMER’ button.

• The flashing rest time option is now setusing the ‘TIME’ key, and confirmed usingthe ‘TIMER’ button.

• You can now set the timer to switch the unitoff automatically, or set it to ‘C’ so that itremains on until manually switched off asbefore.

• Use this mode to relax muscles. • The frequency can be adjusted using the

‘FREQ’ key. • Both channels are permanently on in this

mode, so there are no ON or OFF times toset.

• The timer can be set to turn the unit offautomatically, or set to remain on untilswitched off manually, as above.

Device Failures

• Please do not attempt to repair damageddevices yourself.

• In case of further enquiries, always statethe model of your device: i.e. ‘ProfileEMS.’

• Body Clock Profile EMS units should berepaired by qualified technical personnel.

• Body Clock Profile EMS units areguaranteed for a period of 5 years againstmanufacturer’s defects excluding(leadwires and electrodes). Note: the guarantee is null and void if anyattempt is made to open the unit byunauthorised personnel.

• In the event of a fault please contact thesupplier (address found on the invoice ordelivery note)

Maintenance and Care

• Change the batteries regularly.• The unit must be switched off when

changing the batteries.• The unit and lead wires may be wiped

clean by using a very slightly dampenedcloth. Mild soap may be used but DONOT apply solvents.

• Never immerse the stimulator in water.

General Precautions

• Do not yank or twist the leadwires. Treatthem gently for long life. They are madefrom fine wire to be flexible andlightweight.

• Do not place your Body Clock Profile EMSclose to any source of excess heat.

• Do not operate your unit in the presenceof flammable gases.

• Do not attempt to open the Body ClockProfile EMS unit.

• Do not use battery or power sourcesother than those specified.

• Do not drop this unit onto a hard surface.

Checking System Performance

• If your unit does not appear to beoperating properly, try changing thebattery. Replacing the battery caneliminate most problems.

• Check that the leadwires are properlyconnected to the unit.

• Check the electrodes are firmly attachedto the leadwire pins.

• Make sure that the leadwires are notdamaged or broken.

• Powered muscle stimulators should notbe used by patients with demand typecardiac pacemakers.

• Powered muscle stimulators should notbe used during pregnancy.

• Powered muscle stimulators should notbe used until 12 weeks after childbirth.

• Do not use this unit while operatingmachinery or while driving.

• Stimulation should not be applied overthe carotid nerves, the neck or mouth,transthoracically or transcerebrally.

• Stimulation should not be applied overswollen, infected or inflamed areas ofskin or over or in proximity to cancerouslesions.

• Caution should be used for patients withsuspected or diagnosed heart problems.

• Caution should be used where there is atendency to haemorrhage following acutetrauma or fracture, following recentsurgical procedures when musclecontraction could disrupt the healingprocess, over the menstruating uterus,over areas of skin which lack normalsensation.

• Some patients may experience mild skinirritation due at the site of the electrodes.This can sometimes be reduced by usingalternative electrodes and/or repositioning them.

• Electrode placement and stimulationsettings should be based on the guidanceof the prescribing practitioner.
