Tips for a Safe and Happy Halloween

Pedestrian Bridge to Get Makeover

Telegraph Road Median Project Complete

Progress is being made on plans to renovate the aging Rosemead Boulevard Pedestrian Bridge. For more than 50 years, the bridge located between Balfour Street and Mines Avenue has provided safe passage for pedestrians wanting to cross this major street. Time has taken its toll, however, and the bridge is in need of structural and aesthetic improvements. Funding for the project is being provided by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Author-ity and the City. TTG Engineers presented a variety of design concepts for the renovated bridge during a community outreach meeting held last month. These concepts will be presented to the City Council for its review later this month. A start date for rehabilitation work has not yet been determined.

For many families, Halloween traditions such as dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating are a must. To ensure Halloween is safe and fun for you and your child, the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station recommends you follow these basic safety tips:

Preparing for Halloween:Ensure costumes and accessories are

flame-resistant. Keep costumes short enough to prevent tripping or entanglement.

Try make-up instead of a mask. Masks can be uncomfortable, and may limit or block vision.

Place reflective tape on costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

Plan and review with your children their trick-or-treating route. A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children.

Reminders for Trick-or-Treaters: Make your trick-or-treat stops only at

familiar homes that have the outside light on.

Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat.

Do not eat your treats until they are thoroughly checked by an adult at home.

ATTENTION TIME WARNER CABLE CUSTOMERSDue to a Time Warner Cable Digital upgrade, Time Warner Customers who do not have a digital set-top cable box and receive Time Warner service straight through their televisions will no longer be able to view the City’s PEG Channel on Channel 3. Beginning on or after Tuesday, October 8, CTV3 will be moved to channel 15.235 available on Digital ready televisions. If you have a television that does not receive Digital channels, you may request a Digital Adapter from Time Warner Cable.

For more information, call 1.855.286.1736.

After seven months of construction, the Telegraph Road Landscape Median Project is finished. Approximately $1 million worth of improvements are in place along Telegraph between Rosemead Boulevard and Passons Boulevard, including new raised medians with special lighting and drought-toler-ant landscaping that doesn’t restrict the view of drivers. A number of new trees were also planted along the parkway. This major rehabilitation project was a joint effort between the City of Pico Rivera and the City of Downey with funding provided by the federal government and L.A. County Proposition C sales tax revenue.

Other improvements include: Rehabilitated surfacing in the Telegraph/Rosemead intersection; New asphalt/rubber pavement between Rosemead and Passons Boulevards, which helps reduce

traffic noise;Reconstructed curbs and gutters, sidewalks and driveway approaches;New and reconstructed curb ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and;Upgraded traffic signals.

Improvements to the intersection of Rosemead/Lakewood Boulevard and Telegraph Road are set to begin later this year.

Costumes - Don’t throw them away; save them for another use, donate them or reuse certain pieces for everyday occasions (headbands, belts, socks, etc.)

Decorations - Be crafty! Make your own and remember to save them for next year. For electrical decorations, remember to save energy by unplugging them during the day.

Pumpkins - Don’t discard your Jack-o-Lantern in the trash. If possible, compost it!
