On April Fool’s Day 2016, Profile will be twenty years old. When we

created the company in 1996 to publish lively, stimulating non-fiction,

we were determined that every book we published would matter.

Twenty years later, I know we are holding true to that principle.

In those twenty years eBooks have arrived. Amazon, Google,

smartphones and electric cars too. House prices have become clinically

insane but book prices have hardly moved at all and remain extraordinary

good value. In this catalogue, for less than the price of a craft beer, you

can travel into space with Jim Al-Khalili, discover a new emotion with

Tiffany Watt Smith or hop aboard for Simon Bradley’s epic history of

Britain’s railways. And for less than a bottle of good wine you can read

new works by Alan Bennett, Ian Stewart or Susan Hill or discover a new

favourite. All will last much longer and give more pleasure. And all

of them will be much better for your brain than Twitter, Facebook or

Instagram – also all new.

Sadly many bookshops, libraries and some publishers have disappeared

in twenty years and in the UK the future of public libraries has never

looked bleaker. At the same time the world’s population has grown

by another billion people, so let’s hope most of them will grow up to

be readers. Through all these changes the demand for reading quality

non-fiction – and the occasional jeu d’esprit – remains as strong as

ever – perhaps even stronger in beautiful print format. And we are as

committed as ever to our authors, our readers and our independence.

This is exactly the sort of list of great books we have always dreamed

of publishing. There is something here for (almost) everyone and I

commend this list to you wholeheartedly.

Happy reading.

Keeping On Keeping OnClassic Bennett – a new volume of diaries and more

Alan Bennett’s third collection of prose Keeping On Keeping On follows in the footsteps of the phenomenally successful Writing Home and Untold Stories. This latest collection contains Bennett’s peerless diaries 2005 to 2015, a provocative sermon on private education given before the University at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, and ‘Baffled at a Bookcase’, a passionate defence of the public library. It also includes Denmark Hill, a darkly comic radio play set in suburban south London, as well as Bennett’s reflections on a quarter of a century’s collaboration with Nicholas Hytner. This is an engaging, humane, sharp, funny and unforgettable record of life according to the inimitable Alan Bennett.

Alan Bennett has been one of our leading dramatists since the success of Beyond the Fringe in the 1960s. His television series Talking Heads has become a modern-day classic, as have many of his works for the stage. The History Boys won numerous awards and was one of the National Theatre’s most successful productions ever. His collection of prose Writing Home was a number one bestseller. Untold Stories won the PEN/Ackerley Prize for autobiography, 2006. Recent works of fiction include The Uncommon Reader and Smut: Two Unseemly Stories.

Shrinking VioletsA Field Guide to Shyness

Don’t be shy: pick up this fascinating cultural history

Our success as a species is built on sociability, so shyness should be an anomaly. But we all know what it’s like to cringe in embarrassment, stand tongue-tied or blush with humiliation. In Shrinking Violets, Joe Moran explores the hidden world of shyness, from timidity in lemon sharks to the role of texting in Finnish love affairs. As he seeks answers to the questions that shyness poses – Why are we shy? Can we overcome it? Does it define us? – he uncovers the fascinating stories of the men and women who were ‘of the violet persuasion’, from Charles Darwin to Agatha Christie, Tove Jansson to Nick Drake. In their heart-breaking and inspiring stories, and through the myriad ways scientists and thinkers have tried to explain and cure shyness, Moran finds a hopeful conclusion: to be shy is a different way of seeing the world that can be enriching and inspiring.

Joe Moran is Professor of English and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University. He is the author of Queuing for Beginners, On Roads (shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize) and Armchair Nation.

AliensScience from the Other Side

It’s the biggest question we’ve ever faced, one that has fascinated generations of humans: do aliens exist? If they did, what would they look like? How would they think? And, what would it mean for us if we found them?

Here, Professor Jim Al-Khalili blasts off in search of answers. Featuring twenty pieces by top scientists and experts in the field, Aliens covers every aspect of the subject, from alien consciousness to the neuroscience behind alien abductions. And along the way it’ll cover science fiction, the probability of finding extra-terrestrial life and whether recently-discovered exoplanets might support life.

Engaging, authoritative and filled with scientific insights fresh from the far edges of the galaxy, Aliens is the perfect book for anyone who has ever looked up into the starry sky and wondered: are we alone?

Contributors include: Martin Rees, Ian Stewart, Adam Rutherford, Nick Lane and Monica Grady.

HinterlandA wry and revealing memoir from the author of A View from the Foothills

All serious politicians are supposed to possess a hinterland, but not all do. Chris Mullin was one who did. By the time he entered parliament he had reported from the wars in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and tracked down the survivors of the CIA operation in Tibet. He was the author of three novels, including the classic A Very British Coup. His successful campaign to free the innocent people convicted of the Birmingham bombings was described as ‘one of the greatest feats ever achieved by an investigative reporter’. Elected to parliament, aged 39, he quickly established himself as a fearless inquisitor before going on to become a minister in three departments. His three volumes of diaries have been widely acclaimed as the best account of the Blair years. He left parliament in 2010 (‘better to go while people are still asking why rather than when’). These are his memoirs.

Chris Mullin was Labour MP for Sunderland South from 1987 until 2010. He is the author of three volumes of diaries, The View from the Foothills, A Walk-On Part and Decline and Fall, and the bestselling novel A Very British Coup which was turned into an award-winning television series.

‘We are stardust,’ sang Joni Mitchell. It’s a cliché, but clichés are often true. Earlier, Sir Arthur Eddington had said the same in the New York Times Magazine: ‘We are bits of stellar matter that got cold by accident, bits of a star gone wrong.’ Try setting that to music.

Calculating the CosmosHow Mathematics Unveils the Universe

One of the world’s most prominent mathematicians explores the universe’s origins and future

Ian Stewart’s up-to-the-minute guide to the cosmos moves from the earth and the planets to the galaxy and the universe. He describes how galaxies, stars and planets form, why stars implode, how everything began and how it’s going to end. He considers parallel universes, fine-tuning of the cosmos, whether life on earth will be snuffed out by a comet and what extra-terrestrial life may be like. He provides crystal clear accounts of gravity, spacetime, relativity and quantum theory, and how they relate to each other.

Mathematics has been the driving force in astronomy and cosmology since the ancient Egyptians. Professor Stewart shows how Kepler’s work on the planets led to Newton’s law of gravity, which in turn inspired Einstein’s theories of relativity. He examines current challenges to Big Bang Theory and how the next scientific revolution may once again transform understanding of the universe and our place within it.

Ian Stewart is Professor Emeritus at The University of Warwick. His many books include Seventeen Equations that Changed the World, and The Great Mathematical Problems. His awards include the Royal Society’s Faraday Medal, the IMA Gold Medal, the Zeeman Medal and the Lewis Thomas Prize.

The Art of RivalryFour Friendships, Betrayals and Breakthroughs in Modern Art

How love and betrayal shaped eight famous artists

This is a story about rivalry among artists. Not the kind of rivalry that grows out of dislike, but which emerges from admiration, friendship, love. This rivalry existed between Degas and Manet, Picasso and Matisse, Pollock and de Kooning, and Freud and Bacon.

These are some of the most famous, creative relationships in the history of art, driving each to creativity and inspiration – and despair, jealousy and betrayal. Matisse’s success threatened Picasso so much that his friends would throw darts at a portrait of his rival’s beloved daughter Marguerite. And Willem de Kooning’s twisted friendship with Jackson Pollock didn’t stop him taking up with his friend’s lover barely a year after Pollock’s fatal car crash.

In The Art of Rivalry, Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Sebastian Smee explores how, as both artists struggled, they each played vital roles in the other’s breakthroughs – ultimately determining the course of modern art.

Sebastian Smee is arts critic for the Boston Globe, and has written for the Telegraph, Guardian, Times and Financial Times. He is the author of Lucian Freud and Side by Side: Picasso v Matisse. He won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism for his ‘vivid and exuberant writing about art’.

Comparing NotesHow we make sense of music

We’re all instinctively musical. Why? Adam Ockelford has the answer

A tap of the foot, a rush of emotion, the urge to dance: without instruction or training we all respond intuitively to music. Comparing Notes explains why we are all musical, how music makes sense and why abstract patterns of sound have come to play such a central role in our lives.

Adam Ockelford has developed a new musical theory based on three decades of innovative work with blind autistic children, he answers questions that have intrigued people since the ancient Greeks: how does music convey emotion? Why do people respond differently to the same piece? Will we ever run out of tunes? Here, he explores how music can serve non-musical ends and why music, religion and politics are so entangled, from the rules of hymn music to the impact of Communism on composition.

Comparing Notes is essential reading for anyone who’s ever loved a song, sonata or guitar solo and wondered why.

Adam Ockelford is Professor of Music at Roehampton University and received his PhD from Goldsmith’s College. He is Secretary of the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE). Ockelford’s TED Talk with Derek Paravicini has been viewed over a million times. He is a composer and pianist.

ScornThe Wittiest and the Wickedest Insult and Invective in History

‘Authors are easy to get on with - if you’re fond of children.’ Michael Joseph, publisher ‘May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits’ Arab curse

There’s no pleasure like a perfectly-turned put-down (when it’s directed at somebody else, of course) but Matthew Parris’s Scorn is sharply different from the standard collections. So here is a selection of the funniest, sharpest, rudest and most devastating insults in history, from ancient Roman graffiti to the battlefields of Twitter. Drawing on bile from such masters as Dorothy Parker, Elizabeth I, Boris Johnson, Groucho Marx, Princess Anne, Winston Churchill, Mae West and Alastair Campbell – which form an exchange between voices down the ages – Scorn shows that abuse can be an art form, and this collection includes extended literary invective as well as short verbal shin-kicks.

Encompassing literature, art, politics, showbiz, marriage, gender, nationality and religion, Matthew Parris’s sublime and much-loved collection is the perfect companion for the festive season, whether you’re searching for the perfect elegant riposte, the rudest polite letter ever written, or a brutal verbal sledgehammer.

Matthew Parris worked for the Foreign Office before serving as an MP. He now writes as a columnist for The Times and the Spectator, and in 2011 won the Best Columnist award at the British Press Awards. His books include his autobiography Chance Witness and The Spanish Ambassador’s Suitcase.

Boots on the GroundBritain and her Army since 1945

Boots on the Ground follows the British Army through seventy years of Britain’s shifting security and defence policies. From the decolonisation of India to the Iraq invasions, the book tracks Britain’s transformation from a leading nation with two million troops in 1945 to fewer than 82,000 troops in 2015. Despite this apparent de-escalation, at no point since World War Two has Britain not had ‘boots on the ground’ – and this situation is unlikely to change.

Sir Richard Dannatt brings forty years of military service to telling the story of how the British Army has shaped, and been shaped by, events from the Cold War to the Good Friday Agreement. Whether examing the fallout of empire in the insurgencies of Kenya and Indonesia, the politically fraught battle for the Falklands, the long-standing conflict in Northern Ireland or Britain’s relationship with NATO and experience of fighting with America, Dannatt honours the courage and complexity of a key British institution.

General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL served in the army from 1971–2009, during which time he led troops in Ireland and Kosovo and held the positions of Commander-in-Chief, Land Command and Chief of the General Staff. He is now Constable of the Tower of London, where he lives.

How the Zebra Got its StripesDarwinian Just So Stories

Animal mysteries explained in the light of evolution by one of France’s brightest young scientist

Why do giraffes have such long necks? Why are zebras striped? And why does the female hyena’s clitoris exactly resemble and almost function like the male’s penis?

Deploying the latest scientific research and his own extensive observations, Léo Grasset answers these questions and many more in a book of post-Darwinian Just So Stories. Complex natural phenomena are explained simply and comically as Grasset turns evolutionary biology to burning animal questions, from why elephants prefer dictators and buffaloes democracies, to whether the lion is really king.

The author’s exploration of two million years of human evolution shows how it not only informs our current habits and behaviour, but reveals that we are hybrids of several different species.

Prepare by turns to be fascinated, shocked and delighted as well as advised – by the end, you will know to never hug the beautiful honey badger and what explains its psychotic nastiness.

Léo Grasset is the French punk scientist par excellence, founder of ‘Dirty Biology’ and author of the blog ‘Dans les testicules de Darwin’ devoted to biology, testosterone and rock ’n’ roll. He is also one of France’s leading up-and-coming evolutionary biologists.

The French RevolutionFrom Enlightenment to Tyranny

The story of how the French Revolution descended into Terror

The fall of the Bastille, on 14 July, 1789, has become the symbol of the French Revolution. But this violent and random act was unrepresentative of the early revolution, which was taking place ten miles west of Paris, in Versailles. There, the nobles, clergy and commoners of France had just declared themselves a republic, toppling a rotten system of aristocratic privilege and altering the course of history forever.

In a clear, dispassionate and fast-moving narrative, Ian Davidson shows how and why the Revolutionaries, in just five years, spiralled from the best of the Enlightenment to tyranny and the Terror. The book reminds us how the revolution was both an inspiration of the finest principles of a new democracy, and an awful warning of what can happen when idealism goes wrong.

Ian Davidson studied English and Classics at Cambridge University, before being awarded the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship at Harvard and later becoming Visiting Fellow at Johns Hopkins University. He also worked for the Financial Times for many years. He is author of Voltaire in Exile and Voltaire: A Life.

The Glass WallSuccess strategies for women at work

Bold, practical strategies that will shatter the glass wall in the workplace and boost any woman’s career

Never mind the glass ceiling. In today’s workplace there’s a glass wall. Men and women can see each other clearly through the divide but they don’t speak the same language or have the same expectations. And as a result, women’s careers are suffering.

With more women than ever at work but still too few in the boardroom, this book gives women the tools they need to address the assumptions and miscommunication holding them back. Real concerted success for women comes from having a range of tactics that you can use to take control of any situation.

Drawing on Unerman and Jacob’s own experiences as well as over a hundred interviews, The Glass Wall provides clear, smart and easy-to-apply strategies for success. These are the skills that both women and men, managers and managed need to know, to help break down that wall and create better workplaces for all.

Triumphs and DisastersFifty years at Christie’s and beyond

Join the auctioneer extraordinaire on his adventures in the world of art sales

Lord Hindlip presided over London’s auction house Christie’s during a time of great excitement in the art world. The 1960s, 70s and early 80s saw the denuding of country houses and ransacking of attics across the country – yielding genuine treasures and fakes (both cunning and clumsy) in equal measure.

Both memoir and art book, Adventures in Art recounts Lord Hindlip’s career through the major works of art that have passed through his hands over the last fifty years. His story charts such extraordinary highs as the sale of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers for a then world-record sum, as well as the often hilarious lows, including a wild goose chase across the badlands of rural America which led him to a gun-toting recluse and a cherished pile of tat masquerading as Old Master paintings.

This lavishly produced book is illustrated with photographs of all the works of art that came to define Lord Hindlip’s tenure as chairman of Christie’s.

Lord Hindlip (Charles Allsopp) was educated at Eton and served in the Coldstream Guards from 1959 until 1962, when he joined the art auction house Christie’s. He was General Manager of Christie’s New York, then successively director, deputy chairman and chairman of Christie, Manson & Woods in London.

IDEAS IN PROFILE

C AT H E R I N E B E L S E Y

CriticismFrom IDEAS IN PROFILE: a snappy, serious introduction to criticism

At the heart of criticism lies one question: What do you think? Among the most fundamental of human intellectual activities, criticism offers a starting point for many of our journeys towards understanding.

Focusing particularly on stories, plays and poems, Criticism traces the central concepts and controversies in criticism, from Plato to Derrida, and from Romanticism to the death of the author. In the process, it reflects on criticism itself, the possibilities and options that confront casual readers, as well as reviewers, members of reading groups, students and teachers of English.

How far do we make conscious choices about how and what we read (or view)? What do we conventionally look for in fiction? And what might we look for if we went beyond the conventional?

Imperial TriumphThe Roman World from Hadrian to the Heirs of Constantine, AD 138-363

Two hundred years of action-packed politics and power

Imperial Triumph presents the 225–year history of Rome at the height of its imperial range and power, from the reign of Hadrian to the death of Julian the Apostate. Michael Kulikowski presents an intimate account of the twists and often deadly turns of Roman imperial politics in which a succession of emperors could sometimes rise and fall with bewildering rapidity. He shows how, despite volatility at the top, the Romans were able to see off successive attacks by Parthians, Germans, Persians and Goths. He explains how and why Roman imperial institutions were remade under Constantine and his son Constantius II when the empire was effectively split between Rome and Constantinople.

In a beautifully paced and structured narrative, Michael Kulikowski examines the fundamental political and cultural questions posed by the Roman empire and its history. The Constantinian empire, he argues, represents the pivot on which the empire’s fortunes turned.

Michael Kulikowski is Professor of History and Classics at Penn State University. His books include Rome’s Gothic Wars. His research and writing ranges widely across ancient and early medieval history. He is a regular contributor to the London Review of Books. Tr

The Long and the Short of ItA guide to finance and investment for normally intelligent people who aren’t in the industry

A clear and practical investment guide by a leading economist

This book provides a guide to the complexities of modern finance. It describes the basics of investment and the sophisticated innovations of the modern financial system. It explains how to put your finances in the only hands you can confidently trust – your own.

Readers will learn everything they need to be their own investment manager. They will recognise their investment options, the institutions that try to sell them, and how to distinguish between fact and fiction in what companies say. They will discover the principles of sound investment and the research that supports these principles. Crucially, they will learn a practical investment strategy and how to implement it.

Leading economist and hugely successful investor John Kay uses his academic credentials and practical experience to lay out the key principles of investment. This is the only book about finance and investment anyone needs, and the one book they must have.

‘Both a first-class economist and an excellent writer’, Financial Times John Kay is a visiting professor at the LSE, a Fellow of St John’s, Oxford and director of several public companies. He is the author of many books including Obliquity and Other People’s Money, both published by Profile.

Ego is the EnemyThe Fight to Master Our Greatest Opponent

A powerful meditation on the nature and dangers of ego

The new book from Ryan Holiday uses practical and inspiring philosophy to explore the powerful and timeless concept of ego. Holiday argues that ego can be our biggest enemy – at all stages of our careers and our lives. It is only by identifying and acknowledging our ego, speaking to its desires and systematically disarming it that we can create our best work.

As with The Obstacle is the Way, the book is organised into bite-sized observations featuring characters and narratives to illustrate themes and life lessons designed to resonate, uplift and inspire.

Ego is the Enemy is an inspiring and timely reminder that humility and confidence are still our greatest friends when confronting the challenges of a culture which tends to fan the flames of ego and encourage the cult of personality at all costs.
