PREFACE
The Centre for Differently Abled Persons (CDAP) of the Bharathidasan
University, since its inception in 2011, has been continuously serving the
differently abled students and the community through its comprehensive
activities.
The major activities of the centre are: conduct of customized academic
courses; production of adapted resource materials; training and sensitization
of teachers in Inclusive Pedagogy; ICT enabled Assistive Technology
Instruction; Vocational Rehabilitation; Skill Based Training and Placement;
Braille, sign language training; Guidance and Counselling for students with
special needs and their parents. These disability-specific training and
assistance educates and empowers the differently Abled students to become
self-reliant and productive human resource.
The Center's learning hub with its specialized software and digitized
equipment enable students with any type of disability to access educational
realm as their peers. The Digital Library of the Center addresses the need for
differently abled researchers of Bharathidasan University and other
universities to access print and digital reference materials. Research on the
domain of disability is carried out to cater to the unique needs of this special
group.
The Unique feature of this centre is that it accommodates the
educational and vocational needs of all students with disabilities including
Persons with Vision Impairment, Low Vision, Hearing and Speech
Impairment, Learning Disability, Intellectual Disability, Cerebral Palsy,
Autism and Multiple Disabilities.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE
To provide an academically ambient environment and disability-
specific customized programmes for the differently abled students to
blossom into valuable Human assets.
To undertake research in areas related to disability studies with Multi-
disciplinary perspectives.
To produce and disseminate resource materials, training manuals and
awareness brochure in adapted formats of Braille, Large print, tactile
and Audio-Video forms.
To collaborate with organizations and professionals for providing
rehabilitation and extension services
To create a platform for the differently abled students to exhibit their
potentials.
MISSION
To foster self-development and self-reliance of differently abled
students by imparting education, ICT based training and employability
skill.
To augment the life of differently abled students by assisting them to
identify and enrich their potentials and goals.
VISION
To create an accessible, equitable and sustainable opportunity for
differently abled students through inclusive educational practices.
To provide full participation, total access, economic and social
integration of differently abled students in the mainstream
environment.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
A. Ph. D IN EDUCATION
Objectives:
On completion of the programme, the students will be able to:

technologies for addressing the challenges.

Eligibility
This programme is specifically for students who have completed their
post graduate degree in education with more than 55% marks.

B. BACHELOR OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS (for Students with
Speech and Hearing Impairment)
The objectives of programme are:

Eligibility
This course is specifically for Persons with Hearing and Speech
Impairment. The candidates shall be required to have passed (10 + 2
pattern) Higher Secondary Examination (Academic/Vocational) conducted by
the Government of Tamil Nadu or an equivalent examination of any other
statutory Board. (Disability certificate is mandatory)
Duration of the Course
The course shall be of three years duration spread over six semesters.
C. POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INCLUSIVE TRAINING AND
DEVELOPMENT
Objectives
At the end of the program, the students will be able to:
Facilitate inclusive practice for assessing training needs
Design and implement inclusive training programs
Conduct training programs inclusively
Apply Human Resource Training and Implementation strategies
Promote Entrepreneurship Education
Expand Human Resource Planning in inclusive context
Communicate effectively
Perform statistics and research on inclusive human resource
development
Eligibility
A candidate who has passed any degree of Bharathidasan University or
any other University accepted by the Syndicate of Bharathidasan
University.

The Programme is for a period of one year: Semester pattern.
D. POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN COUNSELLING FOR PERSONS WITH
SPECIAL NEEDS
Objectives:
To equip the students with strategies to overcome constraints in
raising their special child
To make them access information & services that are related to
development of children with disabilities
To explicit the general and specific information about disabilities and
their preventive and curative measures
To initiate them to be part of relevant forums, committees,
associations and clubs that deals with the rights, rehabilitation and
welfare of Differently abled persons.
To gain confidence and knowledge to work with professionals and
officials in the mainstreaming process
Eligibility:
A candidate who has passed any degree of Bharathidasan University or
any other University accepted by the Syndicate of Bharathidasan
University.
Duration of the Programme
The Programme is for a period of one year.
E. DIPLOMA IN BASICS OF ADAPTED YOGA
Objectives:
Understand the fundamental principles of yogic practices
Practice modified approaches in performing the asana, Pranayama,
Mudras, Yoga Nitra, mantra, and meditation
Acquire the knowledge of the advantages of practicing yoga for
physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing.
Enable them to practice different asana and meditations with
adaption’s as per individual needs
Equip themselves to do independently learnt yogic techniques
Eligibility
Students with Mental Retardation, Autism, Learning Disability, and
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder of age 14 and above (Chronological)
are eligible for the course.
Duration:

F. DIPLOMA IN VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND MANAGEMENT (for
students with Mental Retardation)
Objectives:
To assist the students in developing their work skills by means of
formal and Non-Formal training methods.
To develop well-designed individualized transition plan for vocational
skill trade training and Management.
To create awareness on rehabilitation aids to enhance their work
capacities.
To provide training to foster work place etiquette and sociability skills.
To understand the basic science behind sex education
To foster self-advocacy in time of need
Eligibility
Students with disabilities of age 16 and above (Chronological) with a
pass/fail in class 8 conducted by Government of Tamilnadu or any approved
Statutory Board are eligible for enrolling in the course.
Duration:
The duration of the course will be two years with 4 semesters
G.DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER FUNDAMENTAL AND OFFICE AUTOMATION
(Students with MR and LD)
Objectives
To make them understand the principles of software and hardware
operations
To train and educate the mechanical part of computers ( electrical &
electronic operations)
To educate MS-office system, internet operations, online, offline
working areas
To train them to work on the comment based activities in MS-office
system
To make the participants to understand various services based on
online and offline surfaces
Eligibility

Students with Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disabilities with a
pass/fail in class 8 conducted by Government of Tamilnadu or any approved
statutory Board are eligible for the course.
DURATION
The duration of the course will be Two Years
H.DIPLOMA IN SPECIAL SCHOOL MANAGEMENT
Objectives:
1. To equip the students with strategies to overcome constraints in

Parent /Caretakers of Children with MR, LD & Autism who have passed
SSLC or equivalent in any stream are eligible for the course.
I. DIPLOMA IN SPECIAL SCHOOL MANAGEMENT
Objective:
1. To inculcate knowledge of initiations at various stages for educating
children with special needs
2. To inculcate knowledge of basic norms, procedures and systems to
start a special school.
3. To make the participants to gain managerial skills to deliver quality
work.
4. To help the participants to understand the basic best practices of
remedial education systems and therapeutic mobility rehabilitation
techniques
5. To understand the best practices of books of account, records, &
files maintenances.
6. To get information & services available for children with special
needs

7. To equip their knowledge with reference to Disability &
Rehabilitation services of Central & State Governments.
Duration:
The duration of the course will be one year
Eligibility
Students who have passed HSC or equivalent with 50% of marks in
any stream and parents/caretakers or teachers of children with special needs
are eligible for the course.
J. CERTIFCATE COURSE IN BASIC COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
Objectives:
To develop an awareness of how computers work and how they are
used in the home, school, workplace and community;
To provide live demonstrations and let the students use computer on
a daily basis
To equip the students to operate computers on their own without
other’s support.
To enable the students to acquire skills in using computers to
accomplish simple tasks.
Duration:
The duration of the course will be one year.
Eligibility
Children with Mental Retardation, Autism, Learning Disability and
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder of age 15 and above (Chronological
age) are eligible for admission in the course.
K. CERTIFICATE COURSE IN OFFICE AUTOMATION AND ASSISTIVE
TECHNOLOGY
Objectives:
To enable the students to:
• Recognize the importance and use of computer in education and
career
• Acquire knowledge of assistive technology software that enable
visually challenged to work on Computers and Applications
• Possess adequate computing skills, self-confidence for higher
education in Information Technology, Professional qualification to
secure employment opportunities
ELIGIBILITY:
This course is specifically for Persons with Vision Impairment and
Learning Disability. The candidates shall be required to have passed in 8th

Std Examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an
equivalent examination of any other statutory Board.(Disability Certificate is
mandatory)
DURATION:
The duration of the course will be Six months and a bridge course for
one month.

Awareness program on “Eye Care and Eye Donation”- 2013
The program in
collaboration with
Joseph Eye Hospital
sensitized 1400
college students on
the themes of eye
care and eye
donation. A Brochure on eye care was
released followed by a signature campaign in which more than 1800
persons signed in favour of eye donation. Human chain headed by
Dr.Rajeswari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Doctors, Dr.S.Subbiah,
Alagappa University, Academicians, students, NSS volunteers and police
officials formed the human chain with pluck cards in their hands.
Awareness on “Breaking the Barriers of
Inclusion” and Rally on “International Day for
Persons with Disabilities” -2013.
The rally was flagged
off by the District
Court Judge and
legal cell and it extended from District court
to Bishop Heber college. Students with
Disabilities, NSS, NCC, Red Cross and Scouts, Advocates and Public joined
the rally. The workshop with legal and disability advocacy members
sensitized the students and public. Barriers that serve as barriers for
creating an Inclusive Society and the ways and means to break these
barriers.

Education” 2014
For sensitizing the college teachers on
handling

disabilities in

classrooms,
a two day
workshop was conducted in which the
teachers were sensitized on basic
inclusive Pedagogy.

rehabilitation 2014

training
program
sensitize

students
and
teachers from various colleges on
the need and significance of
community based rehabilitation.
Strategies and techniques of
rehabilitation were taught to the

interpretation. They were given
exposure on various equipment and

camp in
coloration
with Joseph
Eye hospital

conducted in which more than 300
faculties and students and 60

diagnosed with defect were
advised for further medical

Economic
independence
is the
greatest tool
of
independence
for the
differently abled. To empower the
specially abled with skills of their
interest and capability, the training
centre was launched. It comprises of
ICT enabled tailoring unit, plastic
reuse unit, screen printing and
computer training centre.

vote as a statutory right” 2017

lecture
served
as a
catalys

sensiti
zed the students from various
colleges to exercise the right to
vote. Legal Professionals gave
insights of how exercise of this
Right can change the whole
scenario.
Exhibition on Scientific innovations for Differently abled and Human
Chain 2017
The four-fold program comprised of an exhibition on the technologies and
software for the specially abled. The exhibition was inaugurated by
Mr.Mayilvaganan, Deputy Commissioner of Police. The exhibition was
witnessed by students, academicians and public, which was followed by
interaction with differently abled students. A Human chain was organized in
which a large group of students and public joined the human and they also
raised their support for building an inclusive society. Mr.Mayilvaganan,
Deputy Commissioner of Police flagged of the human chain.
The Signature campaign emphasizing `we support inclusion’ was signed by
Police officials, legal personnel’s, academicians and students. The human
chain was followed by a workshop in which experts gave insights about the
