Proficiency Level #5 Playing Test
Trumpet General Information: When you have practiced the following exercises enough to
want to try to pass them, make arrangements to have your teacher hear them.
Part 1 Scales: Play the C, F, B‐flat, E‐flat, and A‐flat CONCERT major scales up and
down from memory in 16th notes. The chromatic should be played from memory from A3 to A5 in 16th notes. Be consistent with your articulation.
Part 2 Long Tones: Be able to play any of the above chromatic notes for at least 10
seconds. You should begin each note pianissimo crescendo to fortissimo (reaching that point between the fifth and sixth seconds), then diminishing back down to pianissimo. There should be no wavering of pitch or major changes in tone quality during the crescendo – diminuendo.
Part 3: Be able to play each note of the E‐flat CONCERT scale using the tonguing
pattern indicated below for every note of the scale (same as level four, but faster). The speed of this exercise must be at least ♩=132
Part 4: Be able to play the attached exercises and etude on the following page
perfectly at the tempo indicated for each.
