INNOVATIONSINLEARNING,TEACHING&ASSESSMENTThefollowinglistcontainssomeofmyforemostinnovationsinlegaleducationalpractice,allofwhichhavehadandarehavinginternationalimpact.

Developmentofacollaborative,flexible,problem-based,virtualteaching&learningenvironmentforcross-disciplinaryprofessionaleducation.Theenvironmentinvolvedthecreationofafictionaltownontheweb,andinteractiveelementswithinit,includingvirtuallawfirmwebsites,andweb-basedcommunications.Thisisaworld-first:nooneelseteachesorassesseslawusingthismethodorthissimulationenvironment.Technicalelementsincludedwebsites,professionallearningenvironment,collaborativelearningtoolsandmuchelse,andwasintegratedacrosstheentireprofessionallegalprogrammeintheGGSL,alongsidemoreconventionalformsofteaching,learning&assessment.Theenvironmenthasattractedmuchattentionfromjurisdictionsworld-wideincludingHongKong,Japan,Taiwan,Canada,Australia,USA,theNetherlandsandIreland.Itincludedcollaborativeproject-workinPersonalInjurytransactions,Conveyancing,PrivateClientwork,CivilCourt,andPracticeManagement.Ithasalsoentailedthedevelopmentofabodyoflegaleducationaltheory,basedaroundconceptsoftransactionallearning,thatisuniqueinthelegaleducationalliterature,andwhichisalreadyinfluencingthedirectionoffuturee-learningandcurriculumdesigninlaw.Ihavedevelopedthisinnumerousarticles&bookchapters,abook-lengthstudyoflegaleducationandeditedcollections(seebelow).ThistransactionallearningenvironmenthasbeenfurtherdevelopedwithintheSimulatedProfessionalLearningEnvironmentproject(SIMPLE).SIMPLEwasaJISCprojectintheLargeScale

ImplementationofInnovativeTechnologiesstream,withintheInnovativeE-Learningtheme(2006-8).Thishighlysuccessfultwo-yearprojectcreatedopen-sourcesoftwaretoolsforprofessionalsimulations,andevaluateitsuseinsixlawschools(Glamorgan,Stirling,WestofEngland,GGSL,UWE&Warwick)aswellasthreeotherprofessionalschoolsinStrathclydeUniversity–Architecture,SocialWorkandManagementScience.OurprojectpartnerwasUKCLE(www.ukcle.ac.uk).Fundingtotalled£204,500fromJISC,UKCLEandBILETA.SIMPLEwontwoawards–theprizeforInnovationatthe2009JISCE-AssessmentCompetition,andin2010theLeadershipAwardforBestSimulationToolkitattheGlobalLearningConsortium’sLearningImpactAwardsceremonyinBarcelona.TheSIMPLEprojectwasaninternationalcommunityofpracticebasedathttp://simplecommunity.org.WeobtainedfundingfromtheCentreforComputer-AssistedLearning&Instruction(CALI)intheUSA,institutionsintheUK($40,000),andhaveworkedwiththeAustralianNationalUniversityLegalWorkshopandothers.WealsoliaisedcloselywithoursistersimulationprojectintheNetherlands,Sieberdam(whichwasinspiredbythedevelopmentofArdcalloch,followingatwo-dayseminarheldinAmsterdamin2002),andenabledthemtoachievesubstantialfundingfromtheDutchgovernmentforfurtherdevelopmentoftheirowntransactionalenvironment.Asaresultofoureffortsoverjointfunding,weearnedthesumof€50,000forourownproject.Ithasseededother,similarinnovations,egtheVirtualOfficeSpace(VOS)environmentcurrentlyinuseatANU.CurrentlyaresearchclusterinthePEARLcentreatANU.

MultimediaResourcesforProfessionalLegalEducationIwaseditorofanannually-updatedcollectionofmultimediaresourcesinGGSL.Thesewereusedtodevelopstudents’professionallegalskillsontheDiploma.Thecollectionwasoneofthemostsuccessfule-learninginitiativesintheUK.Atafractionofthecostofsimilarventuresinotherinstitutions,wecreatedabodyofmultimediaunitsthatwashighlyeffectiveinskills-basedlearning,andwhichwasflexibleenoughtobeusedthroughouttheDiplomaandbeyond.Otherinstitutionsaskedustoprovidethemwithsimilarresources,andweformedsuccessfulprojectswiththem,egOxfordInstituteofLegalPractice(nowembeddedinOxfordBrookesUniversity).

Video/podcastlecturesIwasresponsiblefortheongoingdesignofinteractivevideo/podcastlearningenvironmentsthatwasusedwithintheprofessionalpracticecoursesandintheLawSchoolatStrathclyde.Theseincludedtheembeddingofe-lectureswithotherelectronicandpaper-basedresources.Ourworktransformedtheshapeoflarge-groupteachingontheDiploma,anddidsoforothercoursesintheLawSchoolatundergraduatelevel.ThesuccessoftheresourcesattractedoneoftheleadingprovidersoftheLegalPracticeCourseinEngland,theCollegeofLaw,toformathree-yearjoint-venture&consultancyagreementwithustoproducesimilarresourcesfortheirLPCinthefirstinstance,withtheresourcesbrandedas‘i-tutorials’.Thisinitiativesignificantlyimpacteduponteaching,learningandfinancesattheCollege:therearenowfewlarge-grouplecturesontheCollegeLPC;whilerecentresearchhasprovedthatstudentsandlawfirmsareconvincedthati-tutorialscontributetoflexibleandeffectivelearningmethods.Ihavefurtherdevelopedthesedesignswithotherlawschoolsinternationally,egNorthumbriaUniversityLawSchool,OsgoodeLawSchool’sprofessionalcentre,OsgoodeProfessionalDevelopment(OPD),andANUCollegeofLawJDOprogramme(seebelow).
5. StandardizedClient(SC)InitiativeFromthebodyofresearchliteratureandpracticeinmedicaleducationwedevelopedaworld-firstinitiativeintheuseofSCswithinprofessionallegaleducation.Thismulti-disciplinaryinternationaleducationalproject,begunin2004,involvedtheClinicalSkillsUnitofDundeeMedicalSchool,

GeorgiaStateUniversity,CollegeofLawandtheUKCentreforLegalEducation.Weattractedover£25,000ingrants.SCswereusednotjusttodelivertrainingbutalsotoassessstudents’professionalskillsandattributesininterviewing.TodateSCshavebeentrainedinStrathclydeLawSchool,NorthumbriaLawSchool,UniversityofNewHampshireLawSchool,AustralianNationalUniversityCollegeofLaw,theLawSocietyofIreland,LetterkennyLawSchoolDonegal,KwanseiGakuinUniversityLawSchool,Osaka,Japan,HongKongUniversityFacultyofLaw,ChineseUniversityofHongKongLawSchool,NottinghamLawSchool,SRA(SolicitorsRegulationAuthority).Aninternationalprojectonthemethodhasbeenstarted-CurrentlyaresearchclusterinthePEARLcentreatANU,andwillbedevelopedfurtheratOsgoodeHallLawSchool.

VirtualLearningEnvironments(VLEs)ResearchProjectTheGGSLwastheleadinstitutioninamulti-institutionalprojectexaminingtheimpactanduseofVLEsonlawschools,includingUniversityofWarwickandUniversityofLancaster.Thisone-yearproject(March2005-March2006)involvedthecreationofawebsitewhichwasaresourceforbestpractice,andwhichwasusedbylawschoolstoshowcaseexamplesofgoodpracticeacrosstheUK.Grantstotalled£12,000.
7. iPadsinLegalLearning(iLEGALL)ProjectIledaprojectatNorthumbriaLawSchool,collaboratingwithUniversityofGlamorganLawSchoolandtheLawSocietyofIreland,ontheuseofiPadsinlegaleducation.Theproject(2011-12)wasfundedbyHEA,BILETAandNorthumbria(£17,000)andoutputincludedprojectreports,iPadapps,courseware,conferencepapers(atBILETA2012andHEA2012),andpublicationintheEuropeanJournalofLawandTechnology.
8. ReviewofLegalServicesEducation–theLegalEducationTrainingReview(LETR)During2011-13IwasaprojectpartnerinthesuccessfulbidtoreviewlegaleducationinEnglandandWales(otherparticipants:ProfAvromSherr,ProfJulianWebb,ProfJaneChing).LETRwascommissionedbytheSRA,BSB,andIPLS,andisthemostwide-rangingreviewoflegaleducationineitherundergraduateorprofessionaleducationinEnglandandWalessincetheOrmrodReport,andakeyoverviewofmyapproachtoregulationoflegaleducation(andcurrentlyaresearchclusterinthePEARLcentreatANU).Seehttp://letr.org.uk

DevelopmentofanentireJDdegreeasonlineProblem-BasedLearning(PBL)AtANUCollegeofLawIdesignedahighlyinnovativenewdegree,aPBL-basedJDthatwillbedeliveredentirelyonline.Thedegreeisaworld-first–nootherLawSchoolhasattemptedthisformofdegreeeducation.ThecurriculumisfullyqualifyinginAustralia,andincludesMasterscomponentsatthelaterstagesofthedegree.TheCollegebroughttogetheramultidisciplinaryteam,withLawfacultyworkingalongsidetechnologists,educationalists,medicaleducationalistsandotherstodesign,structureandpopulatethecurriculum.WebeganthedegreeinMay2016.CurrentlytheprojectisalsoaresearchclusterinthePEARLcentreatANU.

NewsimulationenvironmentprojectdevelopmentIparticipateinaprojectbasedatQueen’sUniversity,Ontario,todevelopanewsimulationengineforinter-professionaltransactionallearning.TheprojectwonCAD250,000fromOntarioCentresofExcellence.TheapplicationwillbeusedbyaconsortiumofinternationallawschoolswhichIheadup,andwhichwillbedevelopedglobally,andiscurrentlyaresearchclusterinthePEARLcentreatANU.
