BRIEF BIO

Professor Patrick XW Zou, PhD UNSW, is Chair of Building and Construction Management and Fellow

of ANZSOG Institute for Governance at the University of Canberra (UC) since 2011. Prior to joining

UC, Dr Zou was Associate Professor and Program Director of Construction Management and

Property at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he obtained his PhD in Civil

Engineering in 1999 and served for more than a decade in various capacities including associate

professor (2006-11), senior lecturer (2003-6), lecturer (2000-3), and leadership roles such as director

of construction management and property program (2010-11), director of research students (2007-

10); director of construction project management master program (2004-6) and head of

construction management and economic research group (2002-4). Patrick is currently Supervisory

Chair of Construction Management at College of Civil Engineering Hunan University and Guest

Professor in Shenzhen University. Professor Zou was visiting academic at Tsinghua University,

University of Florida, National University of Singapore, and Renmin University of China.

Research - Professor Zou is an internationally recognised award-winning researcher in Risk

Management including theoretical development and practical applications, with a focus on

construction business and management, and he has won several major research grants from ARC,

NSFC and governments, totalling AU$1.24+ million; published 2 books, 2 book chapters; 150+ peer

reviewed journal articles and conference papers, provided 40+ invited lectures/keynote

presentations; undertaken several consultancy projects to governments and industries; successfully

supervised many PhD, Master and Honours students in the field of risk management.

Teaching - Professor Zou is award-winning teacher with a [2+3] teaching philosophy of “Student-

centred & Inspirational + Traditional, Innovative & Research-led” and he has taught at postgraduate

and undergraduate levels, including risk management, principles and practice of management,

construction management and construction technology.

Collaboration and Consultancy - Prof Zou has developed a wide international research collaboration

and engagement network with both academic colleagues and industry and has successfully

undertaken many collaborative research and consultancy projects. For example, Professor Zou has

very strong track records collaborations with top-tier Chinese universities such as Tsinghua

University, where he was a senior visiting scholar and successfully worked with the academics in the

Department of Construction Management on several research projects including the work on

developing risk management system for Beijing 2008 Olympics Games venue construction projects,

which was awarded the UK Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) International Innovation and

Research ICPMA Award in 2008 and an innovative paper on life-cycle risk management framework

for PPP infrastructure project which was awarded the prestige Emerald Literati Network of Awards

for Excellence Outstanding Paper Award (2009). Other example projects included China Capacity

Building Program (TN37) funded by AusAID and the Building Sustainability Index project funded by

NSW Government Department of Planning and Infrastructure, as well as work with Bovis Lend Lease

on construction safety risk management and APCC’s developing sustainable procurement guidelines,

work with ARUP on Beijing “Water Cube” Aquatic Centre’s design case study. Professor Zou was

Regional Vice President of Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Australasia.

Professor Zou is an award-winning researcher in Risk Management including theory development

and applications with a focus on construction business and management, such as Safety Risk

Management, Sustainable/Green Building Life-Cycle Risk Management; Complex Infrastructure

Project Life-Cycle Risk Management and Risk and Opportunity Management in the Chinese

Construction Market and Management and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). Professor Zou’s

current research and practice is Enterprise Risk Management for Government Organisations, NGO

and Construction Enterprises, which include governance, operational, reporting and compliance.

Professor Zou has published 150+ papers/articles career total, with 50+ articles in leading

international journals (most of them are A+ or A ranked by ERA); 70+ papers in international

conferences (most of them are A ranked by ERA); two books, two book chapters, two edited

volumes and two commissioned reports for governments and construction enterprises. He has also

been invited to edit special issues of risk management for International Journal of Construction

Management and International Journal of Project Organisation and Management. Professor Zou’s

new book “Construction Management New Directions 3rd Edition (2013) was recently published by

Wiley-Blackwell (http://au.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470674016.html).

Professor Zou has won many research grants from different sources including ARC, NSFC,

government departments, professional bodies and major construction enterprises, from Australia

and overseas, totalling over AU$1.15 million. He was also involved in several major contracted

research and consultancy international projects funded by the Australian government through

AusAID and the other sources, with an example of the China Capacity Building Program (TN37) which

was funded by AusAID worth more than AU$1.24 million and the other example is the Building

Sustainability Index project funded by NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

Professor Zou has successfully supervised many PhD, Master and Honours research students and

many of them won awards for their research outcomes and published their research results.

Professor Zou has also examined five PhD theses and one Master thesis as an external examiner

invited by different universities within and outside Australia.

TEACHING

Professor Zou has a [2+3] teaching philosophy and rationale which is “Student-centred &

Inspirational” + “Research-led, Innovative & Traditional”. He has undertaken research and published

20+ papers and one guideline on innovative teaching and educational technology (which includes

graduate attributes, team and group learning, e-learning, assessment, and student satisfaction).

Based on his research outcomes, Professor Zou has developed the ASK (Attitude, Skill and

Knowledge) Model to guide students learning, in his undergraduate and postgraduate classes.
