THE DEPARTMENT Accounting, Finance and Economics

With 83 academic staff, a number of research fellows and 6 administrative staff, the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics (AFE) is the largest department in the Griffith Business School and one of the largest across Griffith University. AFE is organised in four disciplines: Accounting, Finance and Financial Planning, Economics and Business Statistics, and Business Law and Taxation. The Head of Department, assisted by Portfolio Directors (Research, Teaching and Learning and Engagement), ensures the co-ordination of research, teaching and learning, and engagement activities across the four disciplines. Every year, AFE offers more than 150 courses to undergraduate, postgraduate, Honours and PhD candidates. The total enrolment in AFE courses exceeds 24,000 across five campuses (Nathan, Gold Coast, Logan, South Bank, Online) and different delivery modes (in person, on-line, dual). The Bachelor of Commerce has majors in Accounting, Finance, Financial Planning, and Economics, plus a minor in Taxation. All majors are accredited with the relevant professional bodies. At the postgraduate level, the Department hosts a Master of Accounting, Master of Professional Accounting, Master of Finance, and Master of Financial Planning. In terms of research degrees, the Department also hosts a Bachelor of Commence (Honours) and a large PhD program. The Department provides a conducive and supportive environment to its researchers. The Department also coordinates seminars, conferences and workshops, both on and off campus, often in cooperation with other universities, professional societies, and industry partners. Researchers are given the opportunity to operate in a collegial environment where they can exchange ideas, receive feedback on their research projects and grant applications, and be mentored by more senior and experienced academics. AFE also hosts visiting, adjunct and a substantial PhD program.

The Accounting Discipline The Accounting discipline consists of 19 staff members distributed across all academic levels, from A to E. The research interests and expertise of the accounting discipline staff cover a range of accounting areas including corporate governance, audit, financial reporting, management accounting, accounting information systems, gender and future developments in the accounting profession, and indigenous business. In pursuing these interests, staff are involved in a range of inter- and multi-disciplinary projects across the Department, the School, and universities nationally and internationally. Members of the discipline have been successful in publishing in esteemed journals including The Accounting Review, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, Accounting and Finance, and The International Journal of Accounting. They have also published in highly regarded business and management journals outside of the Accounting discipline as well as in journals of cognate disciplines such as finance and economics. Griffith University is a registered tuition provider for CPA Australia. Our Master of Accounting and Master of Professional Accounting programs have been designed to provide support for the CPA professional qualification. All of our accounting programs are fully accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and CPA Australia.
