Welcome to our Activity Guide!

GROUNDHOG DAY

“Most everyone is familiar with the February 2nd North American

tradition called ‘Groundhog Day’. If a certain rodent who spends most of

the year living in a cage in Pittsburgh emerges on the second day of

February and sees his shadow, back in the hole he goes and another six

weeks of winter is in store for us. However, if skies be cloudy when he

makes his exit, Spring is surely on it’s way. Every great story has it’s

variations. Some say that if the groundhog sees his shadow on February

2, he will return to sleep for four weeks, or it will rain on the seven

following Sundays.

First popularized in the US by a late 19th century western

Pennsylvania newspaper editor, the omen-bearing woodchuck,

‘Punxsutawney Phil’ remains famous. A group from Quarryville,

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania however proclaimed their town the only

authentic groundhog watchers’ haven. The Quarryville clan boasts the

largest contingent of ‘hog watchers’ and claim the highest rate (90%) of

successful prediction. Not to wallow in modesty, celebrants end each

February 2 in a local pub where they preform their club song (Sung to the

tune of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’)

‘Let the scientific fakirs gnash their teeth and stamp with rage-

Let astrologers with crystals wipe such nonsense from the page-

We hail the King of Prophets, who’s the world’s outstanding Sage-

TODAY THE GROUNDHOG COMES!

Glory! Glory! To the Groundhog,

Glory! Glory! To the Groundhog,

Glory! Glory! To the Groundhog,

TODAY THE PROPHET COMES!’”
