Professionalism in Pharmacy School• The majority of students within a professional program successfully

transition to be an outstanding professional!

• However, there are individuals and circumstances where this does not occur:

• Inappropriate use of social media or surfing the Web• Arriving late to class or leaving early• Shirking responsibilities in team assignments• Chronic absenteeism

• Creates an aura of “Academic Entitlement”• Associated with externalized responsibility for success and entitled

expectations

• Perceptions:• Knowledge is a right more than a privilege.• Educators are responsible for student learning, not the

student.• Effort, not performance, should be rewarded in grading.• Open or passive aggressive behavior towards faculty members

is acceptable if student expectations are not met.

Professionalism in Pharmacy School• Academic entitlement can occur to any student. (e.g. class leaders)

• Students and educators disagree on specific behaviors that are inappropriate. (e.g. technology)

• “Who do we blame?”• Millennials• Parents• Society• Academia and the Profession

– Provide high grades for mediocre work

• Student Consumerism• Defined as the perception by students that because they pay for their

education, they deserve to be treated as customers.

• Problems:• Lowers academic expectations for good students. • Encourages COPs to allow student progression to meet ACPE

requirements.
