You’ve probably heard by now about the passage last summer of the historic Early Start Act and the historic investments Washington State is making in child care and early learning. You’ve probably also heard that some child care providers are now required to join Early Achievers, Washington’s framework for improving the quality of child care statewide. But you may not have heard all of the important details about which providers must join and when. So here’s the scoop: All licensed child care providers who serve children ages 0 – 5 on Working Connections Child Care must join Early Achievers before Aug. 1, 2016. That’s only about five months away. Almost half of all the licensed child care providers in our state are already participating. Together they serve more than 70,000 Washington children. Early Achievers providers have access to many great, free resources, including:
• Needs-based grants of up to $500 for family child care programs and up to $1,000 for centers (Act soon – funding is limited!)
• Financial awards for quality
• Increased subsidy rates • Early childhood education scholarships
• On-site Coaching • Stable 12-month Working Connections Child Care subsidy slots
• Access to a substitute pool (details coming soon from the Department of Early Learning) What Else Do You Need to Know?
Child Care Check, operated by the Department of Early Learning, and Child Care Aware of Washington’s online child care search both now show Early Achievers participation status – meaning parents seeking child care can tell which providers are participating and which are not. There’s even space now in Child Care Check for Early Achievers providers to write their own program descriptions!
Thanks to input from both center-based and family home child providers, Early Achievers has been updated, simplified and improved. There are more tools and resources than ever before. It’s a great time to be in Early Achievers. Early Achievers and the Early Start Act – What You Need to Know Now
www.oppco.org/cca Page of 2 16

Spring 2016 Enhanced Courses
STEM in Early Care and Education
Instructor: Melanie Coyne
Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment; Level 2Class Description: This training is designed to offer an overview of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as it applies to teaching young children. Participants will discuss the components of teaching STEM to young children with a focus on hands-on discovery learning. The class covers methods of best practice for teaching young children and how to use inquiry to develop new ideas and solve problems. Washington State Early Learning Guidelines will be applied to aid them in their planning of STEM activities for young children. STEM kits wills be raffled off at this training to implement in your programs the next day.
Using the Environmental Rating Scale
Instructor: Bracken MarrenCore Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment and Health, Safety and Nutrition, Level 2Class Description:
The Environment Rating Scales are tools that can help us define “high quality” in all areas of care. We will study these tools as well as watch video clips of examples as you learn to use and score the tools. We will reflect on how you can use the tools in the future while working with providers. This class will focus on environments for children birth to 5 in licensed centers and family child care settings.
Screening and Assessment
Instructor: Pat Cavit
Core Competency: Child Growth & Development/Interactions; Level 2-3
Class Description: Early identification of potential delays is critical to help ensure children get the resources they need. When early learning programs gather information to learn about each child’s progress and needs, they are better able to individualize instruction. This training supports the Early Achievers Child Outcomes standard area focusing on Screening and Assessment of children. This a great opportunity to learn and exchange resources.
Using “Teacher Talk” to Support Learning
Instructors: Kristen Bowler-Marere
Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment; Level 3Class Description: Experts agree: The best teachers are also usually the best talkers! Children thrive when early childhood professionals intentionally use their words to model language, extend conversations, get children thinking, and give thought-provoking feedback. Think you are already doing well in this area? Come find out! We’ll discuss the areas in which most of us can improve the way we speak to children. This training supports Early Achievers by providing important instruction on skills related to the Instructional Support domain of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS).

Spring 2016 Enhanced Courses
Using “Teacher Talk” to Support Learning - Refresher Training
Instructors: Julie Wasilewski
Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment; Level 3
Class Description:
Until a new skill becomes an ingrained habit, we need reminders! This class is for Early Achievers participants that have already had some training on the CLASS tool, but want to refresh their skills - or further enhance their interactions with children- without taking the same class again. After a quick review of the CLASS tool, we’ll practice the skills that are the most difficult to incorporate into daily use.
Early Mathematics: Counting and Cardinality
Instructors: Jamie Ashton & Charlotte Zissel
Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment; Level 3
Class Description: Counting and cardinality is more than using the calendar! In this early learning numeracy training developed by OSPI, teachers of preschool and kindergarten children will explore developmental learning pathways that young children progress through in their understanding of counting and cardinality;. They will engage in activities that develop richer experiences and understanding of as well as develop strategies for incorporating canting activities into classroom routines.
