IMarEST – Preparing your

Professional Report/Extended CV

Checklist:

• Ensure that professional roles and positions are clearly documented.

• Ensure that evidence is provided for how all of the relevant professional competencies are met when applying for a category of Professional Registration.

Introduction The purpose of the Professional Report/Extended CV is to demonstrate to the Institute’s Membership Committee that an applicant satisfies the professional standards and competencies that are expected for the level of membership and/or registration that is being applied for. When a candidate also requires a Professional Review Interview for membership and/or registration, the Professional Report is used by the assessors to prepare for the interview. A good Professional Report/Extended CV should contain extensive evidence of an applicant’s professional competencies, responsibilities and experience. However, applicants should avoid submitting excessive and unnecessary documentation. Professional Reports/Extended CV’s should have a clear focus on the applicant’s specific roles and responsibilities, and should not be a generalised report on the overall projects that they have worked on.

The Professional Report/Extended CV The Professional Report/Extended CV should be a chronologically ordered CV that is based on a standard CV, but which has a strong focus on the relevant competencies for the level of membership and/or professional registration applied for. The report should clearly identify any relevant academic qualifications. The professional experience documented should start with the current role, and work backwards, and should highlight projects worked on, positions of seniority, skills developed, responsibilities held and evidence of management and leadership. Applicants should seek to demonstrate any personal achievements or career highlights in the report that they feel reflects positively on their professional competency. The applicant ought to include a paragraph or two for each job role so that the Membership Committee/PRI assessors can get a good idea of how the candidate has progressed through their career, and how they have developed their skills and competencies. This should be closely tied in to the competency areas listed in the relevant

standards document. The candidate should be aiming to provide evidence for all the competency areas in the CV, and should also attempt to highlight these competencies throughout the document. An effective method for pinpointing where specific competencies are being demonstrated is to add notations in the margin for the competency (‘A1’, ‘B3’, ‘D1’ for example) next to the passage of text that demonstrates that competency. For example, if someone looking to gain professional registration as an engineer has a sentence about their responsibilities in mentoring and developing junior staff and conducting appraisals, they should add ‘C3’ in the margin as this is the UK-SPEC competency relating to this responsibility (see example in the right margin). The Professional Report/Extended CV should provide evidence for all competency areas listed in the relevant Standards document, and the applicant should take care to ensure that they are providing clear documentation of when they have been meeting each specific competency throughout their career.

Supporting Evidence

Applicants may also find it beneficial to provide further supporting evidence in the form of a table mapping their professional experiences against the relevant professional competencies for the level of professional registration that they are applying for. Each specific competency should be supported by bullet-points of evidence. These should be from across different roles and projects, and don't need to be in a chronological order. A table of evidence for each competency area will complement the Professional Report/Extended CV by allowing the Membership Committee/PRI assessors to identify the applicant’s experience in meeting specific competencies.

Applicants may also wish to provide a list recording professional development activities and training courses that they have completed in recent years and a continuing professional development (CPD) plan to identify how they intend to maintain and develop their professional competency in the future.
