PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY OVERVIEWThe NSW TAFE Commission through the Treasury Managed Fund (TMF) provides Public Liability Indemnity for students undertaking Professional Experience.This indemnity covers legal liability for damage to property or injury to persons involving the Student during the Professional Experience.Incidents involving the Student or the Professional Experience must be reported immediately to the Professional Experience Coordinator.Under the NSW Work, Health and Safety Act 2011, all employers have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of anyone working at their place of work by:

providing systems of work and work environments that are safe and without risks to health; providing the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure the safety of

employees; maintaining places of work under their control in a safe condition; making arrangements for the safe use, handling and storage of substances, tools and equipment;

and providing adequate facilities for the welfare of employees

Responsibilities

Host organisations

The responsibilities of an organisation hosting TAFE NSW Higher Education students include: ensuring students are provided with a safe workplace ensuring students are informed of relevant health and safety requirements and procedures as

part of an appropriate induction to the workplace immediately informing the relevant TAFE NSW Course Coordinator of any accident, injury or

safety incident involving the student/s

TAFE NSW Higher Education staff

TAFE NSW Higher Education staff who supervise student placements have a responsibility to seek assurances from organisations hosting the students that the health and safety of these students is well-managed.The Professional Experience Coordinator should request that the work-based learning provider, through the nominated Host Company Contact, completes the checklist below.

Significant health and safety hazards

If the workplace of the host organisation has significant health and safety hazards, then in addition to having the supervisor from the host organisation sign the declaration in the checklist, the Professional Experience Coordinator should:

discuss health and safety management system procedures with the supervisor from the host organisation,

request the Host Company Contact to send evidence of these procedures, or sight evidence of the health and safety management system themselves.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE CHECKLIST FOR WORK PLACEMENTThe WHS checklist is required to ensure that TAFE NSW Higher Education and host companies provide safe workplaces for students as per Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

Student details, emergency contacts and the checklist must be returned by the host company at least two (2) weeks prior to intended commencement of the student placement.
