Professional Experience Liaisons Meeting 9/07/12

Students are to teach in the Learning Area that they covered in curriculum specialisation (EDUC3525)

At the conclusion of Professional Experience 1, judgments are made about the pre-service teacher’s readiness to continue into Professional Experience 2.

What this means – if they can competently discharge the pedagogical and content knowledge required for the middle years curriculum they can continue to PE2 and the senior years curriculum in 2013 (EDUC4729)

Note: Pre-service teachers should aim for weekly class contact equivalent to 60% of a teacher’s full teaching load.

E.g. Curriculum Time = 35 lessons/week30 lessons/week = full time load (5 NIT lessons)PST load = 18 lessons/week

Pre-service teachers should build towards teaching 60% of a full teaching load by week 3. (refer to page 14-15 for weekly guideline)

EDUC3525 Curriculum Specialisation prepares them for this PE placement in the middle years of schooling:

The PST should be writing unit plans - Expect that the PST can write unit plans

The PST should be writing lesson plans for every lesson - Expect that the PST can write lesson plans

Expect that the unit plans and lessons plans are written for student achievement of the learning outcomes of the curriculum document (MYIB/SACSA/Australian Curriculum)

Initial contact (p17 of the Handbook)

• The university liaisons’ initial contact with the pre-service teacher is usually via email introduction, clarifying expectations and requesting a copy of the teaching timetable so that placement visits can be organised.Visit 1• University Liaison meets with mentor teacher(s) to review individual pre-service teacher progress to date, observes individual pre-service teachers teaching a lesson, provides relevant feedback and assists reflection on the teaching performance; discuss Interim Review with pre-service teacher and teacher mentor(s).Visit 2• Observe individual pre-service teachers teaching a lesson and provide relevant feedback and assist reflection on the teaching performance; discuss the final assessment with the individual pre-service teacher and teacher mentor(s).

Initial contact

Hi <Pre-service teacher>I am your Professional Experience liaison for Professional Experience 1, term 3, 2012. A couple of housekeeping items.1. Please forward to me your teaching timetable asap the first week of term 3, and preferably no later than Wednesday afternoon. Include room number, year level, subject and mentor teacher/s name on this timetable. If there are classes you will slide into after week 1 and 2 (ie, you won’t be initially taking these classes) please also clearly indicate these. I will email a visit schedule by the end of week 1. 2. You should be familiar with the Professional Experience (PE) Website http://www.flinders.edu.au/ehl/education/professional-experience/3. Supply your mentor teacher/s with a hard copy of the Interim Review and the PE1 3rd Year & 1st Year Mteach report. Read the relevant pages of the Professional Experience Handbook about the report and discuss this information with your mentor teacher/s on the first day or two of placement; available on the PE website under the headings: Report Templates Professional Experience Handbook.4. It is a good idea to book a time with your mentor teacher/s to go through the Interim Review, towards the end of week 2, so there are no ‘surprises’ at what it being reported and there is some time to attempt to address any areas of concern (should they exist) before the end of the 20 day Professional Experience placement. The Interim Review is to be faxed to the PE office, 8201 2568.5. A reminder that you are expected to attend ‘home-class’, yard duty and staff meetings with your main mentor/s while on placement. You are expected to be on-site for the span of hours of the school day.6. If you are ill or running late (eg. car breaks down), it is expected that you will follow the schools procedures for staff phoning in absences, provide lesson plans for the “relief teacher”, and get a sick certificate (if applicable).7. Ensure that you provide your mentor teacher/s with a lesson plan at the start of each lesson you teach. I encourage you to use the proforma in the 2012 Handbook unless otherwise directed by your mentor/s. I will ask to see your unit plans and lesson plans when I visit. Complete the Interim Review at the end of week 2 in collaboration with the pre-service teacher and University Liaison, and fax or email to the Professional Experience Office (p20 of the handbook)

Complete PE1 typed report, and provide a personal note of advice to the pre-service teacher detailing how the pre service teacher can act to ensure a successful final professional experience (p21-22 of the handbook).

Reports to be emailed to the Professional Experience Office within 2 weeks of completion.(refer to page 16-17 for an explanation of the role of the university liaison)

Please note the following important points regarding coordination of the Final Report:• It is the role of the university liaison to ensure that the completed report is forwarded to the PE

Office• All comments are to be typed directly into the report• It is not a DECD requirement that all parties sign the report; you, as university liaison, may sign

on their behalf• School/site mentors/principals and students are to complete their section of the report, type

their name at the bottom of the comment and email the report to you for completion and sign off• Please do not send your comments to the PE office staff for them to ‘cut and paste into the

report’. This is very unprofessional.• The university liaison is able to sign the report on behalf of all parties• When the report is completed please email to the School of Education, Professional Experience

Office (GPO Box 2100, Adelaide) within two weeks of completion of the placement [email protected]
