Professional Certificate Programme in Design Thinking and Innovation Management | 1
In today's evolving business landscape, innovation is the new corporate mantra for business survival and growth across entities ranging from startups to multinational organisations. Disruptive innovation then has been proven to have the potential to transform complex and expensive products/services that were previously available only to a few people, into simpler and economical products available to many. This innovation stems at the root of design thinking, a structured human-centred process that allows businesses to think, act, learn hands-on approaches and apply a new mindset to 'business-as-usual' practices.
The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM Kozhikode) has designed the Professional Certificate Programme in Design Thinking and Innovation Management to equip learners to build a systems approach to innovation in products and services. This programme is developed in collaboration with the Laboratory for Innovation, Venturing and Entrepreneurship at IIM Kozhikode (IIMK LIVE), a business incubator and entrepreneurship development centre set-up with the support of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. This programme is a first-of-its-kind in India as it is rooted in driving three fundamental levers of strategic importance to any business – customer-centricity (design thinking), product innovation, and building a culture of innovation.

Professional Certificate Programme in Design Thinking and Innovation Management | 6
Several challenges are existing in this business world today with regards to complexity in technology, requirements to give variety in products and services, and changing customer preferences. Design Thinking is playing a significant role in meeting these challenges and finding pragmatic solutions to solving these wicked problems. Its process and tools are being increasingly adopted to bring innovations in business. The essence of design thinking is a human-centered, iterative problem-solving approach to get innovative solutions to any kind of organisational challenge. Design thinking rests on principles such as user involvement, problem framing, experimentation, visualisation, and diversity - all critical skills for entrepreneurs. This calls for businesses to have a good understanding of the strategic importance of design and the tactical approach of design thinking. Design Thinking and Innovation Management will enable entrepreneurs/executives to approach new product/service development from a fresh perspective, with a focus on systematic, targeted thinking that results in a repeatable, human-centered problem-solving process.
It has been a constant endeavour of IIM Kozhikode to develop relevant programmes to keep in mind the importance of design, innovations, and its management. This certificate programme was developed with the system’s approach, which eventually combines design, technology, business, and human approach to management to come out with innovative solutions to complex problems. It will help you to move from understanding the essential concepts of design thinking and innovation management to apply those concepts in different scenarios to get confidence to find solutions to real-world problems. Any executive, including entrepreneurs and functional team members who are responsible for driving innovation and growth, can benefit from this programme.
