details
A theoretical model was developed for heat transfer and condensation inside a typical proposed exhaust heat exchanger passage of a fuel
cell condenser in the presence of a non-condensing gas. The predicted flow regime is annular. The model applies to any vapour-gas combination. For a prescribed composition, temperature, pressure and
flow rate of the gas mixture at inlet and prescribed wall temperature distribution along the tube, the model predicts the local heat-transfer
and condensation rates and the local bulk vapour composition, temperature and pressure. The model has been validated using experimental data for air-steam mixtures over a wide range of relevant
variables (steam-air inlet composition, pressure, temperature and flowrate; coolant inlet temperature and flowrate). The model can be
used in conjunction with a standard approach for the outside heat transfer to give complete model for an air-cooled heat exchanger passage.
Summary of work done
When using water as coolant (for convenience) to simulate the
airside resistance in the actual fuel cell condenser application, it was necessary to operate at low velocity and hence low Reynolds number. A laminar flow coolant mixer was designed, fabricated and
tested for this purpose.
A test rig was designed and all major components manufactured
and assembled.
An outline scheme was drawn up for modelling the in-tube heat
and mass transfer processes and a database of relevant thermo-physical properties assembled. Property equations for the vapour-gas mixture were verified and subsequently the used to develop a
full.
Thermocouples, used in the main rig, were calibrated against a
platinum resistance thermometer having high precision (accuracy better than 0.05 K).

Commission runs on the main test rig were completed and
experimental runs using air-steam mixtures were carried out followed by data analysis and reduction. The same was used to validate the model and good agreement was found.

A comprehensive literature survey was carried out to review and identify promising thermochemical cycles for Hydrogen production.

Successfully completed a one-year course of the Training School of BARC (1994 - 1995). The selection to this School was on an all-
India basis and I was among the 8 Chemical engineers eventually selected. This school provided all necessary skills required for carrying out further research and included written and oral
examinations on courses related to Chemical and Nuclear engineering. The course ended with a 3-month project, which
involved “Theoretical modelling of condensation inside a vertical tube in the presence of a non-condensing gas” after which I joined the Chemical Engineering Division of the Research Centre as
Scientific Officer „C‟.
Contributed significantly in various phases of the Divisional project,
i.e. “Development of prototype 1500 ampere Fluorine cell and commissioning of 5 TPA Sulphur Hexafluoride pilot plant”. This
plant was the first of its kind in India. I was successfully involved in the process design, procurement, installation and commissioning of Fluorine cell and SF6 pilot plant.
Was promoted to the grade of Scientific Officer „D‟ in August 1998.
Was involved in the process design of the Fluidised bed denitration
facility for the next research project before proceeding to study for a Ph.D.
