ASPECT Studios has grown on the strength of its reputation for design-led solutions. We are recognised as a company with the capability to deliver creative and sustainable urban and regional projects. As a group, ASPECT Studios has seen its landscape and public realm projects realised with multi-award winning results throughout Australia and internationally.

ASPECT Studios practice in a culturally aware studio environment where projects are resolved through discussion of ideas, research, design and technical expertise. Our designs are based on ethical responsibility, responsiveness to the client and an approach that embraces the ‘total landscape’ - one comprising social, economic, and ecological considerations. Design quality is the ultimate achievement of these pursuits.

ASPECT Studios supports a healthy culture of research and education through design tours, competition entries, teaching and strong links with universities and professional associations.

Landscape ArchitectureThese connections keep all of ASPECT Studios’ practices engaged with current thinking and techniques.

Technology also forms part of this contemporary approach, and is an evolving tool for research, visualisation, testing and design.

Good management of a project is not limited to its timely delivery. We see our role as continually reviewing the objectives of the project, changing processes to suit each project, and seeking and providing advice and input to/from other disciplines.

The practice’s ability to consistently provide in this field stems from our ability to integrate ecologically balanced solutions and a contemporary design approach with excellence in facilitation, consultation and inclusive participation.

Placemaking‘Placemaking’ is a term used to describe the process of creating meaningful and layered places. As designers of the public realm our training and design process is focused on bringing together and expressing the essential qualities of place, the landscape, its history, social rituals, and cultural significance into the design of place.

Placemaking is about designing cities that cater to people. It aims to promote human interaction, connection to the street, and allow people to participate in their public domain. Our approach creates lively neighbourhoods and inviting public spaces that attract people because they are comfortable, pleasurable, culturally appropriate, and interesting.

The most successful examples of placemaking operate and succeed on a number of levels and benefit from close engagement with the client and a highly collaborative process, including artists, architects, the local experts, and end users of place - the public.

Successful placemaking extends beyond the physical design and delivery of the projects, integrates long lasting ‘Place Management’, and ongoing activation through curated events and day to day activities which facilitate vitality, interest, civic pride, and social interaction.

As both places and people are increasingly exposed to a singular global expression, our desire for authentic place-based qualities has increased. ASPECT Studios craft designs that respond to the local identity and values of place, we design places that people want to be.

Living ArchitectureASPECT Studios is leading the way in the emerging area of “Living Architecture” in Australia. Put simply, Living Architecture is the integration of plants and water with built form. It includes green roofs, green facades, and green walls.

Living Architecture has risen in popularity in both Europe and North America, and is now being recognised in Australia as a critical concept in responding to climate change and the increased demand of water and energy in our cities. ASPECT Studios is at the forefront of this movement in Australia. Our command of the technical requirements and systems suited to Australia, combined with our design expertise is helping to lead the integration of greening and architecture.

ASPECT Studios’ vision is of a city where natural processes are integrated into the very fabric of the urban environment - where plants, water, soil and built form are as one - and together these elements promote a healthy community and resilient environment – a Living Architecture!

Key benefits of Living Architecture include:• Contribution to human wellbeing

through the provision of green space • Improvement in the thermal

performance of buildings• Regulation of the urban heat island effect

on the wider city• Regulation of storm water impacts on

both buildings and the surrounding environment

• Integration of water recycling and reduced usage in buildings

• Contribution to biodiversity values in cities

• Clear statements of commitment to sustainable design

• Increased property values and improved amenity

• Achieving environmental ‘stretch targets’ such as ‘net zero water, energy, waste

ASPECT Studios seeks throughout its practice to reduce the carbon footprint of its projects and to improve the health and well-being of the community and the environment. This can be achieved through improved planning and design, product selection and use of “Green Infrastructure” systems. We define Green Infrastructure as the natural systems that underpin and are integrated with our urban fabric.

Green Infrastructure along with Living Architecture, Urban Forests, and Water Sensitive Urban Design form an interrelated web of benefits that respond to the pressures of urbanisation and climate change.

These are the key Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD) methods and elements that the Landscape Architecture profession is actively involved in.

Green Infrastructure

Victorian Desalination Plant and Ecological Reserve, Wonthaggi, VIC, Australia, 2013

Their application reconsiders engineered infrastructure to provide increased natural benefits on site.

These ESD solutions can be provided within project budgets and also contribute to the long term financial savings to the projects through increased life span, reduced maintenance costs and improved environmental marketability.

To ensure that we stay at the forefront of sustainable thinking and products, we consistently engage with ESD professionals to peer review our work to ensure that the quality and level of environmental performance is optimised to budget and aesthetic outcomes.

Urbanism gives clients an integrated and holistic approach to designing places that make a difference. We seek to enhance the lives of all people and natural systems in a long lasting way.

Urbanism delivers creative spatial visions and solutions by bringing together our experience in the cross-related fields of master planning, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, urban infrastructure, urban economics, and community engagement. We add value by drawing from our international design and policy experience in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Asia.

We take delight in making sense of complex environments, no matter how large or small and no matter how many players. We exploit our understanding of urban processes to bring forward design excellence. We are nimble and opportunistic in our strategic approach.

Urbanism

Victoria Harbour Master Plan, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, ASPECT|OCULUS, 2011

Urbanism assembles collaborative teams of specialist experts to meet the unique demands of each project, place and client. We are committed to listening to and collaborating with clients and communities who understand their environments and objectives.

Communication which inspires and can be readily understood and supported is a central part of our approach. We insist on a three dimensional communication of place, beyond the plan. We give high level master planning and design advice to all tiers of government.

Architectural Visualisations (Arch Vis) are alluring images that best promote a project. They are modelled to the highest level of detail to accurately present the project in the best possible way.

A Photomontage, or 2.5D Visualisation, is the result of compositing a real-life still shot with a digital model. Photomontages are generally used as a quick method of visually representing the design intention within the real-life environment. Because of this, they are perfect for development applications, securing planning permits and using during planning hearings.

Animations, or fly-throughs, are a traditional way to present a project to clients, the public and other stakeholders. The emphasis is on the cinematic experience. Through lighting, cinematography, and animated people, cars and landscaping, the viewer is able to grasp the complexity and spatial qualities of large projects. 3D models can also be inserted into prerecorded video footage using a technique called Camera Matching.

Serious Games are designed primarily for purposes other than pure entertainment. Serious Games are ideal for public awareness and education, training and simulation.

Spatial Prototyping uses game engine technology to communicate complex projects to the public and project stakeholders. The solution is an interactive virtual reality application ideal for urban planning and development projects.

As a practice ASPECT Studios is keenly aware of the importance of play experiences that children have and the effect that this has on the quality of their lives and their development into capable and adaptable adults. We strive to create playable spaces in all of our work and understand that ‘playable space’ is not restricted to designated playgrounds, but includes the daily environment of children - the interstitial spaces, such as a generous flight of stairs with a handrail that is great to climb on and slide down, or a mound of leaves and branches left on the street verge that provides resources to build a temporary cubby house.

To facilitate play and provide stimulating environments in which the many kinds of play can be carried out requires a shift in thinking about how public space is planned and managed.

Integrated PlayspacesWe also understand the importance of interaction with and exposure to nature, natural elements, ecosystems, and natural forces in the development of healthy children. To support children’s interaction with nature we are working to protect and restore remnant natural spaces and to provide increased vegetation in urban areas. This includes work to include water infiltration gardens in streets and parks that allow children to experience the ephemeral passing of water from the roofs and paved areas, through filtration gardens and into the aquifers below.

Ultimately we believe that by providing better environments for children the whole community benefits.
