Research Activities

In IBM Research and academia, I have been involved with research projects mainly related to HPC (High Performance Computing), big data analytics, big graph analytics, machine learning , large-scale traffic simulation for Smarter cities, stream computing, etc. The following list is several projects (not all) I worked or am currently working from 2004 to present in IBM Research. 1. Artificial Intelligence for Financial Fraud Detection (2015 – present)

I have been leading a world-wide team that focuses on AI (artificial intelligence) for financial institutions. It includes various techniques such as large-scale graph analytics, big data processing, machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision. Since 2015, I have designed and implemented a novel method called graph-powered machine learning to detect fraudent activities in banks such as anti-money launder and fraud detection or compute some risks for non-performing loan activities. This project comes from multi-dicipline research areas that I have been working such as high-performance computing, graph analytics and machine learning. My accomplishment has been introduced by multiple large banks and also now integrated with the IBM Watson product.

2. Large-Scale Graph Processing and Machine Learning (2010-present) In the big data processing area, large-scale graph processing is one of the important and challenging areas to analyze a variety of applications with billion-scale graphs such as Human Brain, social network, web, cyber security graph, RDF graph, e-commerce, and so forth. In this research I am leading a couple of large-scale graph relevant research including a highly scalable graph analytics algorithm and library, and also the method that uses the state-of-the art hardwares such as GPGPUs. Also my team has been tackling the famous benchmark called Graph500 that ranks the performance of graph algorithms on supercomputers. So far we have continue to achieve at least 3rd score since 2011/11 at the international supercomputer conference. Also I am leading an open-source large-scale graph processing library called ScaleGraph since 2011/10, and getting a lot of attentions from communities such as Graphlab. I Just mention one of the research relevant to highly scalable graph algorithms on 4096 GPUs. We proposed a highly optimized parallel and distributed BFS on GPU for the Graph500 benchmark for supercomputers and evaluate the performance of our implementation using TSUBAME2.0 supercomputer in Japan. We analyze the performance of our implementation and the result shows that inter-node communication limits the performance of our GPU implementation. We also propose SIMD Variable-Length Quantity (VLQ) encoding for compression of communication data with GPU. We achieve 317 GTEPS (billion traversed edges per second) with scale 35 (a large graph with 34.4 billion vertices and 550 billion edges) using 1366 nodes and 4096 GPUs. With this implementation, the upgraded TSUBAME2.5 supercomputer is ranked 1st in the ranking list of Green Graph500 recently announced in November 2013.

3. Smarter City Technology: X10-based Large Scale Agent-based Simulation Platform and its Application to Transportation (2011-2016)

I have been working on XAXIS and its application to the traffic simulator called Megaffic. XAXIS is a highly scalable distributed platform built on top of the IBM's X10 language for running a variety of large-scale agent simulations such as traffic simulation. Our experiment of running 10 million of vehicles in the country-wide road network on top of 1200 CPU cores in a supercomputer - located at Tokyo Institute of Technology - was the first attempt in this research area and selected as the simulation platform in the Japanese government project starting from 2012/10 for 5.5 years. Many IBM's Smarter City projects - in such cities as Nairobi in Kenya, Melbourne in Australia, Sendai in Japan, Mexico, etc - have also chosen XAXIS as the simulation platform for their city planning and disaster management.

4. BIG Data: Stream Computing Platform for Large-Scale Streaming Data (2009-present) In IBM, I contributed to the successful completion of the first PoC project in Japan using InfoSphere Streams with NTT East (Largest telecom company in Japan that has 50 million users) in terms of various aspects such as application design, architectural decision, performance optimization and so forth. Also during the PoC project, I just found several findings such as code optimization, allocation strategy using memory consumption. After successful completion of Proof of Concept for NTT East, I engaged in a production project for building the next generation billing system on top of InfoSphere Streams. The project is successfully concluded as the first customer case in Japan that uses InfoSphere Streams in the middle of August, and the real service has been started since 2011/06 and it is now expanded to NTT West as well. I also have been working more on the research of stream computing on a cluster of nodes that enables real-time processing for a large amount of streaming data such as microblogging and other physical sensors from various aspects. I am currently leading various projects such as GPGPU-based optimization, large-scale graph stream processing, Cloud-based stream computing, automatic stream program optimization, integration with MapReduce processing platform, etc.

5. Cloud / Grid Computing / Distributed Computing (1999- )

My main contribution is published in the most top-ranked conference, Supercomputing 2001. In my paper, we propose JiPANG (A Jini-based Portal Augmenting Grids) that is a portal system and a toolkit which provides uniform access interface layer to a variety of Grid systems, and is built on top of Jini distributed object technology. JiPANG performs uniform higher-level management of the computing services and resources being managed by individual Grid systems such as Ninf, NetSolve, Globus, etc. In order to give the user a uniform interface to the Grids JiPANG provides a set of simple Java APIs called the JiPANG Toolkits, and furthermore, allows the user to interact with Grid systems, again in a uniform way, using the JiPANG Browser application. With JiPANG, users need not install any client packages before-hand to interact with Grid systems, nor be concerned about updating to the latest version. Such uniform, transparent services available in a ubiquitous manner we believe is essential for the success of Grid as a viable computing platform for the next generation.

6. X10 – Highly Productive Parallel Programming Language (2010-2011) X10 is a new language that brings highly productive parallel programming environment and I had worked on the language implementation and the underlying optimal communication mechanism. The software is now published as an open-source software.

7. Scalable PHP runtime (2007-2009) PHP language is gaining much popularity from open source projects and I worked the project of implementing a scalable and high-performance PHP runtime. This artifact was delivered to IBM WebSphere product.

8. High Performance XML and Web Service Platform (2004-2006) I worked on the optimization of XML-related software processing such as SOAP Deserialization XML Schema Validation, XML Parsing that are key enablers for realizing SOA and Web 2.0.

9. Applying Model Driven Architecture to Banking Industry (2006) I co-worked with consultants in IBM Consulting Service (IBCS) and customers in the banking industry, working on a proof-of-concept project which aimed at applying model driven architecture technology to real business customer cases.

10. Development of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) processor (2005) I was responsible for leading the development team which implemented IBM’s XBRL processor which is becoming de-facto standard specification for financial information. XBRL is adopted by many financial organizations such as The Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Bank of Japan,
