VG Energy Biomass Solutions
Tariff Name Eligible Size kW
(nominal thermal output) Tariff Rate (pence/kWh) Tariff Duration
Small Biomass up to 199 kW Tier 1: 8.6p & Tier 2: 2.2p 20 years
Medium Biomass 200kW to 999kW Tier 1: 5.3p & Tier 2: 2.2p 20 years
Large Biomass 1000kW and above 1p 20 years
Tier 1 tariff applies annually up to tier break, and Tier 2 above. The tier break is 1,314hr x installed capacity (kW)
Biomass (or Wood-fuelled) systems burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide heat for central heating and hot water systems. This can be for domestic use or for larger commercial requirements.
To incentivise the uptake of modern and
efficient biomass boilers, the government has
introduced a programme called the “Renewable
Heat Incentive” or RHI. This programme enables
payment to the owner of the Biomass
equipment for every unit of heat energy that
their system produces. The rates that are paid
for each of these units are dependant on the
installed system size and are shown in the table
below. These rates are index linked (RPI), which
means that the rates will increase each year in
line with inflation.
Currently the RHI is for commercial customers
only, with domestic customers being eligible in
the near future.
Biomass is a renewable energy technology and is
classified as Carbon neutral. As trees grow they
absorb Carbon from the atmosphere (and
produce Oxygen) this carbon is stored in the
tree. If this tree was to be left to decompose,
this captured Carbon would be released back to
the atmosphere over a few years, burning that
material will also release the Carbon but will
make use of the energy in the process.
VG Energy agricultural customers find benefits in
both the heating of their buildings (including
residences) as well as providing heat for specific
farming activities, including the heating of
chicken sheds and heating water for dairy
purposes.
All VG Energy Biomass installations are Fully
MCS certified (where required) to allow our
customers to make the most of the RHI scheme.

Biomass Boiler and Fuel Types
Wood chip Boilers are extremely controllable, as much so as conventional oil or
gas boilers. The wood chips are fed from the store to the boiler by a fully
automated auger system. Wood chips are a fuel that is domestically produced,
unaffected by economic crisis, and environmentally friendly.
Pellet Boilers are also extremely controllable, pellets fed via a fully automated
auger directly into the boiler. The pellets are made from compressed wood
chips, have extremely high calorific values, and very low moisture content. With
the efficiency of the combustion chamber, controllability and high quality wood
pellets efficiencies of 95% and even higher can be achieved with added bonus
that it is a carbon neutral heat source.
Log Burners have similar economics as the above two technologies, but do not
have an automated fuel delivery setup. Logs are loaded into the boiler by hand,
generally once a day depending on the size of the boiler. Log burners are only
suitable for smaller installations as manual feeding is not generally suitable in
large commercial situations.
VG Energy specialise in Biomass Systems that are
designed to run on multiple fuel types which can
give our customers future flexibility to use the most
cost effective fuel available at the time.
There are three main types of Biomass Boilers: Pellet
Boilers, Wood Chip Boilers, and Log Burning Boilers.
The choice fuel and the supply of that fuel is
dependant on the individual customer’s situation.
A lot of VG Energy’s farming customers prefer to use
Wood Chips, as they are generally available on their
land through the sustainable management of
woodlands, and from also making use of any fallen
trees on the property. Having this source of fuel on
their property removes any purchase and transport
costs and makes the return on the investment even
higher.

The Endurance X-29 is a medium sized wind turbine that has
been engineered by Norwin, a Danish wind turbine company
with over 25 years experience, and manufactured by
Endurance Wind Power in the UK, it is a 225kW wind turbine
with a 29m rotor diameter that has been designed to produce
renewable energy efficiently, reliably, safely and quietly.
The X-29 is ideal for farms, community projects as well as
commercial and industrial sites.
The X-29's very efficient generator operates at a low level
resistance allowing the turbine to start producing energy at a
wind speed of just 4 m/s. This makes the X-29 an ideal
solution for those wishing to reap a higher power yield
than a smaller turbine, yet who don’t want to or cannot
install a large 500kW or a 750kW turbine.

Engineered Simplicity - Stall Regulated
Known in the industry as “Bomb Proof”
”When simplicity makes sense” are the keywords for the
Norwin 225 kW turbines, now manufactured by Endurance
Wind Power. The origin of the turbine goes back to 1984
when the first turbine of this family was installed. Since then
several hundred have been installed on three continents.
Some turbines have been in operation for almost 30 years –
without experiencing major problems – and are still running.
Throughout their history, it has been of utmost importance to
Norwin that machine simplicity is the focus to keep
maintenance costs down.

Argosy turbines are exceptionally versatile and can be configured to fit an array of
applications. The Argosy turbines are American designed and manufactured in the Argosy
facility in Ohio. Argosy strive for simplicity in their turbine design, this, combined with
Argosy’s commitment to quality, means that their equipment is built to last with minimal
on-going servicing and
maintenance costs during the
lifetime of the product.
As a turbine of this size will
generally be required to operate
for 140,000 hours in it’s lifetime,
it is vital to purchase a machine

Gaia-Wind 133 11kW “Designed for locations with average annual wind
speeds of between 10-17mph (4.5-7.5 m/s),
the 133 turbine is ideally suited to sites
with large open spaces such as farms,
rural properties, businesses,
and community projects.” High energy production: A large 13m blade allows the turbine to capture much more energy from the wind than similar rated turbines, which means higher electricity production.
Faster payback: High energy production means earlier payback on your investment, and greater earnings.
Rigorously tested design: Nearly 20 years of Danish design experience and field testing. Rigorously tested and approved by Risø in Denmark (HB Certificate), TÜV-NEL in United Kingdom (MCS Accreditation), and NREL in USA. Quiet running: One of the quietest turbines of its size thanks to a constant speed blade rotation. Reliability and safety: Three levels of braking mechanisms ensure that the blade never runs out of control.
Available parts: Quality off-the-shelf components are used so you can always be assured of spare parts.
Warranty: Five year warranty

Energy production: The Gaia-wind 133 is one of the
most productive small wind turbines in the 10-20kW range. It is a highly productive and quiet running MCS certified turbine, designed to operate in moderate wind speeds. The turbine's large blade design means more renewable
energy collected from the wind, and more electricity.

Wind Turbine Feasibility Studies
A Wind Turbine Feasibility Study from VG
Energy is a low cost method of determining
what turbine, or turbines, would be the
perfect size for your site. It can be a great
first step on the path to obtaining a
successful planning consent for your wind
energy development. It also lowers the risk
of coming up against significant issues
during the planning process, these
potential issues can waste time and money
if these are not properly understood early
on in the process.
The comprehensive assessment made on
your site will determine what the maximum
allowable size that a turbine could be, and
what the best location, or locations on your
site would be.
Our experienced and highly trained planning and consultancy
staff will provide detailed information on each of the following:
Current national, regional and local planning policies.
Potential radar constraints – both MoD and NATS.
Potential landscape and visual impacts.
Potential historic and cultural heritage constraints.
Potential noise and/or shadow flicker receptors.
Potential designated environmental sites.
Onsite ecological features.
Wind resource identification at the site.
Site access and road design.
Identification of electrical grid connection potential and associated costs.
Summary of findings and Recommendations.
The outcome of this process is a comprehensive
Feasibility Study that will present a range of turbine options
that would be feasible at your site.

the very best value for money as well as the most
comprehensive assessment procedure available.
Our expert and experienced planning consultants,
through repeated success, have earned VG Energy
one of the highest regarded reputations in the
business. VG Energy’s success can be attributed to
the fact that our objectives are closely aligned to
our customers, as both parties desire the project
to quickly succeed so that the project can be built.
For further information or for details of our pricing
structure please contact your sales advisor.
The VG planning packs are detailed below and are
divided into power output and height categories.

Quick Assessment This is a cost effective way of getting a better estimate of your
site wind speed than the industry standard NOABL database.
Virtual Met Mast (VMM) Virtual Met Mast™ provides a valuable solution for the small
and medium wind market. It provides a low cost, highly
accurate assessment of the long-term wind conditions at a
specified site at an early stage in the process without having
to install a site mast.
Generates key statistics - mean wind speed, direction, wind
shear, 50 year maximum gust, and turbulence
High certainty outputs - have been verified against 1,000 site-
years of data from more than 60 sites in the UK and Europe
Virtual Met Mast Plus (VMM+) VMM+ combines the accuracy of the VMM (above) with short

Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions
49
Why Clark Thomson Insurance Brokers?
For a number of years we have been involved in the renewable energy sector providing advice and insurance cover for wind, wave and tidal energy devices. We are Chartered Insurance Brokers with 8 offices throughout Scotland.
Clark Thomson offer access to some of the world’s leading renewable energy insurers, who have specific industry knowledge and proven track records in providing insurance solutions for this industry
What cover is available under our micro generation policy?
Clark Thomson Insurance Brokers Ltd offer an “All Risks” cover (fire, lightning, explosion, aircraft, malicious damage, earthquake, storm, flood, impact, theft and accidental damage) including breakdown and resultant loss of income.
Employers Liability and Public Liability insurance can also be arranged if required.
Cover is available throughout the United Kingdom.
Is Breakdown cover required if the turbine is protected by the Manufacturers Warranty?
This is a fair question but it is unlikely that the Manufacturers warranty will cover the following which are covered by our policy :-
Operator error, other than failure to maintain.
Failure or fluctuation of the electricity supply.
Resultant loss of income.
How is a Loss of Income claim calculated?
The insurers would examine the income generated by the turbine historically against the period of interruption.
They would also consider the wind speeds during the period of interruption.
Your Insurer may look to obtain performance data from turbines in similar areas for the period of interruption.
All of the above information would be considered along with the size and type of turbine involved.
What are the key factors determining the premium?
Make of turbine
Value of turbine
Estimated annual income
Claims experience
There are also discounts for multi-turbine projects.
What are the main exclusions?
Radioactive Contamination
Sonic Booms
Terrorism (this can be purchased separately for an additional premium)
War
Wear and Tear and other Gradually Operating Causes
Prototypical or Experimental equipment
Deliberate Act in withholding or restricting supply of public utilities
If I did have a claim, what is the excess?
The material damage excess will vary depending on the size of the turbine with a minimum of £500. The loss of income section will carry a minimum of a 7 day excess period.
How can you obtain a quotation from Clark Thomson Insurance Brokers Ltd?
Quotations and cover are arranged directly with Clark Thomson via:

The VG Energy Process
Our range of advice will cover each stage of the development and installation process. We initially supply some general information on our products and services which you will find in this booklet and in further documentation as required. If you would like some more specific advice on what renewable system is suitable for you, then one of our survey team will come to your property to determine your requirements and explain your options. They will also conduct a full site survey in order to ascertain the best possible solution for you or your business.
During the site survey we will discuss your renewable energy needs in detail, assess your property for suitability, assist in choosing the right system for your needs and advise you on the next steps to having your project supplied, installed and commissioned by VG Energy.
We will then send you a full quotation that will detail the recommended system and the costs.
If you wish to proceed with the system as quoted, then a deposit or planning fee is required to be paid to VG Energy. We then obtain any consents or agreements that may be required.
Once Planning and Grid Connection have been gained a full supply, install, and maintenance contract is entered into. VG Energy are unique in that we perform all of these steps in-house with our own fully qualified and professional staff.
During the procurement, construction and installation stages a VG Energy Project Manager will be assigned to be your point of contact during this process. This ensures that you are well informed of the progress and enables each stage of your installation to be carried out to the highest standard.
See the chart near the back of this document for further details of the full process of successfully developing a renewable energy project.
VG Energy Offices
VG Energy has front line offices in easy to reach locations in different geographical areas of the
UK. Each of these front line offices has local sales consultants as well as local planning staff that understand the local councils and District Network Operators (DNOs). The local staff are backed up by the full weight of the resources at VG Head Office as well as the VG Operations Office.
The VG Operations Office encompasses the VG installation, commissioning and maintenance functions as well as the spare parts depot. The large spare parts warehouse is situated beside the turbine storage warehouse and both are managed from the adjoining operations office.
See the back cover for details of the current office locations, and members of our surveying team are also stationed throughout the UK. Call our head office or visit our web site for further information.
An Explanation of the UK FiT Scheme
The UK Feed-in Tariff Scheme (FiT), which went live on 1st April 2010, is an environmental programme introduced by the UK Government to promote widespread uptake of a range of small and medium scale renewable electricity generation technologies.
This scheme can be highly lucrative for those owning suitable renewable energy systems. The FiT scheme has been set up with specific size bands for renewable developments, this gives higher tariffs for smaller projects which enables all renewable energy projects to have similar returns on investment. The relevant tariffs are used within this document for each calculation.
This tariff is paid by your electricity supply company for all units of electricity that are generated from your renewable project, even if you use all the units yourself. Any excess electricity can be exported to the grid for a further payment.
Once a generator has connected to the grid and registers for the FIT Scheme then that rate (which is inflated annually with the RPI: Retail Price Index) is guaranteed by the Government to be paid to you by your supply company for 20 years.
