CRCP — Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement

Roads for this generation and the next, CRCP is concrete pavement with continuous steelreinforcing bars throughout its length. Its design eliminates the need for transverse joints resulting in a continuous, smooth-riding surface.

• Stands up to heavy traffic loads • Minimizes maintenance• Long lasting• Stays smooth longer• Withstands harsh environmental conditions

Since its first use in 1973, epoxy-coated reinforcing bars havebecome the primary corrosion-protection system for manystate departments of trans-portation. The low initial costand documented performance ofepoxy-coated reinforcement has made it a sound value and a provencorrosion-protection strategy.

An excerpt from the report, “CorrosionProtection: Concrete Bridges”, from the Federal Highway Administration(FHWA), states:

“The preferred primary corrosion-protection system in many states hasbeen fusion-bonded epoxy-coated rebars(ECR), which have been used in ap-proximately 20,000 reinforced concretebridge decks. This rebar has performedvery well in alleviating the problem ofcorrosion-induced deterioration of con-crete bridge decks. It is estimated thatits use in the last 25 years has savedthe taxpayers billions of dollars so far.”

Since its inception over ten years ago,the voluntary Epoxy Coating Plant

Certification Program has grownto include over 33 plants in theU.S. and Canada, with five newmember plants coming aboardin the past year.

Interest in the voluntary programcontinues to grow because many

transportation agencies, including 19state and provincial agencies, will onlyuse epoxy-coated reinforcing bars pro-duced by CRSI Certified Plants. In addi-tion, the program has helped raise theproduct quality standard. This hasresulted in an improved product that isthe preferred choice to combat corro-sion of steel reinforcement. For a qualityproduct with a proven record of per-formance, use epoxy-coated steel rein-forcement from a CRSI Certified Plant.
