Thank You Ma’am

The character Roger in the story Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes was portrayed as tough and heartless.  He impacts the story and meaning by how he is a dynamic character meaning that the character changes either in a good or bad way. Roger undergoes a positive change through the story.

    One out of the two ways the character Roger is a dynamic character is by his actions throughout the story. In the beginning Roger tried stealing Mrs. Jones purse because he wanted a pair of blue suede shoes. When Mrs.Jones confronted roger he did not feel guilty about it. Her resented her for having enough and then some, but by the end of the story Roger knows what he did was wrong. He begins to consider how he frightened and angered Mrs. Jones—and how closely related those two emotions are.

    The second way Roger changes throughout the story is by his words. At first Roger is rude when Mrs. Jones confronts him about why he tried stealing her purse, but towards the middle of the story roger stopped acting rude towards Mrs. Jones and in the end when Mrs. Jones gives roger ten dollars to buy the pair of blue suede shoes he wanted to steal her purse to get hoping he had learned his lesson and sent him on his way. “The change in Roger has the readers wondering if he’s really learned his lesson or not.”

Roger’s changed his words and actions proving he was a dynamic character. Though it isn’t explicitly stated, I believe he changes the way he thinks. He is no longer the angry thief, thinking only of what he wants. Roger has learned his lesson about the difference between right and wrong.

Thank You M’am  In the beginning of “Thank You M’am” Roger wanted to steal money for some shoes. His actions change throughout the story from good to bad.

  Roger changed in two ways. One of the ways he changed was by his actions. He learned he needs to work for what he wants. He went from stealing the purse to work for his own money. I think he is too lazy to work so he just steals.

  Roger also changes by his words. At first he when he steals the purse he replies rudely instead of polite. He goes from disrespecting her to saying “Thank You M’am”.  I think the old lady taught him his lesson. I don’t think he was taught manners.

  Overall Roger changes his way from good to bad. He has learned his lesson, He learned to be polite which is great because I think everybody should have manners.
