1. Kirori Mal students held for ragging

NEW DELHI: In swift, exemplary action, police arrested two third-year BSc students of Kirori Mal College on Monday who had allegedly ragged a junior in a hostel room on Sunday night. The college authorities filed an FIR against its students Honey Mohammad of BSc physical sciences and Akshay Choudhary of BSc computer science for ragging a first year BSc student of physical sciences, Ashutosh, in room number 64 of the KMC's boys hostel.

According to DCP North Sagarpreet Hooda, ``We have registered a case and arrested the two students who were alleged to be involved in the incident. Further investigations are on.'' The cops will also record the statement of the victim.

College authorities said the victim was verbally abused and made to squat like a `murga' - a convoluted and painful posture used as a punishment. The case was registered on the complaint of the college authorities under section 294 (obscene acts and songs), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person) of Indian Penal Code at the Maurice Nagar Police Station. The two will be produced before the court on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the college proctoral committee after a two-hour meeting decided to expel the two students. The students had already been expelled from the hostel immediately after the ragging incident was reported to the warden, K A Singh, late on Sunday night.

Bhim Sen Singh, principal of the college, told TOI, ``We have decided to expel the two senior students from the hostel and college with immediate effect and have filed an FIR against them. It is unfortunate that despite so many awareness campaigns, we are still in the grip of this menace. We want to give exemplary punishment and hope the expulsions would act as a deterrent for other students.''

Interestingly, the college authorities have also decided to suspend another student who has so far not identified. The student is said to be responsible for sending the fresher to room number 64, where the alleged ragging took place. ``We have also decided to suspend another student who supposedly took part in the ragging. He is yet to be identified. But we hope after the investigation, we will be able to identify this person as well,'' Singh said.

Stating that the incident was an eye opener, Singh said that ragging seems to be rampant in various forms. ``The incident shattered my confidence that ragging didn't happen in my college. In fact, such ragging is rampant across institutions but the victims don't come forward to register complaints,'' said Singh.

2. Mishap fallout: No water still

NEW DELHI: It has been more than two weeks since an under-construction Metro line collapsed in Zamrudpur. But even now the DMRC has not yet been able to clear the area and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has not been able to undertake repairs on a main transmission line that was supplying water to nearby colonies. Areas like Dayanand Colony, Amar Colony and parts of Lajpat Nagar are either getting water supply for barely 10-15 minutes a day or simply not at all.

The situation in the affected areas is so bad that residents are now storing water from the colony park taps. In Dayanand Colony, where there has been no supply since July 12, when the accident took place, residents are either buying water from private tankers for Rs 800-1,000 or standing in line for hours at the park tap, filling water in buckets. "We are at the tail end of the system and have not got a drop of water since the accident. Earlier DJB was sending tankers but even those haven't come for the past five days. DJB tankers are also pointless for us since they do not have motors and we cannot pump water up to the tanks on the roof,'' said Ashok Gupta, a resident of Dayanand Colony's C-block.

A resident of Amar Colony, Vijender Gupta, is paying Rs 1,400 for a tanker right now, up from Rs 700 that was being charged initially. "DJB had started routing our supply through another pipe but that has meant that sometimes we don't get any water. The supply comes for barely 10-15 minutes and there is no fixed time for it either. My wife and I have been getting up at all odd hours, just to check if the water is coming. Officials are unable to tell us anything,'' said Gupta.

DJB officials said that the affected site had not been cleared by DMRC yet though they were supplying water to all areas from alternate sources. "Earlier we were told that the area would be cleared and handed over to us within a week. However, the debris has not been moved from above the pipe area and we have not been able to carry out repairs. We are expecting to get the area in another 4-5 days and our work should be complete in another couple of days," said an official.

Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, DMRC, said: "The girder that had fallen is very heavy and a lot of precaution is being taken while removing it. The work will take at least another four or five days.''

NEW DELHI: Addressing 100 students of Delhi University who were inducted as `Student Traffic Volunteers' in Delhi Police, Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Monday said soap operas on Indian television were projecting wrong attitudes. "Look at the serials in which family members are portrayed as those looking forward to damage the prospect of another. The characters are willing to crush, crumble others. What are they trying to promote... I don't think this is good. We should be living examples of Indian culture,'' Khanna said.

In view of Commonwealth Games, the traffic police have trained about 100 volunteers to assist officials in management of vehicles at key intersections in the city. While handing over I-cards to the volunteers, Khanna said: "The scheme will continue till the Commonwealth Games to help traffic policemen enforce rules better.'' It has been observed that violations come down to nearly one-sixth at intersections where volunteers are positioned. The program is being supported by Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) and Hyundai Motors India Ltd.

The volunteers are required to work for three hours a day, five days a week during peak hours for which each student will be given a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month. The traffic police has asked IRTE to call in all the volunteers who have been trained in the past years for the Games. "We have trained over 800 traffic volunteers so far. We are going to call them and use their services during the Games,'' said Rohit Baluja, president, IRTE.

4. Women to ride for free in DTC buses on Rakhi

There's good news for women residents of the city. On Wednesday, when the Delhi celebrates in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses. Delhi Metro is also making special arrangements for the Rakhi rush, so even if the tickets are not free here, the ride will be more comfortable.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit announced on Monday that women will travel free in DTC buses on Rakshabandhan. "To ensure that women reach their brothers' homes safely, they will be allowed free ride in all DTC ordinary buses and green low-floor buses till 5 PM on Wednesday,'' said an official.

Meanwhile, Delhi Metro will run 60 extra train trips on Rakshabandhan, and are deploying additional personnel to cater to the extra rush of commuters.

"Trains will be run at peak-hour frequency from 8 am to 8.30 pm on Wednesday and 19 trains which are normally withdrawn from the lines during off peak hours (12.30 pm to 04.30 pm) will be kept in service performing 60 extra trips making a total of 1,380 trips on that day,'' said a spokesperson.

At all the busy stations, where an additional rush of commuters is expected, more Customer Facilitation Agents are being called in to guide people. The extra manpower will be deployed at Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, Welcome, Seelampur, Shastri Park, Pitampura, Rohini East, Rohini West, Rithala, Jahangir Puri, Adarsh Nagar, GTB Nagar, Yamuna Bank, Uttam Nagar East, and Nawada, among others.

The ticket counters are also being spruced up with more manpower and adequate quantities of change. The DMRC ticketing staff at 40 stations has been instructed to do additional shifts of a total of 444 hours.

In the past years, Rakhi is a busy day on Delhi Metro has the train network sees an additional load of nearly one lakh commuters. In 2008, 7.75 lakh passengers travelled on Rakshabandhan by the Metro. At present, the Delhi Metro ridership has already increased substantially as the Metro carried 8,37,451 passengers per day in July 2009 which is the maximum ridership so far in any month.

5. Sheila wants discoms to pay fine for power cuts

NEW DELHI: It seems, more trouble is heading for Anil Ambani, who is embroiled in a tussle for natural gas with his brother. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has directed principal secretary (power) Rajendra Kumar to write to Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) asking for implementation of the clause to slap a fine on discoms for power cuts.

Dikshit informed the cabinet of the decision during Monday's meeting. It was unanimously welcomed by all ministers, said a source.

Power department sources say the move has been triggered by persistent reports of powercuts when there is no power shortage in the city. The commission has been asked to "investigate the attitude'' of discoms and impose "exemplary penalties'' for unexplained and long power cuts.

According to sources, the CM, however, did not clarify in the cabinet meeting what would be deemed as a "long power cut''.

The ministers are believed to have told the CM that the fact that some power cuts are not unavoidable has been proved conclusively several times as "names-dropping'' solves the problems. "It is common experience that if an influential person calls or approaches some senior discom official, the matter is resolved within no time. Hence, it is obvious that loadshedding is also happening when there are other options. This is not acceptable. Moreover, it is only areas under BSES which seem to have a perpetual problem, but NDPL areas are doing fine. This again raises the suspicion about the performance of the discom,'' said a source.

Meanwhile, DERC officials maintain that they have already initiated a probe into the issue of power crisis in June and what triggered the problem, hinting that penalising discoms for deficiency in services was definitely not ruled out. The power regulator has sought reports of all the transactions in power purchase and sale by all the three discoms during the crisis period to assess whether the crisis could have been avoided.

"Details of discoms' power transactions have been sought and sent to State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) for verification. Only after this, we will pass an order accordingly,'' said a senior official.

Initial investigation suggests that power was available and some discoms were not willing to bid high to procure power.

While the decision to penalise discoms may bring some relief to power-starved Delhiites, the powercuts are back since the rains have stopped once more and the temperature is on the rise.

This is not the first time that something of this nature has been discussed. Some time back, the state cabinet had proposed to slap a fine on discoms for unscheduled powercuts, and the money thus collected was to be handed over to the affected consumers. The proposal was welcomed unanimously, but it never saw the light of day, leaving Delhi at the mercy of discoms.

6. 2 held for burglary in judge's house

NEW DELHI: Two men were arrested for their alleged involvement in the burglary in a sessions court judge's house in Lodhi Colony area of south Delhi. The accused Gopal (25) and Ganpat (24) hail from Sikar and Ajmer in Rajasthan and were apprehended with stolen goods worth Rs 2 lakh, said the police.

"The duo was involved in the burglary in the residence of C K Chaturvedi, a sessions judge, on July 2 afternoon when he was not at home. They had ransacked his house and decamped with some jewellery, besides his medal and coins. They were involved in a number of burglary cases,'' said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal.

During investigations, it came to light that all the incidents were reported from Block No 23 of Lodhi Colony when the house owners were away. "The criminals had precise information about the movement of the house owners. The team in plain clothes laid traps in Block No 23 for several days which led to their arrests,'' an official said.

7. Suspected Hizbul terrorists sent to police custody till Aug 17

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Court on Friday remanded two suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, who were allegedly planning attacks in the national capital, to police custody till August 17.

In a brief hearing in the chamber, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja accepted the plea of Delhi police which had sought their custody for interrogationThe two-- Javed Ahmed Tantray and Ashiq Ali Bhat -- were arrested last night.

Police alleged that the militants are from Pakistan and had met the outfit's chief Syed Salahudin several times. They got arms training in Pakistan. They had first met Salahudin in PoK in 2003. In one of their recent meetings with the Hizbul leader, he asked the duo to carry out attacks against India.

8. Swine flu scare in IIT Delhi after student tests +ve

New Delhi: The swine flu scare has reached one of the premier technology institutes in the country. IIT Delhi has sanitised its hostel after a student staying there was diagnosed with swine flu.

Students say that there is no panic now and instead there is fear, especially after the death of a 14-year-old girl in Pune. They say they have taken to wearing protective masks after a student was diagnosed with the flu.

The authorities have also put up circulars informing the hostel students on timings of doctor visits for checking for swine flu as well as the precautionary measures to be taken to protect oneself against the illness.

The campus hospital will be used for preliminary check up and if the students show flu-like symptoms, they will be sent to the nearby Malviya Nagar Hospital.

9. BJP frames new party line: inclusive Hindutva

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday adopted a political resolution owning collective

responsibility for its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and insisting that its Hindutva ideology was inclusive.

"Hinduism or Hindutva is not to be understood or construed narrowly confined only to religious practices or

expressed in extreme forms," the resolution said.

"It is, therefore, inclusive representing the finest imprints of our cultural and civilisational ideas. This profound

concept is the real inspiration for a resurgent India with which the BJP is proud to be associated," it said.

Senior BJP leader L K Advani urged the party to follow a tolerant version of Hindutva while maintaining its

ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).

Advani told the concluding day of the BJP’s two-day national executive internal bickering had demoralised the

workers of the party--a hint at leaders who have been complaining against electoral strategy and want blame

for it fixed.

Advani told the closed-door meeting it is wrong to blame individuals for the party’s defeat--a defence of Aurn

Jaitley, who played a key role in forming electoral strategy and is now the Leader of the Opposition in the

Rajya Sabha.

Advani said the party has to “urgently evolve a system of encouraging younger leaders at all levels”.

"It is sad that a certain 'train compartment mentality' has got developed within the party, which makes those in

leadership positions to ignore promising, talented and committed cadres who are standing 'outside' and waiting

for the door to open," said Advani, 81.

"It is a matter of concern that our party seems to be plateau-ing in some states, which are our strongholds, and

have actually suffered big reversals in some others," he said.

Former BJP president Venkaiah Naidu, who briefed the media about the party’s meeting, said the party needed

to articulate its ideology better.

Naidu said the BJP would play a “constructive role” as the main Opposition and would “bounce” book.

“Defeat is fact of life--we will bounce back. Some people love the defeat of the BJP; we request them to go

through the facts--we are still strong,” he said.

10. One lab says Varun CD doctored, another says no

New Delhi: The investigation into the alleged hate speeches given by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi in his constituency Pilibhit has come out with two conflicting versions.

Sources in the Central Scientific Forensic Laboratory (CFSL) in Chandigarh have told CNN-IBN that a CD which contained Varun’s voice had been doctored.

Sources in the Chandigarh laboratory say the voice in the CD matches Varun’s but it could have been edited to join sentences and make it look like one continuous speech by the Pilibhit MP.

The Chandigarh laboratory’s opinion contradicts what a FSL laboratory in Lucknow has said. The Lucknow laboratory said videotapes showing Varun giving speeches were not doctored and it was Varun’s voice.

"The FSL report, which was received by police yesterday (Sunday), has confirmed that the voice in the tapes is that of Varun Gandhi and the CD is not doctored," said police officer Mani Ram Rao, who is investigating the complaints filed against Varun for his speeches at public meetings on March 7 and March 8.

Dr R S Varma, director of CFSL in Lucknow, refused to comment on his laboratory’s findings. “A CD on Varun Gandhi's speech was sent to us, which was examined here in CSFL. We have sent the report to UP police,” he said.

Varun’s mother, BJP leader Maneka Gandhi, on Sunday rejected the Lucknow laboratory’s report. “The entire tape is doctored, words have been interchanged… the forensic report is a one-sided version,” Maneka, MP from Aonla in Uttar Pradesh, told journalists on Sunday before her party’s national executive in Delhi.

Congress leader Manish Tewari though claimed the BJP cannot shirk responsibility for Varun’s speeches. “It’s not Varun Gandhi who alone is responsible. It is the responsibility of the entire BJP, which stood by him and thought that it could reap political dividends out of it,” said Tewari.

THE SMASHING HIT by Chetan Bhagat questions the Indian educational system.

Three months overdue on a customary visit to ‘University Books House’ at Kamla Nagar, I picked up this book from the shelf where it was being flaunted for over three on a friends advice. Half past midnight I turned to its pages to do something through my sleepless night with a thought to arouse a sleep. But trust me this 300 odd pages book was so gluing that I went on reading from page one to three hundred in one reading, sipping the fun down the throat. This is what everyone, to whom this book went in circulation, did.

This book featuring Hari, Ryan and Alok, is a smashing hit. The three meet at the premier engineering institute of India when they were dragged out of there beds at midnight with drowsy eyes by the seniors for a ragging session. This ragging session was the stepping stone of Jai and Veeru friendship. They take every major and minor jolt of life together.

This book is a mockery of Indian educational system which leaves no stone unturned in churning out muggers and not identifying the real talent; let it be the premier institute of India or some ABC institute situated at the far end of the Indian frontiers. Chetan Bhagat stakes a direct challenge to the mythical equation - Study= Pass and tries to draw a clear demarcation as to how much is one supposed to bury him / herself in books.

Challenging the well established norms of the Indian educational system he argues that just books and their company don’t really make a good student. The sub-title reads what not to do at IIT, but the main point of attraction is that if Bhagat doesn’t want people to do this, why he took the pain to write this 300 odd pages. As my conscience allows me to establish, he just wants to show how boring the college life can be if one doesn’t venture to add colours to it.

Other surprising fact is that other IITian girls didn’t find a mention in this book, but then these were mechanical (physically, mentally and metaphorically) students. Then of course operation pendulum (don’t ask me what is that, for that you need to read it) and Alok’s metaphoric suicidal leap from the institute roof adds to the miserable wastage of life, as we can see how Janakpuri district centre has become a hub for suicides. There are people who may hate this book and there are others who are going to be left bewildered and sorry. They will be left with a thought that there was a much colourful life outside waiting to embrace me and to kiss me when I was in the black and white company of books. Well it’s upon the personal perspective of the reader, which side influences him. But one thing is for sure that one you read one page, you will loose count of time and won’t leave the book before you read the last word.

RAB NE BANA DI JODI One often cribs about Yash Raj repeatedly casting SRK in similar roles, in film after film. However, this allegation is far from true. Right from DARR to CHAK DE INDIA, the combination has collaborated on varied subjects. With RAB NE BANA DI JODI, they take this association to another level altogether.

To start with, RAB NE BANA DI JODI brings back the golden team of DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE and MOHABBATEIN after a hiatus and the only parallel you can draw with the earlier achievements is the fact that each of them is a love story. Otherwise, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is truly different. It's not set in London or Switzerland, there's no sarso ke khet, it's not about a good looking couple sporting designer outfits and accessories, there's no parental opposition either.

Set your eyes anywhere and you see countless unknown faces. In markets, malls, streets, airports, stations, just about everywhere. And everyone who walks this planet has a story to tell. With RAB NE BANA DI JODI, Aditya Chopra talks of one such ordinary person. Living in one of those crowded bylanes of Amritsar, his life undergoes a 360 degree change the moment he sets his eyes on a beautiful girl.

Like SRK does a 360 degree turn in the movie, Aditya Chopra too does a complete turn as far as the story is concerned. Seeped in Indian emotions and traditional values and very desi at heart, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is a complete departure from the good-looking, picture perfect YRF movies that sport glam bodies parading designer outfits.

For the present-day generation, a story like RAB NE BANA DI JODI may come across as an original piece of work, but if you've been a keen observer of films of yore, you can't help overlook the similarities with Dr. V. Shantaram's NAVRANG and more precisely, Raj Kapoor's SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM. In fact, RAB NE BANA DI JODI also brings back memories of the low-cost MAIN MERI PATNI AUR WOH [Rajpal Yadav, Rituparna Sengupta], not in terms of story, but in terms of characters.

The problem is, RAB NE BANA DI JODI works in patches. The first 30 minutes and the penultimate 30 minutes are the highpoint of the enterprise, but the screenplay in between doesn't hold your attention. That's the truth!

In a nutshell, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE. It's not MOHABBATEIN either. At best, it's an average fare that may generate some curiosity initially, that's it. You expect much, much more, but? alas!

Surinder [Shah Rukh Khan], a simple, clean hearted, honest man working for Punjab Power, leads a humdrum life, but the moment he sets his eyes on Taani [Anushka Sharma], his life undergoes a change. She's flamboyant, fun-loving, vivacious, unlike Surinder. But unforeseen circumstances bring them together.

Director Aditya Chopra chooses a desi plot and weaves a story around an ordinary, middle class couple. The story begins with gusto and the initial scenes between Shah Rukh and Anushka are thoroughly interesting. But the screenplay falters the moment Shah Rukh's character Surinder transforms into Raj and his personality undergoes a sea-change. The first question that strikes you is, why didn't Anushka realize it's him, her husband, not someone else? Sure, he has undergone a complete makeover, but how can you not recognise your husband's voice or appearance? That's a glaring flaw, it's like taking the viewer for granted!

The sequences thereafter are equally uneven. A few sequences are well executed, but the problem is that Shah Rukh keeps playing the game till the very end. If he had to win her heart, he could've done so by making her realize that it's a mirage, making her realize that the person she loves and the person she's married are the same.

There's a twist in the tale only towards the pre-climax, when Anushka is ready to elope with Raj, her dance partner. The climax, the drama that ensues during the finale of the dance competition, is excellent. Even the end [the honeymoon in Japan] brings a smile on your face.

Director Aditya Chopra is letdown by his own writing. The story is not convincing, the screenplay is not water-tight and therefore, RAB NE BANA DI JODI does not create the impact it ought to make. Also, the film is quite lengthy. With a running time of approx. 2.45 hours, RAB NE BANA DI JODI could've easily done with some trimming. The unwanted flab could've been trimmed for a better impact.

Salim-Sulaiman's music is of a mixed variety. 'Haule Haule' is a superb composition and 'Dance Pe Chance' is foot-tapping, but the remaining tracks, though well shot, are plain average. Ravi Chandran's cinematography is top notch.

Shah Rukh is superb as the simpleton and your heart goes out to him every time he appears on screen. You want the underdog to win and here too, the way SRK tackles this part, you're all the more convinced. As Raj, SRK goes overboard at times. Anushka looks the character and surprises you with a confident performance. It's no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the calibre of SRK and Anushka manages it very well from start to end. Vinay Pathak is incredible. He contributes enormously in making the proceedings lively.

The wait is finally over! An Aamir Khan film is nothing short of an event. The supremely talented actor acts in one film a year and no two films are ever identical in terms of plotline. No wonder then that you await an Aamir starrer with bated breath.

GHAJINI, the Tamil version, has been a massive hit and so was its dubbed Telugu version. Will the Hindi adaptation live up to the humungous expectations? The hype is unmatched and you expect no less than a present-day masterpiece. Now the good news: GHAJINI demonstrates how strong film-making can enhance and elevate an already solid concept.

GHAJINI is a revenge saga, one ingredient that has been the staple diet of Hindi films since time immemorial. It is a powerful film. It has the power to sweep you off your feet from the word 'go'. It has a riveting story, which has been told with flourish by director A.R. Murugadoss. And, of course, it has a knockout performance by Aamir Khan. If at all there's a shred of doubt whether Aamir is The Best in the business, all you've got to do is check out GHAJINI.

Flaws any? Running time [almost 3 hours]? Not at all! There's so much happening in every scene and the screenplay is so gripping that you don't feel the need to look at the auditorium ceiling or at your watch at brief intervals. You aren't restless. As moviegoers, we've watched countless good versus evil fares over the years and although GHAJINI belongs to the same family, not once does it take the beaten track. The story has been told differently and most importantly, the story offers so many twists-n-turns that you just can't guess what would unfold next.

Is it violent? It is, at times, but the violence here is justified. In fact, every time the protagonist bashes up the evil-doers, you clap and root for him. The climax is jaw-dropping -- dissimilar from the original, but it's an out of the world experience nonetheless.

To sum up, GHAJINI is commercial Hindi cinema at its best. The film has 'Hit' written all over it. Let me put it this way: Cancel whatever you're doing today and go watch GHAJINI instead.

Aamir Khan is suffering from acute short-term memory loss set off by the violent murder of his girlfriend Asin. He's got to work around this handicap, but with methodical and meticulous determination. Aamir etches a path of clues that lead him on his road.

To aid him in his quest, he carries around a sheaf of Polaroids and when he is really sure of a piece of information, he has it tattooed on his body, which stands in for the damaged part of his mind. His indelibly marked torso is the repository of his grief, his rage and his reason to go on living.

Any more revelation would do gross injustice to the film and to its viewer. First things first! GHAJINI is not MEMENTO. There're minor similarities, but GHAJINI takes a completely different route to tell its story. Director A.R. Murugadoss tells this one differently. It starts off with what happens in the past, comes to the present-day, goes back in time again and returns to the contemporary again. This is a breathless, exciting story, heart-breaking and exhilarating at the same time.

Hindi movies have often depicted people suffering from amnesia/memory loss, but GHAJINI is poles apart because the protagonist recalls events only for 15 minutes. The story is its USP, without a doubt. But what adds sheen and glory to the story is Aamir's portrayal of a man suffering from short-term memory loss. Aamir hardly speaks. In fact, the leading lady [Asin] speaks more than Aamir in the film. But Aamir speaks volumes with his eyes, he conveys

whatever has to be conveyed through his body language, he says it all with his facial expressions and that only makes GHAJINI a memorable, never-seen-before experience.

Director A.R. Murugadoss deserves brownie points for not just coming up with an interesting story, but also presenting it [refreshingly] differently. The storyteller balances the light moments and the ones demanding intensity with expertise. There's dum in every sequence. Even if the director has to depict violence, he doesn't resort to blood-n-gore or knives-swords-pistols for effect.

A.R. Rahman's music is top notch. At least three numbers have the unmistakable stamp of a genius -- 'Guzarish', 'Behka' and 'Kaise Mujhe'. Ravi Chandran's cinematography is stunning. The film bears a stylish look all through. The action sequences are brilliantly executed. The Hindi moviegoers haven't seen such scenes ever.

Aamir delivers his career-best performance. In the first place, it requires courage and maturity to name the film after the villain. Knowing how egoistic our stars are, something like this is next to impossible in Hindi films.A lot has been said and written about the GHAJINI look -- Aamir's hairstyle and his dream physique. It's awe-inspiring and if more and more people adopt the 'Aamir look' or hit the gym, it would be courtesy the actor. As far as his acting is concerned, he's natural as the tycoon, but like a wounded, ferocious tiger when he goes on an avenging spree. Without doubt, it's a concentrated, layered performance. He acts with his entire being. His body movement, the details of his performance, everything rings true. He is both vulnerable and hard. The pain in his face when he can't remember, is palpable. It's not only the plot that carries GHAJINI. It's also the mood and the expression on Aamir's face that makes GHAJINI a treat.

Asin is fabulous. To share the screen space with an actor of the stature of Aamir Khan and yet remain in your memory even after the show has ended is no cakewalk. She looks fresh and photogenic and acts her part brilliantly. Pradeep Rawat, the villain, is first-rate. Jiah Khan impresses, especially in the sequence when Aamir follows her to a shopping mall.

On the whole, GHAJINI is a winner all the way. The film will set new records and has the merits to emerge one of the biggest Hits of all times. The weekend business should be historic, the Week 1 business should be unparalleled, the lifetime gross should be amongst the biggest of all times. In short, GHAJINI has 'Blockbuster' written all over it.

She is the show-stealer - the soul of the serial. Her character is named (Aanandi) who is a girl from a remote village, loves studying, intelligent, does her hubby’s homework, gives bangles to her widow-friend and gets punished for the same.   Director has done a marvelous job in exhibiting the transition of Aanandi from a chirpy girl to a disheartened soul. It has come out so beautifully and naturally that it leaves the viewers astounding.   …:::Story:::…Balika Vadhu, set in rural Rajasthan, narrates the story of child bride Aanandi. She is just 11 years old and married to Jagdish and lives with his parents (sasuma and bapusa), paternal uncle (tausa), sister (sugna) and grandmother (dadisa).   Aanandi’s mother-in-law is a very loving and doting mother. She loves Aanandi as her own daughter.   The villain in the story is dadisa. She plays the character of a lady who is orthodox and believes in old customs and traditions. She keeps harassing and scolding Aanandi as she expects her to act and behave like a grown up bride for her family.   …:::Rajasthani flavor:::…As colorful and vibrant Rajasthan is in the backdrop of this show, it aesthetically captures the essence of the state.

The background score is truly Rajasthani folk music which is neither too loud nor too laidback. Even the title track (choti si umar mein…) is perfectly aligned to Rajasthan.  The sets can’t be more magical and natural. They reflect pure Rajasthani flavor. The house of Aanandi’s in-laws is elegantly Rajasthani on the lines of thakurs. Aanandi’s own home captures remote Rajasthan’s enigma.  In fact, the language usage is also decided after completely researching on Rajasthan’s language. My mom was the first person to talk about this show in our home after word-of-the-mouth publicity in her kitty circle. I discarded the show straight away commenting that who is going to bear the preachy torture… To my surprise the show is completely opposite to what I thought. It is not a preachy show about child-marriage. It is full of entertainment as this fictional account focuses on entertaining the viewers. The show addresses the issue of child marriage but the tone and mood is not at all preachy.   …:::Footnotes:::…This very unique show is produced by Sphere Origins. 2. SAAT PHERE

One need not conduct a survey to assure oneself of the extent of popularity of this family oriented melodrama embellished with a colourful Rajasthani origin.From the very beginning,the serial was conceptualized with an indepth foresightedness that it exceedingly succeeded in leaving an indelible impression on the minds of its ardent viewer community.

            The director packaged his product with a variety of ingredients which are blended with such dexterity that it has been able to market itself independently.Not belonging to the contemporary generation of daily soap operas which are infested with intriguing plots and high intensity of negative emotions, Saat Phere came out as a stark contrast to the routine content which is meant for disillusioning the audience.

            Saat Phere is a delight to watch for those category of viewers who wish to seek entertainment out of the harsh realities of life being depicted in the storyline.Raj Shri Thakur aka Saloni Singh who has also been a model for Tanishq Jewellers is a household name for branding the image of an ideal Bahu but before marriage Saloni had to face humiliation not just at the hands of strangers but also her own near and dear ones, owing to her dark complexion.

            Her mother gets extremely worried for her marriage as she is being continuously rejected for being a dark beauty inspite of having a variety of significant attributes which are truly remarkable in their own ways.Saloni has a childhood friend Neel with whom she shares an extraordinary pleasant relationship.He is unconcerned about her dark skin and is extremely fond of her because of their emotional tie-up which has withstood the test of time.Saloni and Neel love each other but due to varied family status ,the family of Saloni outrightly reject the possibility of such a relationship.

Due to inability in getting their elder daughter married off to a respectable descent family,they are forced to plan for the marriage of their younger daughter who holds a grudge against her elder sister for being the most loving daughter of her father according to her childish perceptions.             Season of happiness arrives back for Saloni but ironically her own sister-in-law Kaveri harbours jealousy and contempt against Saloni and frames every possible strategy to trigger negativity into her life.Kaveri drives out the parents of Saloni from their legal ancestral house and tries to distance her husband from his own parents in which she manages to succeed.Saloni intervenes in the grim situation and Kaveri is ultimately exposed in her notorious moves against the family.Now it is Kaveri’s turn to face the music and is forced to leave the house by her furious and guilty husband who restores his parents back to their own home which was snatched away by their own daughter-in-law.

Since Saloni is unable to bear the miserable situation of the villainous Kaveri and brings her to her home.Kavera transforms herself into a sensitive,matured and responsible lady and regains trust of her inlaws and husband only to return back to her usual self which is a dreaded combination of hatred,jealousy and selfishness. Saloni, epitomising  an ideal bride is again found struggling against the split in her husband’s family fold due to the sudden appearance of a doublefaced hypocritical sister of Tara Bhabhi  who has poisoned Tara’s mindset strategically in order to sow the seeds of bitterness among the two families and has even married the husband of Tara to fulfill the undying wish of motherhood for Tara who is unable to conceive a child for her husband.Saloni n Nahar dissented such a development in the family but failed miserably to justify their apprehensions against the malicious intentions of the newly arrived female who is skillfully posing to be the wellwisher of her sister Tara.

Indian culture is rich and diverse and as a result unique in its very own way. Our manners, way of communicating with one another, etc are one of the important components of our culture therefore today we are here to discuss about the same. Mr. Gupta welcome to our show. Mr. Gupta, you have been an eminent proponent of Indian culture and tradition. What is India's greatest contribution to the world?

Mr. Gupta- I think the Vedantic concepts—the notion of an all-pervasive Brahman, the atman that resides in all beings and the methodology of joining this atman to the Brahman, which is broadly known as yoga. The belief in spiritual quest and primacy of consciousness are deeply embedded in the texture of Indian civilization. This does contribute to the special spiritual dimension that India has given to the world. Anchor- Do you perceive a shift in consciousness, be it India or the world?

Mr. Gupta- Think two things are happening at the same time. On one hand, there is a tremendous thrust towards materialism. There is an avalanche of violence and negative values in our movies and television. On the other hand, there is a growing section of people who are turning towards spirituality. I have been to several countries and I can see the change. It is a double shift.

Anchor- But which is a stronger trend?

Mr. Gupta: That remains to be seen. If you look at the history of human race, both negative and positive elements have run parallel. There has never been a time when either has totally dominated the other. Trying to predict the outcome is futile. Instead, we should contribute to the world in whatever way we can. I travel around the world speaking on Vedanta, education, environment, global consciousness—on 'Life Positive' in fact. Our tradition is life affirming. Anchor- How would you define the meaning of life? Mr. Gupta- The meaning of life is to reflect the divine within one's consciousness. According to the Rig Veda, we should work for the liberation of our souls as well as for the welfare of the society. I try to do both to the best of my capability.

Anchor- Thank you sir for enlightening us,and well Iwill also like to add on some thing about culture that its like a flowing river thus should not be checked as stagnant water becomes stale so is the case with culture. stagnant or restricted culture or civilization can never progress therefore we must be ready to accept changes which are for the development and betterment of ones culture. 1. Sonia Gandhi, PM inaugurate IGI Airport’s Terminal 3

3 july 2010 , New Delhi, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday inaugurated the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s newly structured Terminal 3. With this, IGI Airport becomes India’s largest and the 5th largest International airport of the world.

The new terminal building can cater up to 34 million passengers annually and has 95 immigration counters. It also promises to redefine air travel in India and boasts of in-line baggage handling system with capacity to handle 12,800 bags per hour.There are six common check-in islands with 168 check-in counters and 78 passenger boarding bridges.

Expressing her delight on being present there at the inauguration ceremony, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that the Terminal 3 is the most impressive structure and it is evident that global standards of excellence have been achieved here.  “Over the last decade there has been a rapid progress in the Infrastructure of the country. If Dams and steel plants were the temples of modern India in Jawahar lal Nehru’s times, today’s iconic edifices are surely our highways, seas, airports and telecom facilities” She said mentioning about India’s infrastructural jump.

She said that these structures are not only evidences of rapid economic progress and modernization but also have an important multiplier effect on economic activity.Putting  Delhi Metro and new terminal 3 airport as examples ,Sonia Gandhi said that such successes reaffirm our belief of not only being good enough but also make us feel that we can compete with the best in the world provided we put our collective minds, skills and passions together.Laying stress on quality work, Sonia Gandhi said that quality should not be reserved only for prestigious projects but it should become part and parcel of our planning and design processes for all our public projects including housing, schools, hospitals and other services.

Talking about the approaching Commonwealth Games, she said “Great demands will be placed not just on the airport but also on the facilities of the city, its administration and its people. The government has seized the opportunity to transform the capital’s infrastructure and with Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit showing the way, I hope other cities, big or small, will also redouble their efforts in improving the quality of life for the citizens.” Sonia Gandhi concluded her speech saying that she sincerely congratulates the Airport Authority, GMR group, all the engineers, technicians, designers, artists and workers involved who have toiled tirelessly for the successful accomplishment of the project in a record time of 37 months.

Besides UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit were among the dignitaries present on the occasion to dedicate T3 built by GMR group backed developer Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).Spread over 4 kms, 80 per cent of T3 is made of glass and supported by metal frames. The nine level terminal building would be used for 90 per cent of the entire passenger movement in the airport. Comfortable lounges, nap and shower rooms will add to passenger comfort in the airport which will have a mix of restaurants, bars, cafes and fast food outlets in around 20,000 sq mt of commercial space.

Gadkari’s appointment as BJP president hailedNew Delhi, December 21Sh. Amit Thaker, the national president, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha has hailed the appointment of Sh. Nitin Gadkari as National President of Bharatiya Janata Party. Hailing the appointment, Thaker said that Gadkari has made mark in the political arena. “Gadkari’s USP is his development based politics that includes sewa and vikas. The service and development has remained core of his political career. Such works have paved way for better public service and expanded the party popularity amongst masses giving it a wider base,” he said.

Thaker appreciated Gadkari for being associated with grass level movement of the party. He added that the concepts of PPP public private partnership and BOT built operate and transfers are Gadkari’s brainchild, which have now been replicated all over the country inmost of the public utility construction avenues.

“The Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai, which has made many social thinkers an apostle of the technology involved in project, too is Gadkari’s initiative. He is a true leader not only in terms of mass following but also has an in-depth knowledge of administration andeffective use of technology for public benefit,” Thaker said.

Emphasizing Gadkari’s main contribution in the form of his pilot project, “what after 12th”, Thaker said that this apolitical project has largely helped youth to decide its career direction after completing senior secondary class. Camps held under this project have acted as great career counselors for students and more than 5000 students have already been benefited through a series of these camps.

He added that it matter of great pride that an office bearer of youth wing has become the national president of BJP. “Gadkari’s elevation as president has once again proven that there is no place for dynastic politics in BJP. Any Indian who joins BJP and works hard can reach the top as did Mr Gadkari and prior to him people like Sh. Rajnath Singh and Sh. Vankaya Naidu have arose in same way,” he added.
