Territorial and Production Systems Sustainability Department

ENEA makes available a technology for the production of an innovative high quality organic fertilizer from poultry dejection (manure). It is a product rich in organic matter, with macro- and micro-nutrients and with slow-release nitrogen component. The technology is patented by Amek scrl in Italy (Patent EP1314710 “A process of maturing and stabilizing biomasses under reduction of smelling emissions”). It is a technology easy to use, applicable under various climatic conditions and to any agricultural reality, also in Developing Countries.

Benefits and Advantages:

• Partial replacement of chemical fertilizers with natural products• improved sanitary conditions • reduction of salinity, environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) • upkeep of soil fertility and quality improvement in crop production• increase in soil water retention, and consequent water and energy saving

ENEA Service:

ENEA collaborated in the European FERPODE Project (https://ec.europa.eu/environment/eco-innovation/projects/en/projects/ferpode) co-funded by European Commission in the framework of the CIP-Ecoinnovation 2008 project, with the goal of putting on the market “a new high quality organic fertilizer obtained by the use of poultry dejection”. ENEA provided technical support for the design and management of pilot plants, and developed specialized analysis methods to assess the maturation degree and the quality of the organic fertilizer. The application was tested in intensive poultry farms, with the use of manure storage areas as treatment site, in collaboration with: AMEK; Cooperativa trasporti di Imola; Arpa–Emilia Romagna; Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia ed Emilia-Romagna; Universiy of Bologna - Veterinary Medical Sciences Department.

Keywords:

organic fertilizer, slow release nitrogen, soil fertility, combat desertification, water saving in agriculture, recycling, enzymatic treatment, simplified treatment, energy saving, poultry manure, poultry dejection, fowl manure, circular economy, sustainability, training

• set up of fertilizer production method• technical support and consulting • training of skilled technicians for fertilizer production and use
