Their applications include wastewater treatment, air purification, removal of contaminants and many others. In this study, a number of different agricultural and forestry residues have been investigated as precursors for the production of activated carbons subsequently tested for the removal of typical pollutants. A novel lab scale microreactor with outstanding mixing and heat transfer characteristics has been developed and used for this study for the screening of the impact of pyrolysis conditions (ranging from fast to slow pyrolysis) and of activation on the final product properties. Among the residual biomasses tested, optimal feedstocks, pyrolysis and activation conditions have been identified. Activated carbons derived from the two best materials have been used for removal of contaminants, such as naphthenic acids from oil sands tailings, and ammonia and mercury from wastewaters, and proven to exceed the performance of commercial activated carbons. In addition, the presentation will describe our different reactor technologies, ranging from our laboratory scale (1 to 10 kg/h) fluidized beds and mechanically fluidized reactors to the larger (2.5 tons per day) mechanically fluidized reactor mobile pyrolyzer (illustrated below). The presentation will finally include a general overview of the research and development activities carried out at the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR).
