DFM effort is to modify the existingproducts (and/or its components) design
or have a new product designed.
It processes to manufacture the same areeasier quicker and/or less expensive.

Reducing the manufacturing time is amajor consideration.
This, of course, has to be achievedwithout compromising on quality.
It was Eli Whitney, who developed asystem of DFM 200 years ago formanufacturing muskets.

A product must perform the function whichits customer expects it to do. If a product isdesigned by taking its functional features
into account, then it will create satisfiedcustomers.

A product design that solves the functionalproblem smoothly, then attention must begiven to materials, fastening devices etc.,
While designing a product . Also, operational convenience of themachineries must be taken into account at
the design stage.
Design for Making

A product that functions well and is easy tomake, but is wanted by no one is of noavail. The features like, appearance and
convenience, depending on thecustomers, needs are to be considered.

Product designers believe that their job isover once they release their drawings.Manufacturing engineers then struggle to
produce the product that is dumped intotheir laps. At their best, design and
development people have been more
concerned with how a particular featurerequested by marketing may be translatedinto a physical parameter.

Functionality:
- What purpose that product serve?
- Some products has excellent use, butlost customer appeal due to poor design.

Esthetic/ Visual appeal:
- Purchase design is mostly based onvisual appeal.
- Many poor functioning products havebeen sold largely due to their strong visualappeal.
- Design consideration need to be givenimportance to esthetic/ visual appeal.

Safety Standards:
- Product safety is important whenreviewing design.
- Use of materials that are non toxic, non-damageble to environment.

Ease to use:
- Designing must ensure that easy to use.
- Simplicity makes the thing easy.

Product performance:
- During designing process productperformance must be considered.
- Performance here is defined as how longa product lasts in its use, ensuringcomponent does not break.

DFDdesign for disassembly; take backlaw
Product should make no use of
environmental damaging substances.
Design facilitates manufacture of productswith little use of natural resources like
water and energy.
The design is such that the productdoesnt end up soon.

Design in such a way that the non-reusable and recyclable are used.
Durable it can be repaired and reused..
Products that can be disposed of safely.
