Why are they named Zephyr?–

zeph•yr

(zĕf′ər) is defined as:•

Breeze•

Gentle wind•

Air•

Greek mythology: the Greek god of the west wind

Honeywell’s goal was to derive a name that conveyed a smooth, sensitive, uninterrupted flow of air

This sensor’s high accuracy—

particularly its null accuracy and sensitivity at low flows—combined with its low pressure drop make “Zephyr” a fitting name

The Zephyr Name

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You may wonder why Honeywell named these digital airflow sensors “Zephyr.” Honeywell wanted to convey the fact that they give an accurate signal with very smooth, laminar flow and a sensitive reading for even the smallest flow ranges.

Background

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Honeywell Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors are mass airflow sensors. They are used to determine the flow of air and other non-corrosive gases. The sensors are available in standard flow ranges. They are fully temperature calibrated and compensated with an onboard application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). These sensors provide a digital interface for high resolution and ease of integration to the application microprocessor. These sensors use a thermally isolated heater and temperature sensing element that Honeywell pioneered.

Meet high accuracy specifications–

High 2.5% accuracy allows for a very precise airflow measurement, often ideal for demanding applications with high accuracy requirements

Customizable–

Allows the sensor to be designed to meet specific end-user needs

High sensitivity at very low flows–

Allows the application the ability to detect presence or absence

of airflow

High stability–

Reduces errors due to thermal effects and null shift to provide accurate readings over time, often eliminating need for system calibration after printed circuit board (PCB) mount and periodically over time

Low pressure drop–

Typically improves patient comfort in medical applications, and reduces noise and system wear in components such as motors and pumps

Saves design engineers time and money–

Linear output provides a more intuitive sensor signal than the raw output of basic airflow sensors, often eliminating the need to linearize the output, which can help to reduce production/design costs and implementation time

Competitive Differentiators

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Accuracy: Honeywell Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors meet a very high ±2.5% accuracy rating, which is industry leading. Customizable: The ASIC-based design allows these sensors to be customized. Honeywell can calibrate the sensor to meet specific customer needs. High sensitivity at low flows: These are highly sensitive devices, allowing them to detect the presence or absence of airflow at very low flows. Stability: These sensors have been designed with high stability so that they reduce errors due to thermal effects and the effects of time on the sensor to limit any null or span shifts. Low pressure drop: A very low pressure drop is important in medical and industrial applications to allow the system to operate at its lowest possible flow rate. It also reduces the noise and wear on other components of the system. Saves design engineers time and money: Honeywell Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors offer a linear output, making them easy to integrate, often reducing the customers’ production costs and integration time because they don’t have to linearize the output on their own.

(in addition to competitive differentiators)1.

Small–

Occupies less space on the PCB, allowing for an easier fit and potentially reducing production costs

PCB size may also be reduced, easing fit in space-constrained applications 2.

Flexible–

Low 3.3 Vdc voltage option and low power supply allow for battery-driven and other portable applications

3.

Full calibration and temperature compensation–

Typically allows customers to remove additional signal conditioning components from the PCB, reducing PCB size and costs often associated with those components (e.g., acquisition, inventory, assembly)

4.

Fast response time –

Allows a customer's application to respond quickly to airflow change, important in medical (i.e., anesthesia) and industrial (i.e., fume hood) applications

5.

High 12-bit resolution–

Increases the ability to sense small airflow changes, allowing customers to more precisely control their application

Features and Benefits

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Features and Benefits Small: These sensors are quite small. These building blocks can be over-packaged into higher flow rate sensors. Flexible: These sensors are very flexible. Honeywell offers a 3.3 volt in addition to a 5 volt to allow use in battery driven and portable applications. In addition, there are multiple mounting and porting options available, as previously discussed. Fully calibrated and temperature compensated: These devices are fully calibrated and temperature compensated that allows customers to remove additional signal conditioning elements from the PCB that they would have to use if they were doing their own temperature calibration and compensation. Fast response time: These sensors have a fast 1 ms response time that allows the customers’ application to quickly respond to airflow changes, important in medical and industrial applications. High 12-bit resolution: These sensors’ high 12-bit resolution allows customers the ability to sense even very small airflow changes and to resolve very small differences in airflow.

6.

Bidirectional flow sensing capability–

Eliminates the need for two airflow sensors, helping customers reduce production costs and implementation time

7.

Insensitivity to mounting orientation–

Allows customers to position the sensor in the most optimal point in the system, eliminating concern for positional effects

8.

Insensitivity to altitude –

Eliminates customer-implemented altitude adjustments in the system, easing integration and reducing production costs by not having to purchase additional sensors for altitude adjustments

9.

RoHS-compliant materials –

Meets Directive 2002/95/EC

Features and Benefits (continued)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Bidirectional flow sensing capability: These sensors offer bidirectional flow sensing capabilities that eliminate the need to have two sensors to detect airflow in both directions, helping to reduce space, production costs and implementation size. Insensitivity to mounting orientation: These devices are insensitive to mounting orientation and altitude, important for applications where one has to mount the sensor in a space-constrained area, or at high elevations. RoHS compliant: These sensors are RoHS compliant.
