Benefits of using Shelters

In 1978 the first treeshelters were conceived and trialed by Graham Tuley of the UK Forestry Commission. Since then, TUBEX have been researching and refining the range to offer increased benefits and establishment safeguards as identified through their many trials.

Faster establishment - this was first researched with theForestry Commission in 1991, and can be attributed to themicroclimate that is created inside treeshelters.

Protection against animals and herbicides- individual protection allows flexibility in site maintenance. Treeshelters permit animal grazing and use of herbicides.

Healthy root growth - a healthy root system is essential to the establishment of trees. Studies have been undertaken in France and Germany on the development of root systems in treeshelters, conclusions show that healthy roots have been established in trees planted with treeshelters.

Cost savings - the largest potential cost when planting a tree is the reduced return on investment from badly formed crop, or the total loss of investment due to crop failure. Planting with TUBEX shelters increases survival rates, giving you confidence to plant smaller cheaper trees. Smaller trees are easier to transport and also may be planted at lower stocking densities. Visual benefits - these benefits have never been studied buthave been identified from users of treeshelters; Fewer side shoots as the microclimate encourages vertical growth (apical dominance), easy tree identification in a dense woodland, and visual impact as the mesh range blend subtly into the natural environment.

Better survival rates - individual tree protection allows the tree to establish whilst reducing stress on the tree. Many studies have been done on tree survival; the graph below shows % of oak trees lost due to vole damage in research led by B. Leder and U. Hancke, Germany.

Since 2006 TUBEX have embarked on a quest to find a material which retains the functionality of our standard range and yet isderived, at least partially, from sustainable sources which willdegrade more ‘completely’ at the end of their lifespan.

TUBEX 12D is a new material technology combining biopolymerand an oxo-degradable polypropylene.

Degradation time frame The time frame in which the product will degradewill always be dependent on the environment it is in.Many factors contribute to this process, with theimportant ones being sunlight and bacteria.Sunlight is needed to break up the polymerchains whilst bacteria is needed to digestthese small chains.

In a northern European environment we would expectwith a 5Y product, around 4-6 years of service life,with around a further 5 years of degradation.

Whilst our traditional treeshelters are made from polypropylene, photodegrading from UV radiation; our new TUBEX 12D material contains a biopolymer and a catalyst which accelerates degradation and reduces the reliance on UV degrading the material.The name 12D demonstrates customers receive all the benefits of a traditional shelter with the added benefit of degradation.Our customers will still enjoy the same ease of installation of TUBEX, their trees will receive the same high level of protection and support, and 12D gives the added value of degrading intofine particles which may not require recovery at the end oftheir useful life.

TUBEX Combitube is designed to last a minimum of 5 years*, boosting the chances of survival and healthy growth through the early stages of the tree’s life. Ventilation is provided by a number of 4mm punch perforations in a set of 100mm deep bands at the top of the shelter, allowing for ‘wind rock’ to strengthen both root and stem as well as hardening the bark of the tree. 45cm of solid base allows chemical spraying and creates the microclimate, whilst the perforations ventilate the tree and are small enough for the branches not to grow through.

TUBEX Shelterguard is designed to last a minimum of 7 years*, boosting the chances of survival and healthy growth through the early stages of the tree’s life. TUBEX Shelterguard is unique as it is designed to gain the benefits of enhanced growth through the microclimate of a treeshelter, but also allows the tree to acclimatise to the outside environment through its two-staged degradation process.

Welded to the 12mm square mesh is a very fine polythene film which starts to degrade after approx. 3 growing seasons, gradually exposing the tree to the outside environment allowing ‘wind rock’ to strengthen both root and stem as well as hardening the bark of the tree.

Ancorfix is a rubber tie for staking or securing. It is suitable for many applications as it is strong, has high elasticity allowing the tie to expand, and lasts up to 2 years. Benefits of using Vineshelters

Having experienced success in the forestry market with shelters, fruit and viticulture sectors soon adopted the TUBEX vineshelters technology and reported similar benefits. Much research has been done into the benefits of using vineshelters with independent trial sites set up in many different countries.

Growth - Attributable to the microclimate, TUBEX vineshelters provide accelerated, healthy and balanced growth with a balanced root-shoot ratio.

Uniform growth – TUBEX vineshelters provide uniform growth throughout a plantation, making pruning, training andmaintenance more efficient.

Crop a year earlier – Due to the microclimate created inside the TUBEX vineshelter, vineyard owners are sometimes able to harvest crop earlier. This has been investigated by Graham Due (1996) in Australia where his studies found that good soil preparation and the use of vineshelters allowed some vineyard owners to harvest after just 18 months using TUBEX guards!

Survival – Replacing failed crops is costly, so survival is vital when considering the profitability of a plantation. TUBEXvineshelters reduce stress on the plant; providing protection against weeds, minimising irrigation requirements throughincreased water vapour inside the vineshelter and providing an optimum growing environment through the early stages of the plant’s life.

TUBEX Plantation is a flat-packed vineshelter made from the same inert polypropylene as our other TUBEX products. Flat-packed means that the product can be stored and transported economically because it takes up less space, so more can be carried by hand or vehicle at any time.A little more time is required to open and install the vineshelter correctly, but if done with care TUBEX Plantation offers the same protectionagainst herbicide, mechanical weeding processes and animal browsing.

A unique product, the TUBEX Shelterguard is designed to gain thebenefits of enhanced growth through the microclimate, but alsoallows the plant to acclimatise to the outside environment throughits two-staged degradation process.Welded to the 12mm square mesh is a very fine polythene film which starts to degrade after approx. 3 growing seasons, gradually exposing the plant to the outside environment allowing the bark to harden.

The TUBEX Fruitwrap is a twin-walled tube that has been split vertically, enabling it to wrap around a fruit tree and expand as the plant grows.With optimum light transmission, the Fruitwrap enhances growth whilst protecting against animal browsing, herbicide sprays and accidental damage during mechanical weeding. Ideally suited for slender plants that have a dominant single stem, where the tube can simply be dropped over the tree and supported with a sturdy cane.

Note: Although Fruitwrap is suitable for fruit trees in temperateclimates, we recommend that in very hot climates a larger diameter product such as Vine Original is used, especially for stone fruits.

TUBEX Barkwrap is a single wall, rigid brown tube that has been split vertically, enabling it to wrap around a fruit tree and expand as the plant grows. Ideally suited for more established trees where the bark has hardened off, as the TUBEX Barkwrap does not transmit light.


Our cost effective solution to bark protection, the TUBEX Barkwrap protects trees that would normallybe damaged from mechanical weeding.

In the USA the application of treeshelters in riparian planting zonesis proven to accelerate the beneficial effects of planting trees toreduce nitrate run-off and subsequent algaebloom in water ways. Sales increaserapidly as a result.

TUBEX creates the manufacturing process enablingcommercialisation of the first tubular polypropylenetreeshelter.

Boddingtons Group purchase Acorn and, by improved efficiencies and energetic sales activity, almost double turnover within the space of two seasons.

TUBEX refine shelter specification reducing life-span from15 years to 5-7 years and introduce the laserline splittingtechnology, reflecting customer requirements.

In January Boddingtons Group are purchased by FiberwebGeosynthetics, who in May also purchase TUBEX, bringing togetherthe two most popular shelter technologiescurrently manufactured.

TUBEX expand into Europe and further afield, taking treesheltertechnology into a number of countries,most notably Spain,Germany and USA.

In November Fiberweb PLC was acquired byPolymer Group Inc.

In September Polymer Group Inc. incorporaing TUBEX was acquired by Berry Plastics inc.

Acorn drop the Gro-Cone range in favour of Treeguard andShelterguard offering unique, dual-degradation technology.

TUBEX comprises of the most comprehensive and wide ranging plant protection portfolio currently available anywhere in the world and continues to be market leaderthrough innovation.

TUBEX start work on the ‘next generation of treeshelter’, allocating resources in the quest to find alternative manufacturing materials and improved control over degradation, settingup trial sites both in the UK and Germany.
