Classification of adhesives for ceramic tiles and natural stones

Strength classificationThe characteristics of tile adhesives are defined in Standard EN 12004. Since April 2004 it is no longer allowed to sell and use a tile adhesive in Europe that has not been tested according to this standard and the demands for CE-marking. Characteristics applicable must be mentioned on every packaging.

SpecificationsThree different types of adhesives are determined: cementitious- “C”, dispersion- “D” and Reaction Resin “R” adhesives. For every type fundamental- and optional characteristics are described.

Cement based adhesivesA cement based adhesive that only fulfils the fundamental characteristics is classified as a C1 adhesive. Minimum requirements of adhesion strength results must be ≥ 0.5 N/mm². The fundamental tests involve:

F (fast setting) early tensile adhesion strength of ≥ 0.5 N/mm² after 6 hours.T (Tixotropic) slip test; slip of test tile must be ≤ 0.5 mm. E (extended open time); tensile adhesion strength after at least30minutesopentimeand28daysstorage.

Ready-mixed adhesivesA ready-mixed dispersion based adhesive must fulfil the legal European basic requirements. Higher demandsForbo Eurocol believes in order to meet the requirements stated in the standard, laboratory test results are sometimes not adequate in practise. On the job, circumstances can have a negative influence on the adhesion of the adhesive. For this purpose we choose to test our products under extreme circumstances and to aim at development criteria far above the standard requirements.
