Welcome to our 08-09 edition Product & Solutions Guide. We’ve included no fewer than 600 new

products in this catalogue and added new features such as the fold out selection pages and

alphanumeric product listings making it easier to find what you are looking for. With 39 different

conduit systems available to choose from, you can be assured that we have a system to meet

your needs.

Flexicon continue to operate as an independently owned family business, manufacturing cable

management products in the UK for a wide range of markets including the Construction Industry,

Rail, Marine, MOD, and Machinery & OEM’s to name but a few.

The last eight years has seen major growth for us both at home and overseas. However one

thing that remains constant is our commitment to continually develop products that are easy to

use and widely available through our extensive network of selected distributors, agents and

stockists.

We continue to invest in our Birmingham manufacturing base and the recent acquisition of the

neighbouring office/ factory units has enabled us to double our production space. You will have

General Contracting

Project lead-times are becoming shorter with clients looking to achieve faster return on investments.

Take retail for example; whilst the building is in the construction phase the store cannot trade and is

therefore not generating turnover. By using products that are quick and easy to install Contractors can

reduce construction lead-times and move on to the next project.

Systems need inherent flexibility to enable adaptations to be incorporated with ease, minimising

potential client disruption during upgrades. With increased emphasis on whole life costs consideration

to maintenance schedules and future proofing becomes more important.

Safety is of paramount importance when specifying products used in public buildings. Material

characteristics and fire performance properties should be carefully considered as well as IP rating,

vandal proofing, UV stability and EMC screening. Take a Hospital application for example; the protection

of data cabling and guaranteeing of electro-magnetic compatibility may be a matter of life and death.

Defence

Flexicon offer a range of solutions suitable for the demanding applications in the defence sectors. This

sector demands that critical systems are protected to be totally reliable within the severest of environments.

All of these high standards have been met and surpassed by Flexicon conduit systems.

With products specifically suited to meet the strictest standards for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC),

systems can provide protection from stray interference for essential plant and equipment.

Shock, vibration and impact protection is paramount within critical cabling systems found on defence

applications. Flexicon products have been designed, tested, installed and proven to meet these stringent

requirements.

With the increasing emphasis on health and safety in all aspects of MOD contracting, specifiers can be

assured of the performance of systems in relation to fire safety and blast resistance.

Flexicon offer a wide range of swivel UNEF type fittings, which allow the assembly of military style

connectors without any cable twisting. ‘Long Pattern’ connectors can be supplied to eliminate the

Data Cabling Market

A correctly specified and installed cable management system ensures that

a structured cabling system performs at its best.

Containment is one of the most critical aspects of data cabling, and has a

significant effect on the performance of a structured cabling system. As

more demanding applications – such as 10 Gigabit to the desktop, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP),

streaming video and CCTV over twisted pair (CCTP) – emerge, the correct selection of cable management

With 21 different metal conduit systems to chose from there is sure

to be a system to meet your application. Choose from conduit

systems ranging from 10mm to 75mm in size, manufactured in

galvanised steel or stainless steel and with or without a range of

coverings/over braiding.

Metallic conduit systems can offer higher compression strength

and pull off strength characteristics than non-metallic. They are

also suitable where there are wide temperature tolerances and can

provide IP ratings from IP40 up to IP68. Metallic systems also

provide a high level of impact resistance.

To provide superior protection and immunity from electromagnetic

interference, as well as increased mechanical abrasion resistance,

With 18 different non metallic conduit systems to chose from there is sure to be a system

to meet your application. Available in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 10mm up to

106mm and manufactured from a range of materials offering different properties.

Non-metallic conduit systems offer a lighter weight and corrosion resistant alternative to

metallic systems. The product is typically easier to work with than metallic systems and

is highly flexible. If subjected to an impact nylon conduit will return to its original shape

due to the memory flex properties of the materials used. With IP ratings up to IP69K,

more innovation is possible with nylon injection moulded fittings.

Fittings are available with brass threads when used in heavier duty applications or where

OEM design requires a metal to metal thread.

To provide superior protection and immunity from electromagnetic interference, as well

as increased mechanical abrasion resistance, Flexicon has introduced a range of over

braided Flexible non-metallic Conduit systems that will meet your requirements and can

be found on pages 36 and 37.

The variety of colours and materials available lend themselves to more applications, with

Contractor packs offering a simple handy solution on small installations.

Standards, performance and approvals

Flexicon conduits and fittings are manufactured by Flexicon to comply with the European conduit standard IEC EN 61386.

Certain tests are carried out internally by Flexicon, other testing is carried outexternally by accredited test laboratories. Specific test reports are available uponrequest.

Where product performance data over and above the requirements of IEC EN 61386 is provided e.g: Low Fire Hazard testing and EMC screening,other appropriate standards have been used.

Cable glands are manufactured to EN 50262.

Push button timers are manufactured to EN 60730-2-7.

Cutting and Assembly Guidance

All non-metallic conduits and FLP up to 34mm can be easily cut with Flexiconcutters, part no. CC01. Use CC02 for sizes up to 67mm.

Metallic conduits should be cut with a fine tooth (32 TPI) hacksaw or bandsaw.Our clamping vice, part no. BSB makes the use of a hacksaw much easier.

Cutting of overbraided conduit is made much easier by wrapping self adhesivetape around the conduit and sawing through the middle of the tape. The tapeshould be removed if EMC screening is required.

Flexicon can supply bench mounted bandsaws designed to cut metallic conduiteasily.

To obtain EMC screening on pliable FLPconduit, the PVC sheath must be trimmedback prior to assembly.

Metal fittings should be nipped with grips or spanner to ensure securing and IP rating.

Face sealing washers may be required to maintain IP rating between systems.

The easiest way of installing cables into flexible and pliable conduit is tosimultaneously draw in the cables with the conduit in straight condition beforeinstallation.

UK wiring regulations BS7671 prohibit the use of flexible or pliableconduit as an earthing conductor.

Where conduits of 40mm and above penetrate fire barriers inbuildings the wiring regulations stipulate that internal seals shouldbe used to maintain fire resistance.

To meet the UK wiring regulations conduit should be selfextinguishing unless they are to be buried or contained in noncombustible material e.g: concrete or plaster.

Public buildings, retail outlets, high rise office blocks, hospitals andtransport installations - these are just a few of the instances where LowFire Hazard products may be demanded.

Low Fire Hazard systems are required to protect personnel and property inthe event of a fire and may be demanded by specifiers, occupiers, fireservices or even insurers.

At Flexicon we define a Low Fire Hazard product by having all of thefollowing properties:

Highly flame retardant to prevent a fire or limit its developmentif one does start.

Low smoke emission in the event of a fire to enable personnel to seetheir way to escape.

Low toxicity in the event of a fire to ensure personnel are notovercome during their escape.

Halogen free gives an indication of low smoke and low toxicity. Italso rules out halogen acid gas emission - a fact that is of interest toinsurers as acid smoke can destroy computer equipment and damage thestructure of a building.

All four properties: Highly flame retardant, Low smoke,Low toxicity, Halogen free, must be present to claim LFH.

Halogen free does not assure low smoke and low toxicity.

A low smoke and fume product may not be self-extinguishing let alonehighly flame retardant. Ensure your supplier provides performance dataon all four aspects of Low Fire Hazard performance.

Performance of Flexicon LFH products

Flame Retardancy

Limiting Oxygen Index (LOl) to BSEN ISO 4589 determines the percentageof oxygen in air that would need to be present to support combustion.The higher the percentage the greater flame retardancy.

Oxygen present in normal air 21%. The UK Code of Practice for railwayrolling stock requires 28% for overground and 34% for undergroundpassenger carriages.

UL 94 is an underwriter laboratories standard with flammabilityclassifications HB, V0, V1, V2. HB allows horizontal burning up to amaximum speed, V0 is highly flame retardant.

Smoke Density is evaluated to BS6853 annex D.8.3, Code ofPractice for fire precautions in the design and construction of passengercarrying trains. A plaque of materials is burnt in a 3 metre cubic chamber.A graph of smoke opacity against time is plotted which shows themaximum opacity (Ao) and the time taken to reach that opacity. LFHmaterials should have Ao < 0.03.

Toxic Fumes

Toxity tests such as BS6853 annexB and Naval standard NES713 burns aset amount of material and analyses the gases given off. The volume ofeach gas is multiplied by the toxicity index for each gas. The toxicityindex for each gas are added together to give an overall toxicity index forthe material.

NFF16-101/2 is a French Norm, used by railways, which gives anignition and fume rating from oxygen index, glow wire ignition, smokedensity and smoke toxicity tests.

ISO 9001

Flexicon is accredited to ISO 9001 2000by the British Standards Institution (BSI)for the design and manufacture of conduitsystems and accessories. Certificate NoFM58347.

IEC EN 61386

IEC EN 61386 is the new worldwide standard for conduit systems and is superceding the previous European conduitstandard EN 50086. Flexicon were one of the first company’s in the UK to have its products tested to the new standard.

Our Technical Director, Ian Gibson, is the chairman of both the IEC (worldwide) and CENELEC (European) committeesthat prepare conduit standards.

CE

Flexicon products are marked with the CE mark to show that they comply with the essential requirements of theEuropean Low Voltage Directive.

RoHS

All Flexicon’s products meet the requirements of the European RoHS Directive, Restriction of Hazardous substances.This precludes the use of certain toxic materials and heavy metals.

WEEE

Flexicon’s conduit products are not covered by the European WEEE Directive, Waste Electrical and Electric Equipment.

LLOYDS REGISTER

Specific conduit systems from Flexicon have Lloyds Register of Shipping type approval having been assessed forsuitability for marine and other arduous applications.

NORTH AMERICAN APPROVALS

Most of Flexicon’s nylon conduits and fittings have UL (Underwriters Laboratories) recognition for component usewithin UL listed equipment.

Some nylon conduits and fittings have cUL approval, which is UL listing to the UL standard UL1660 and UL approvalto the equivalent CSA standard CSA C22.2 No 227.2.1.

LTPUL conduit is UL listed to UL360 and CSA approved.

RAIL ACCREDITATIONS

Flexicon is registered with Achilles Link Up, the UK rail industry supplierqualification scheme, providing a single common registration, qualificationand audit process for suppliers that is shared by the UK rail industry -Supplier No 21015.

Flexicon’s design, manufacturing and supply of conduit systems have beenassessed and audited by Achilles Link Up for use on both National Rail andLondon Underground applications.

Many of Flexicon’s Low Fire Hazard products have been tested to therequired Rail Fire Performance standards of several countries including:France, Germany, Italy, Australia as well as the UK and LondonUnderground.
