to Protect Transformer Explosion
WHY RUPTURE DISKS FAIL: The main weaknessesof the rupture disk are the fact that the disk's stress atthe burst point is much greater than the yield stress.The stress-strain curve of the forward acting/tensionloaded rupture disk is shown. Once the disk ispressured beyond its yield point, the disk isirreversibly damaged.
Unless the pressure continues to increase to the burstpressure, the disk will fail far below set point, usuallyat the next pressure increase over yield point. Yes,when the disk brakes early, it “fails safe”, butconsider the needless pollution, loss of product,downtime, disk replacement cost and labor to replacethe disk. With the Rupture Pin, the pin stress is alwaysbelow the elastic limit. Because its mechanism offailure is Euler's Law, the pin cannot fatigue.
The fast depressurization system begins to
depressurize transformers in as little as 5.1
milliseconds, which is less than the time
required for the dynamic pressure peak generated by
the arc to become static pressure, thus avoiding
explosion and subsequent fire. Depressurization occurs
in milliseconds even if the arc is fed for a longer period.
The NFPA defines fast depressurization system as a
passive mechanical system designed to depressurize
the transformer a few milliseconds after the
occurrence of an electrical fault.
