TPL-BOur 2-stroke turbocharging propulsion booster
2
Powerful turbochargers for peak engine performance 75 % of a diesel engine’s power relies on one vital component – the turbocharger.
The ultimate goals of turbocharged engine development arehigher power and efficiency – two areas in which ABB’s TPLturbochargers make a vital contribution. The TPL-B serieswas developed for large, modern, low-speed 2-stroke dieselengines on ocean-going ships and in diesel power stations.Five frame sizes cover the engine output range of 3,000 to28,000 kW per turbo charger.
TPL turbochargers increase engine bmep and lower fuel consumption, while also helping customers satisfy strict environmental requirements.
A simple, modular design with minimized number of partsmakes the TPL-B easy to maintain. Customers benefit fromlow lifecycle costs and longer times between overhauls.
3
Built with the user in mindThe number of parts has been minimized to keep lifecycle costslow and shorten the time needed for overhauls and service.
The design of the TPL-B is fully aligned with market require-ments. TPL-B turbochargers meet customers’ as well as end-users’ need for a simpler construction with fewer parts, greater efficiency at higher pressures, and reduced engineemissions. Built to be robust and reliable, with a long opera-tional life, TPL-B turbochargers have numerous innovative features that also keep them compact. Service can be carriedout faster, even in confined spaces, thanks to the modulardesign and easy to handle parts.
Tried and testedABB performs a comprehensive series of qualification tests toensure the total reliability of its turbochargers. Overall reliabilityof the TPL-B is also improved by the special design of thebearing assembly and an emergency oil system that ensuressafe runout of the turbocharger rotor should the lubricationsystem fail.
Since being introduced to the market, more than 6000 TPL-B units have been specified or put into service world-wide.

Example of compressor map for TPL 85-B
CompressorThe compressor features a single piece, splitter-bladed aluminum alloy wheel with backswept blades for a wide map and peak efficiencies of more than 86 %. Use of large-diameter compressor wheels ensures high volume flow rates for optimized matching to the engine application. Different trims ensure that all 2-stroke market requirementsare met.

Design featuresBearings and casings.
Bearing lifetimeBenefiting from experience gained with over 50,000 ABB turbochargers with plain bearings in service worldwide, TPLplain bearings are designed to run for 36,000 hours beforebeing changed.
ABB developed the new bearing assembly for direct lubri-cation by the engine lube oil system. The main axial bearingconsists of a free-floating thrust disk with profiles on bothsides, rotating at about half the rotor speed. This ensuresthick oil films, offering extra-high resistance to wear causedby contaminated oil. Disk wear is also reduced by the appli-cation of an extremely hard coating. The radial bearing bushes are fixed with screws and centered in a squeeze oilfilm damper.

Emergency lube oil systemAn emergency lube oil system to ensure safe runout of theturbocharger rotor if the lubrication system fails is a standardfeature of the TPL-B series. TPL 91-B and TPL 85-B turbo -chargers have the emergency oil system integrated in thebearing casing for compactness and to minimize the oil flangeconnections. Smaller sizes have a tank mounted on top of the bearing casing. The system works by gravity and requiresno auxiliaries.
Optimized casing designTPL-B casings are optimized for applications on 2-strokeengines. Excellent flow dynamics and minimized thermal stressare ensured. Features include an integrated turbine washingdevice and temperature and pressure measurement. Casingsare insulated to keep surface temperatures and noise levelsas low as possible.
