CUT TO LENGTH (SHEETING) LINE

S&T Stainless is the first (and only) company in New Zealand to install a Cut To Length Line dedicated to levelling and cutting Stainless Steel coil into standard and custom length sheets. S&T Stainless recognised the need in the industry to assist designers, engineers, and fabricators, by giving them the ability to design and build with the added flexibility of a wide range of sheet sizes.

MATERIALS Materials commonly processed include: 304 2B, 304 BA, 304 Satin, 316 2B, 430 2B, 430 BA,, 430 Satin, and Deco patterned & embossed stainless steel. Other stainless steel material may be processed subject to prior arrangement.

COST SAVINGS Repetitive custom lengths reduce material wastage and labour costs, increase your workshop productivity, and reduce the risk of handling

damage. In the case of longer lengths you may be able to reduce the amount of welding and post fabrication labour costs.

SURFACE PROTECTION Polyethylene (PE) film can be applied to one or both sides to protect the material from incidental scratching. Various films are available on application to suit many different applications such as Laser Cutting, Deep Drawing, Perforating, Punching, Folding, etc. Our standard PE film is suitable for use by both Fibre and CO2 Laser Cutting equipment.

IDENTIFICATION Ink jet marking can be applied to the material or the protective film on request to identify material type, size, part numbers, or your company name for advertising purposes.

NO CONTAMINATION Stainless Steel dedicated – therefore no risk of cross metallic contamination.

C.O.M. may be processed subject to prior arrangement on an all care, no responsibility basis. If risks or material faults are identified prior to processing customers are contacted prior to proceeding.

ADVERTISING If your completed job is covered by a protective film and will be in public view prior to commissioning e.g. lift doors and architraves? We can print your company name on to the protective film, then everyone will know who the manufacturer is!

Please contact your nearest S&T Stainless branch to discuss any requirements you may have outside these standards

SATIN SHEET POLISHER New Zealand’s only commercial Stainless Steel Sheet Polisher giving the advantage of a consistent finish. All sheets supplied ex-stock are polished on the same machine, using the same settings.

POLISH We produce a satin (#4, brushed, or linished) finish. Pre-polish and in process inspection allows continual monitoring of quality. Although typically polished one side, we can produce exactly the same finish on both sides, on request. In comparison, mill polished material is reverse-ground and is likely to have a slightly different appearance to the prime polished side. A #5 finish is also achievable. Coarse polishes on the reverse side may be achieved for applications requiring a “key” for painting or for improved laminating (bonding) performance.

CONSISTENCY

If there is a chance that replacement panels may be required in the future, use our polish from the start. There are as many different finishes as there are polishers. We maintain a consistent set up, thereby enabling a closer match between sheets produced months or even years apart.

COST SAVINGS In the case of longer lengths a reduction in the amount of welding and post fabrication labour costs is achievable, as well as maintaining a consistent visual quality over the full length.

NO CONTAMINATION Only stainless steel and occasionally aluminium & brass are processed, using different polishing belts. Consequently there is no risk of cross metallic contamination.

SURFACE PROTECTION Polyethylene (PE) adhesive film can be applied to one or both sides to protect the material from incidental scratching.

CUSTOMERS OWN MATERIAL

C.O.M. may be processed subject to prior arrangement on an all care, no responsibility basis. If risks or material faults are identified prior to processing customers are contacted prior to proceeding.

MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS WIDTH: up to 1524mm

INKJET PRINTER

IDENTIFICATION

When sheets are processed via our Cut to Length (Sheeting) Line or our Satin (Sheet) Polisher, we can print the grade, sheet size, part number, etc, on to the surface of the material (or the protective coating). Reduce lost production time from confusion over material grades, and part identification

PE FILM APPLICATOR

To protect the quality of a stainless steel surface during fabrication, installation and commissioning, Polyethylene (PE) films are the answer. S&T Stainless has the ability to apply these films during the sheeting and polishing process, and also as a separate “one off” function. We regularly apply film to aluminium, copper and brass sheet to customer’s own material (C.O.M).

FILM VARIETIES

Many different combinations of film & adhesive types, film thickness, and adhesive levels, are available to suit the various processes metals are put through, e.g. Laser Cutting, Deep Drawing, Perforating, Punching, Folding, etc. Many of these films enable marker pens to be used for marking out fabrication details. Our standard PE film is suitable for use by both Fibre and CO2 Laser Cutting equipment.

COST SAVINGS Expensive re-polishing or re-manufacture can be avoided by using these very cost effective films.

IDENTIFICATION Ink jet marking can be applied to the protective film on request to identify material type, size, part numbers, or your company name for advertising purposes.

CUSTOMERS OWN MATERIAL

C.O.M. may be processed subject to prior arrangement on an all care, no responsibility basis. If risks or material faults are identified prior to processing customers are contacted prior to proceeding.

Surface Finish for coating smooth cold rolled surfaces

DIE-COVER FILM

DIE-COVER FILM is a proven

and economical way to prevent die marks when using a press brake to form Stainless Steel, Aluminium, pre-finished or painted metals. Film life will vary with a number of factors such as the thickness of the metal being formed, the type of metal and the severity of the bend. While some customers forming light gauge aluminium are getting several hundred bends on a single piece of film, others forming heavy gauge stainless steel may get only a few bends.

Simply lay Die-cover film over the female die.

SURFACE FINISHES – COIL, SHEET AND PLATE

µm = micron (1/1000th of a millimetre) Ra = Surface Roughness average, the arithmetic average of the absolute values of the roughness profile. Surface roughness figures shown are typical, and are only to be used as a guide. These figures can vary between different manufacturers and material thicknesses. Please contact S&T Stainless for assistance with specification and availability details.

MILL FINISHES

FINISH PROCESS TYPE SURFACE CONDITION NOTES

No 1 Hot rolled, annealed, and pickled.

Coarse finish with a dull grey appearance and low reflectivity. Typical surface roughness = 2 - 8 µm (Ra).

Most common hot rolled plate finish available. Not suitable for decorative applications.

2D Cold rolled, annealed, and pickled.

A semi-matt silver / grey surface. Smoother than No. 1 finish but rougher than 2B finish.

Due to the wide range of thicknesses available in 2B finish, 2D is no longer stocked.

2E Cold Rolled, Annealed, Shot Blasted, and Pickled.

A slightly coarse, silver / grey surface. Typical surface roughness = 2 - 4 µm (Ra)

Usually applied to stainless steel grades with a mill scale which is very resistant to pickling solutions - eg duplex and super-austenitic.

2B Cold rolled, annealed, pickled, and skin passed.

A semi-bright non reflective finish. Typical surface roughness = 0.10 - 0.50 µm (Ra).

Most widely used cold rolled finish available. Frequently used as an hygienic surface without further polishing. Often used as the basis for most polished and brushed finishes.

BA Bright annealed, followed by cold rolling with highly polished rolls.

Highly reflective finish, semi-mirror like. Very smooth. Typical surface roughness = 0.05 - 0.20 µm (Ra).

Usually supplied with protective film coating. Manufactured items usually require no further polishing before being put into service. Often used as the basis for coloured finishes.

SPECIAL FINISHES

FINISH PROCESS TYPE SURFACE CONDITION NOTES

Satin (No.4)

Mechanically polished abrasive finish, often referred to as "brushed" or "linished" finish.

A silver-like, metallic, satin finish with low reflectivity. Typical surface roughness = 0.20 - 1.50 µm (Ra).

Uniform, longitudinal, uni-directional polishing lines are "broken" to create a series of short scratches. A fine 120 - 240 grit abrasive finish suitable for architectural applications.

Satin (Low-Ra)

Satin polished sheet finish, with monitoring and recording of Ra measurements.

A silver-like metallic satin finish with low reflectivity. Typical surface roughness = 0.20 - 0.50 µm (Ra).

Polished by our NZ based stainless steel sheet polisher. Regular measurements recorded to guarantee a surface roughness of < 0.50 µm (Ra), suitable for exterior architectural applications.

Hairline Mechanically polished abrasive finish.

A silver-like metallic satin appearance. Typical surface roughness = 0.20 - 1.50 µm Ra)

Longitudinal polishing lines are "unbroken" creating a series of long hair-like scratches.

Super Mirror (No. 8)

Buff polished with soft cloth mops and special polishing compounds.

Ultra-smooth, highly reflective mirror finish. Typical surface roughness = 0.05 - 0.10 µm (Ra).

Mirror quality finish with no polishing lines remaining visible. Ideal for use as unbreakable mirrors and architectural features. This is the most resistant surface finish to "tea staining".

Patterned (Textured)

BA or Satin finishes receive an extra rolling from special imprinted or etched rolls.

3-dimensional 1 or 2 sided decorative patterns. eg Linen, Checks, 5WL, etc.

Rigidity and strength can be increased by as much as 50%, enabling thinner sheet to be used and reducing weight. Hard wearing and scratch resistant architectural finishes.

Granex® Bead blasted with fine, medium, or coarse glass beads.

Uniform, non-directional, low reflective surface.

Surface roughness to be specified at the time of ordering. Can also be coloured.

Coloured Electrolytic thickening of the chromium oxide layer (passive film) creates colours through light interference.

Colours - Bronze, Gold, Red, Purple, Blue, Green, Charcoal, & Black. Typically produced using BA, Satin, Mirror, and / or Patterned finishes.

As colours are not a pigment, they never fade or crack. No toxic fumes are emitted in fire conditions. Heat resistant to 200°C.

WHY USE TEXTURED FINISHES?

Helps to hide scratches, dents, and other impact damage, unlike plain flat surfaces.

Improves the optical flatness of the material, along with reducing glare.

Patterning process improves the materials strength by up to 50%, enabling thinner (lighter) sheets to be used.

Increased life expectancy reduces frequency of costly replacement, ultimately saving costs.

Stainless steel's fire resistance, along with being 100% recyclable, makes it an ideal construction material.

See page A12 for suggested applications for textured stainless steel.

See our Architectural Products catalogue for further options and more details.

WHY USE COLOURTEX™ FINISHES?

Colours are not a coating and will not fade. They are colour fast up to 200°C.

Colourtex™ material will not emit poisonous fumes during a fire, as the colour is inherently part of the stainless steel.

By combining the various colours and patterns, 100's of different effects can be obtained from the manufacturer.

For advice on vandal resistance (Low, Medium, or High), contact our Architectural Products Manager.

Increased life cycle provides long term cost savings.

Colourtex™ colouring process allows the material to remain 100% recyclable

See our Architectural Products catalogue for further options and more details.
