TANK SELECTIONFirstdeterminetheGPMrequired.TheGPM(gallonsperminute)ofthe pump must equal the total number of fixtures. Fixtures include allfaucets,toiletsandwaterconsumingappliances(don’tincludewatertreatmentappliances,suchasahotwatertankorwaterfilter). Example: a house with one full bathroom (sink, tub/shower, toilet),kitchensink,basementsink,outsidefaucet,washingmachineand dishwasher is equal to 8 fixtures and therefore would require 8 GPM.

Nowthatyou’vedeterminedtheGPM,taketheGPMsystemrequirement that you figured out, multiply by 3 and go to the next largesttanksize.Example;8GPMx�=24Gallons.ThereforeuseanRL��tank.

Example: a housewithonefullbathroom(sink,tub/shower,toilet),kitchensink,basementsink,outsidefaucet,washingmachineanddishwasheris equal to 8 fixtures and therefore wouldrequire8GPM.

3 WHAT IS THE WELL DIAMETER?

2-1/2InchesJetpumpsinshallowwellapplications(depthlessthan25feet)shouldbeinstalledusing1-1/4inchsuctionpipingwithafootvalve.

What is pre-charge pressure?Pre-chargepressurereferstotheamountofairinpsithatispumpedintoatankpriortoinstallation–usuallyatthefactory.Mosttanksareprovidedwitha28-psipre-charge(�8psiintheRL81toRL119sizes).Thepre-chargeisthe“spring”thathelpstocreatewaterpressure. As the diaphragm fills with water, it compress-esthepre-charge.Ina�0/50system,thepumpwillcontinuetopropelwaterintothetankuntilthepressureinthetankreaches50psi.

How much pressure (pre-charge) should be in my tank?Yourtanksshouldbepressurizedto2psilessthanthecut-inpressuresetting(forexample,ifyourpressureset-tingsare�0/50,thenyourcut-inpressuresettingis�0psiandyourtankshouldhavea28psipre-charge).

How do I check or change my pre-charge?Youmustcompletelydrainthetanktocheckpre-charge.Todothis,shutthepowerofftothepumpandopen(turn-on)afaucetinthehouse.Thiswilldrainthetank and not allow it to refill. On the top of the tank you will find an air valve (similar to the air valve on your tires)–useatirepressuregaugetochecktheairpres-sure.

Withavoltmetercheck;1)fuseboxtomakesurefull voltageisavailable;2)pressureswitchterminals,tomakesurepressureswitchispassingvoltagecorrectly;and�)terminalstripsinpumpcontrolboxordisconnectswitchboxtomakesurevoltageisavailablethere.On1½ through�HP:Pushredoverloadresetbutton(s)onthebottomofcontrolcenter.

2. Cablesplicesormotorwindingsmaybegrounded,shorted,oropen-circuited.

Consult certified electrician or service technician. Do not attempt to disassemble pump or motor.

Have a certified electrician verify voltage at the electrical disconnectbox(2-wire)orthepumpcontrolbox(�-wire)whilethepumpisoperating.Ifthevoltageislow,yourpowercompanymayneedtoraiseitorinstallationmayrequirelargerwire.Discusswiththe power company or a certified electrician. Check voltage with arecordingmeteriftroublereoccurs.

2. Faultypressureswitch. Replaceswitch.�. Droppipeisleaking. Raiseonelengthatatimeuntiltheleakisfound.Whenwater

standsinthepipe,thereisnoleakbelowthispoint.4. Waterlevelinthewellmay

becometoolowwhenpumpisrunning.

Lower pump further into well, make sure it is between five and ten feetfromthebottomofthewell.Installavalveintothedischargepipebetweenthepumpandthepressuretank.Usethevalvetorestrict flow until discharge rate does not exceed the well recovery rate.WARNING! To prevent the possibility of dangerous high pressure, install a relief valve in the discharge pipe between the pump and flow restriction valve. The relief valve must be capable of passing full pump flow at 75 PSI.

Fuses blow or overload protector trips when motor is running.

1. Loworhighvoltage. Whilethemotorisrunning,voltageshouldnotexceedplus5%orminus5%ofratedvoltageshownonmotornameplate.Callyourpowercompanytoadjustlinevoltageifitisnotwithintheselimits.

2. �-Wireonly:Highambient(atmospheric)temperature.

Makesurethepumpcontrolboxisinstalledoutofdirectsunlight.

�. �-Wireonly:pumpControlboxwronghorsepowerorvoltageforinstallation.

Comparehorsepowerandvoltageratingofmotor(frommotornameplate)withthoseofthepumpcontrolbox(frompumpcontrolboxnameplate).Thesenumbersmustmatch.

4. Wiresizeistoosmall.Improperlyconnectedinthepumpcontrolbox.

Seecableselectionchartonpage6andmakesurethewiresizesmatch specifications in table.

Consult certified electrician or a service technician to determine ifthisisthecauseoftheproblemornot.Do not attempt to disassemble pump or motor.

Your pump delivers little or no water.

1. Waterlevelinalowproducingwelldropstoolowwhilepumpisoperating,causingittoairlock.(Resultinginlossofprimeandpossiblyseriousdamagetothepump)

Lowerthepumpfurtherintothewell,butmakesureitisatleastfive feet from the bottom of the well. Install a control valve in the dischargepipebetweenthepumpandpressuretank.Usethecontrol valve to restrict the flow until the discharge rate does not exceedwellrecoveryrate.WARNING! To prevent the possibility of dangerously high pressure, install a relief valve in the discharge pipe between pump and flow restriction valve. Relief valve must be capable of passing full pump flow at 75 PSI.

2. Intakescreenispartiallyplugged. Limeorothermatterinthewatermaybuilduponscreen.Pullpumpandcleanscreen.

�. Checkvalve(s)maybestuck. Makesurethatthebuilt-incheckvalveinthepumpandanycheckvalvesinthedischargelinearefreetoopenproperly.

4. Voltageistoolow;themotorrunsslowly,causinglowdischargepressure(head)andhighoperatingcurrentdraw.

Have a certified electrician verify voltage at the electrical disconnectbox(2wire)orcontrolcenter(�wire)whilethepumpisoperating.Ifthevoltageislow,thepowercompanymayneedtoraiseitorinstallationmayrequirelargerwire.Discussthiswiththepowercompanyoralicensedelectrician.

1. Wellwatermaybegaseous. Ifyourwellisnaturallygaseousandyoursystemhasastandardtank, remove the bleeder orifices and plug the tees. If the condition is serious, check with certified well professionals.

Pump starts too frequently

1. Leakinthepressuretankorplumbing.

Checkallconnectionswithsoapsudsforairleaks.Fixanyleaksyoufind. Check the plumbing for water leaks. Fix any leaks you find.

2. Pressureswitchisdefectiveoroutofadjustment.

Ifnecessary,replaceswitch.

�. Checkvalveisleaking. Inspectvalvesandreplaceifnecessary.4. Tankiswaterlogged. CaptiveAir®Tanks:Checkthetankforleaks;correctifpossible.

Prechargetanksto18PSIwitha20-40PSIswitch,28PSIfora�0-50PSIswitch,�8PSIfora40-60PSIswitch,etc.Standardtanks:Checkthe tank for leaks; correct if possible. Check bleeder orifices and cleanbleeders;replaceifnecessary.

5. Droppipeleaking. Raiseonelengthofpipeatatimeuntiltheleakisfound.Whenwaterstandsinthepipethereisnoleakbelowthispoint.

6. Pressureswitchistoofarfromthetank.

Movethepressureswitchtowithinonefootofthetank.

Fuses blow oroverload protector trips when the motor starts

1. Fusesorwiresaretoosmall. Replacewithcorrectwiresizes.2. Loworhighvoltage. Whilemotorisrunning,voltageshouldnotexceedplus5%orminus

5%orratedvoltageshownonmotornameplate.Calltheelectricpowercompanytoadjustlinevoltageifnotwithintheselimits.

�. Cablesplicesormotorwindingsgrounded,shortened,oropen.

Employ certified electrician examine all connections and wiring in controlpanel.Ifnecessary,repairthem.

Inspect capacitors. Employ a certified electrician to check capacitors&replacethemifnecessary.WARNING! hazardous voltage, can shock, burn, or cause death. Capacitors may still carry voltage charges even after being disconnected from wiring. Have them checked by a certified electrician.
