Oneofthemostcommonquestionsaskedis,whatistheworkinglifeofahelmet?Theanswertothisquestionand indeed all information pertaining to selection, care anduseisavailableinAS/NZS1800:1998.Thisstandardrecommends that in general terms the helmet should be replacedeverythreeyearsbaseduponindustrytesting.

EveryUniSafehelmethasanissuedatestickerontheinsideofthehelmetforwearerstorecordtheirnameanddateofissue.Threeyearshenceremovethehelmetfromuseor earlier if the helmet has changed in colour, exhibits any signsofwear,ordamageduetoimpactordeterioration.(AS/NZS1800:19983.4).

Ifthestickerhasnotbeenused,replacethehelmetthreeyears from the manufacture date stamp under the brim or peakofthehelmet.Inthecentreofthestampistheyearwithadirectionarrowpointingtothemonthofthatyearinwhichthehelmetwasmade.

Whenselectingarespirator,thereareanumberofissuesto consider. The basis for selection and performance ofrespiratorsinAustraliaisnormallybasedonOH&Slegislation,regulationsandontherelevantAustralianStandards:

AS/NZS1716 “Respiratory protective devices”-thisistheperformancestandard.Itsetsouttheperformanceparametersandrequirementsforthedifferenttypesofrespirators

AS/NZS1715 “Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices”providesuserswiththe information they need to select and use appropriate respiratory protection systems.

There are other regulations and codes of practice that specifytheappropriaterespiratoryprotectionforspecificapplicationse.g.forusewhenremovingasbestosandwhenspraying paints containing isocyanates.

Afteridentifyingthetypeandleveloftherespiratoryhazards,suitablerespiratoryequipmentfortheseconditionscanbeidentified.Normallytherewillbeanumber of options, depending on the local conditions, weartime,costandotherfactors.

Filter Classifications

UnderAS/NZS1716,filtersinrespiratorsarerequiredtomeetcertainperformancelevels-thisthenallowsdeterminationofitssuitabilityforuseagainstspecificcontaminantsatvariousconcentrationsasexplainedin AS/NZS1715.Seektheadviceofanoccupationalhygienistor safety professional to determine the correct options. Therearetwomaintypesoffilters:

Particle Filters

Filtersaretestedforcaptureefficiencyusingasaltaerosolchallengeagent.Underspecifiedtestconditions,theamountoftheseparticlesthatbreakthroughthefilterismeasuredwhichallowsclassificationofthefilter.

UndertheStandard,therearethreeclassesofparticlefilters:

P1 Formechanicallygeneratedparticleseg.dusts,flour,silica.Suitablefortherelatively“large”particles(mostly>1micron)releasedinoperationslikesanding,cutting,sawing,crushingetc.

P2 Formechanically&thermallygeneratedparticleseg.weldingfume.Thesefiltershaveahigherefficiencytodealeffectivelywithsmaller,thermallygeneratedparticleslikeweldingfumeandisalsorecommended for infection control applications eg. TB,fluorotherinfectiousdiseases.

Gas & Vapour Filters

Gas/Vapourfiltersareproducedspecificallyforuseagainstvariousgasesandvapoursandaretestedandmarkedaccordingly. There are many different types – some commononesare:

All personnel using PPE at height must be trained in the proper use and limitations of their equipment.

Fall Restraint

Fallrestraintisthepreferredapproachtofallprotection– itpreventsyoufromfallingandfromsufferingpossibleinjuryfromthefallarrestsystem.WorkrestraintisatechniquewhichusesPPEtopreventapersonfromenteringanareaofwhereariskoffallfromheightexists.

Work Positioning

WorkPositioningisatechniqueforsupportingapersonwhileworkingbymeansofPPEintension,insuchawayastopreventafall.

Fall Arrest

FallarrestisanapproachwhichmakesuseofitemsofPPEto stop a falling person under safe conditions. This means thatifaworkerisinapositionsuchthatiftheylosecontroltheywillfall.TheyareisrequiredtousePPEtolimitboththe distance and force of that fall.

Emergency Plan

AS/NZS1891.4statesthattherescueofafallenworkermustoccurassoonaspossible,asdoestheNationalCodeofPracticeforthePreventionofFallsfromHeightsinConstructionWork.Italsorecommendsthatapersonshould not use a fall arrest system unless there is at least oneotherpersononsitewhocanrescuetheuserintheeventofafall.Insomesituations,atleasttwopersonsmayberequiredtosafelyrescueapersonwhohashadafall.Thisrequiresspecifictraining.

Confined Space

Safeaccessandegressfromconfinedspacesrequirescarefulplanning.Whenaccessandegressalsoincludesthepotentialforfalls,thenitisconsideredasworkatheight.Inallcasesrescueandrecoverymustbeplannedandthepersonnel be trained in emergency procedures.
