Whereas the Acadian people, through the vitality of

their community, have made a remarkable contributionto Canadian society for almost 400 years;

Attendu que les Acadiens, par la vitalit de leur com-

munaut, contribuent de faon remarquable la socitcanadienne depuis prs de quatre cents ans;

Whereas on July 28, 1755, the Crown, in the course ofadministering the affairs of the British colony of NovaScotia, made the decision to deport the Acadian people;

Attendu que, le 28 juillet 1755, la Couronne, dans lecadre de ladministration des affaires de la colonie bri-tannique de la Nouvelle-cosse, a pris la dcision de d-porter les Acadiens;

Whereas the deportation of the Acadian people, com-monly known as the Great Upheaval, continued until1763 and had tragic consequences, including the deathsof many thousands of Acadians - from disease, in ship-

wrecks, in their places of refuge and in prison camps inNova Scotia and England as well as in the Britishcolonies in America;

Attendu que la dportation du peuple acadien, com-munment appele le Grand Drangement, sest poursui-vie jusquen 1763 et a eu des consquences tragiques,plusieurs milliers dAcadiens ayant pri par suite de ma-

Whereas We acknowledge these historical facts andthe trials and suffering experienced by the Acadian peo-ple during the Great Upheaval;

Whereas Canada is no longer a British colony but asovereign state, by and under the Constitution ofCanada;

Whereas when Canada became a sovereign state, withregard to Canada, the Crown in right of Canada and ofthe provinces succeeded to the powers and prerogativesof the Crown in right of the United Kingdom;

Whereas this Our present Proclamation does not, un-der any circumstances, constitute a recognition of legalor financial responsibility by the Crown in right ofCanada and of the provinces and is not, under any cir-cumstances, a recognition of, and does not have any ef-fect upon, any right or obligation of any person or groupof persons;

And Whereas, by Order in Council P.C. 2003-1967 ofDecember 6, 2003, the Governor in Council has directedthat a proclamation do issue designating July 28 of everyyear as A Day of Commemoration of the Great Up-heaval, commencing on July 28, 2005;

Now Know You that We, by and with the advice ofOur Privy Council for Canada, do by this Our Proclama-tion, effective on September 5, 2004, designate July 28of every year as A Day of Commemoration of the GreatUpheaval, commencing on July 28, 2005.

Sachez que, sur et avec lavis de Notre Conseil privpour le Canada, Nous, par Notre prsente Proclamation,laquelle prend effet le 5 septembre 2004, dsignons le 28juillet de chaque anne, compter de 2005, comme Journe de commmoration du Grand Drangement .
