Metric System Basics
QUANTITIES• There are QUANTITIES that can be measured– WHAT CAN YOU MEASURE?• ________ (distance) • ________ (space inside)• ________ (matter inside)• _________ (force of gravity)• ___________ (kinetic energy of a material)• _______ (space between events)
BASICS
• Base Units– Each quantitiy has a “base unit” which has a
known, set size.
Quantity Base UnitVolume Liter (l)Mass Gram (g)Length Meter (m)
Metric System BASICS
• POWERS OF 10 (“x10” or “/10”)
– ALL units in the metric system divide evenly in to 10 equal parts!
Ex: – 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters (mm)– 1 decimeter = 10 centimeter (cm)– 1 meter = 10 decimeters (dm)
– It’s EASY to change (convert) from one unit to another, because you just multiply (or divide) by the correct factor of 10 – bigger or smaller.
• Ex: 10 millimeters = ? centimeters?
– 10 mm X 1 cm = 10mm X 1 cm = ? cm 10 mm 10 mm
Basics
• PREFIXES– Prefixes are added to base units • to make SMALLER and LARGER size units of
measurement • for measuring SMALLER and LARGER amounts.
SMALLER LARGER Deci- = 1/10 x Deca- = 10xCenti- = 1/100 x Hecto- = 100xMilli- = 1/1,000 x Kilo- = 1,000x
Metric Length• The metric base unit unit for Length is the
meter. • A meter stick is exactly 1 meter (m) long
• It has 10 decimeters (dm), • 100 centimeters (cm), • and 1,000 millimeters (mm).
• 1 dm = ? cm = ? mm
Here’s a small section of a meter stick. About how long is it in dm’s, cm’s and mm’s?
Length
– Add each of the prefixes to the base unit for length.– Then write them and their values.
Smaller Unit Value Longer Unit Value (name) (fraction (name) (multiples
of a unit) of a unit)
deci meter _____ deca meter _____centi meter _____ hecto meter _____milli meter _____ kilo meter _____
Length
• Add each of the prefixes to the base unit for length, then write them and their values:
Smaller Unit Value Longer Unit Value (name) (fraction) (name) (multiples
of a unit) of a unit)
