The Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contempo-rary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-perfect supporting performances. The film’s hal-lucinatory vision was obscured in the American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Page 69: Process Book - DVD Packaging

THERE’S A CERTAIN ACCURACY involved in creating packaging for a prod-uct — specifically something so widely-seen as the semi-cult-classic film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Truly, what is most iconic of the film is Bowie himself, followed by Bowie’s neon hair, and the contrasting blue color pal-ette of the film. It is hard to step outsode of these things when creating a brand for the film. But there really is something truly magical about the cinematography of this film. The spacey 70s undertones nearly bleed inspi-ration for the graphic designer. Each shape and sillhouette is made with an intention that matches the film’s ambiance. At the end of the day, I let the aura of the film help evolve my work into something I’m truly proud of.
