Message from the Director
This is a very good opportunity today, that School of Postgraduate
Studies, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia again successfully hold an annual
international seminar, consecutively for the fourth times in its series. It is a
strategic event in term of academic, so I hope that we can continue this
good tradition and develop it better from time to time.
In the era of globalization and information technology advance,
today, our society is facing the wave of changes that undoubtedly raising
a concern on its negative impact. It is clear that we can get benefit from
all potential the era offers, but we should also aware that many will be put
aside by this trend, or even replaced. The sign is already here when every
day we always have new things, lot of innovations to adapt even in our
campus management and services or personal choices.
In line with the vision of our University as a leading and outstanding
in higher degree education especially in the field of teaching and
pedagogic, the School of Postgraduate Studies is a center of advance
research and development to get our next generation ready in facing such
challenges. There is no time for being apologetic, and I believe this 4th
International Seminar on Social Studies and History Education (ISSSHE) 2019
is the way of scholars in social studies and history education to come
forward and offer their best thought to tackle the issues.
I would like to thanks Professor Nana Supriatna and his team from
Study Program of Social Studies Education for his remarkable effort on this
event as well as the best appreciation to the invited speakers for their
participation. The School will always happy to have you here and I hope
that we can continue our cooperation better and wider in the next future.

hope that our small contribution today will give a big impact towards
society development, now and the future.

Welcoming Remarks
Local wisdom as a set of values derived from cultural uniqueness is
one of the last strongholds of every nation in the stream of globalization.
Based on a universal acknowledgment that not a single culture is less
precious than others, these values are always relevant to be explored,
maintained, and developed. However, its existence is often ignored. Its
essence as an insight that guides human behavior in life is now fading and
sometimes even considered outdated.
The existence of local wisdom is closely related to the development
of science. Specifically, as a matter of sustainable development,
education becomes the central actor in the process of regeneration and
cultural inheritances. For this reason, it is a need that Social Studies and
History Education explore and utilize these values as a practical solution
amid all our current global issues.
Some of global issues we are facing such as global warming,
overpopulation, migration, vertical and horizontal conflict, social injustice,
violations of human rights, low quality of HDI, the negative impact of
information technology development, to the emergence of artificial
intelligence that requires improvement of student critical thinking, all of
these need an interdisciplinary attention and response to overcome. When
modern technology seems struggling for it, the values that exist in each
community are potential to solve these problems.
At this very good moment, I would like to express my highest
appreciation to the invited speakers, Professor David Reeve from UNSW,
Australia; Professor Roel V. Avila from PNU, Philippines; and Mr. Amika
Wardhana, Ph.D. from UNY, Indonesia for their participation in The 4th
International Seminar on Social Studies and History Education 2019. To the
former Director of SPS UPI, Professor Yaya S. Kusumah and our current
Director, Professor Syihabuddin for their support, the committee who
tirelessly planned and executed this seminar and not most of all, the
presenters and participant who have enthusiastically participated in this
event, my biggest thank for you and hope you enjoy our event.
Kind regards.
