When

Commander Robert Williamson stood up at our Nov 12 meeting to tell us about WWII, we were pretty sure we were hearing from an authority. It was probably the half-acre of medals on his chest that said, "Here's a guy you should pay attention to". Even people like myself, whose closest contact with war had been when I forgot my first wedding anniversary, perked up. Just a day after Remembrance Day he was telling us the individual stories of three local (Hamilton guys) veterans, a navy man, a soldier, and an airman. He had interviewed them extensively, too bad that all have now passed away. Using men from the three main participating forces is a great idea. The account of a multi-year tour of duty by Alex Tennent on HMCS Iroquois is interesting. Alex was fortunate to be on the new (1942), powerful (44,000hp), fast (over 40mph), destroyer as it roamed from Canada to Britain, all over the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic and as far as Murmansk, in the USSR. A sister ship, HMCS Haida, is now on permanent display in Hamilton. Especially interesting is the fact that Russia awarded med-als to our Canadian men for their bravery in leading con-voys of supplies to them, while Canada did not give a medal or commendation to honour this brave deed.

Soldier Bill Calligan managed to get into battle in two of the war's worst spots, the battle for Italy, then D-Day. You would have thought that after surviving Italy, the brass might have given him a pass on D-Day. Airman Bill Randle was in Westdale High School's first Air Cadet Corps and piloted a Lancaster over Germany, remembering well the raids on Hitlers hideaway, Berch-tesgaden, and the heavily defended missile launch sites at Peenemunde. But found Operation Manna over Holland the most rewarding. Just before cease of hostilities in May 1945, more than 3.000 flights were made by Lancasters to drop food for civilians nearly starved by the German occupation. Commander Williamson gave us a great capsule look at WW II, covering many things we hadn't heard before. But before we leave our meeting and our brave fighting men, I must mention some brave Probus members on Nov 12, who were brave enough to sneak away from the meet-ing, risking death from the glaring stares of about 80 of their brethren, for not placing 2 bucks in the collection pail. The 84 members at the meeting coughed up a total of only $158.95.

Meeting

Review by Bob Chambers

A large number of our Probus members brave inclement weather to attend our meetings. Also there are those who cannot get out to our meetings due to age related matters.
