Established in 1907, Berkshire School is a co-ed, college preparatory boarding and day school that prepares 391 ninth through twelfth graders and post-graduates for a global future. Berkshire is guided by its mission: “Rooted in an inspiring setting, Berkshire School instills the highest standards of character and citizenship and a commitment to academic, artistic, and athletic excellence. Our community fosters diversity, a dedication to environmental stewardship, and an enduring love for learning.” The 400-acre campus is nestled at the base of Mount Everett in Sheffield, Massachusetts within 90 minutes of Hartford and Albany and two-and-a-half hours to New York City and Boston. Its student body represents 32 states and 28 countries with 27% identified as students of color and 18% international. There are 87 administrative and teaching faculty with 61% holding advanced degrees. The average class size is 12 with the student to faculty ratio 5:1. At the heart of Berkshire’s academic program is a rigorous and comprehensive college preparatory curriculum that fosters critical thinking, problem solving and intellectual curiosity across all disciplines. Among the 146 courses are 17 A.P. offerings with pioneering programs such as Advanced Math/Science Research, Advanced Humanities Research, Sustainable Resource Management, the Ritt Kellogg Mountain Program, the Barbara Kenefick Center for Learning and Pro Vita Winter Session. Nearly 90% of the Class of 2013 earned acceptances to Barron’s Profile of American Colleges’ “Most Competitive” and “Highly Competitive” colleges and universities. Berkshire’s commitment to state-of-the-art facilities includes a new fine arts center, which opened in 2013 and increased the area devoted to the arts by 256%; a 48,000-square-foot, LEED Gold-certified math and science center which opened in 2012; a 117,000-square-foot athletic facility and an 8-acre solar field which provides 48% of the school's energy needs and earned Berkshire national recognition for its efforts in environmental conservation. In 2013, Berkshire School was named a Green Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education, one of only 64 schools in the nation to be so honored and one of only ten private schools to earn the prestigious distinction. The school’s operating budget is $21 million with an endowment presently valued at $112 million and a plant value of $190 million. The Annual Fund generates over $2.5 million annually. Committed to a diverse student body, Berkshire awards $4.4 million in financial aid annually with an average grant of $40,574 per student. The school is governed by a dedicated 30-member board of trustees, nearly all of whom are alumni or Berkshire parents past or present, passionate about advancing the school’s mission while investing in its future.
