u Dear CUREageous Friends & Supporters,It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 10th Annual Illinois CancerCare Foundation CUREageous event! This evening’s Outrageous Party is “extra special” as we celebrate a Decade of Research! HOPE! IMPACT! Tonight we will celebrate patients and their family members, caregivers, physicians, researchers and staff who are committed to improving cancer patient’s lives throughout central and western Illinois.

NEW this year in honor of a “Decade of Rock Docs”, we will be announcing live this evening the winner of the Inaugural Rock Doc Outstanding Alumni Award!

Since 2001, No One Fights Alone has been the mantra of the Illinois CancerCare Foundation. We want every cancer patient to have every weapon available in their battle against this disease. Please notice “Celebrate Sam” above the stage - Sam represents every cancer patient. Our Foundation’s mission and funds raised are to help make that possible every day for local cancer patients and their families.

The Foundation started as a way to manage donations from patients and families who wanted to give back and help further the cause. It wasn’t long before the physicians at Illinois CancerCare, P.C. realized the Foundation could play a much bigger role in the fight byhelping fund clinical trial research. Today the Foundation provides $400,000 a year to support the shortfall in the clinical cancer research program. This research program accelerates the development of interventions for preventing, treating, recovering from and curing cancer. The Foundation’s support allows Illinois CancerCare, P.C. to keep more than 100 clinical trials open locally at any given time.

Since we opened, 10,000 Illinois CancerCare patients have participated in almost 1,500 nationally-renowned clinical cancer research trials while staying in their home surrounded by family and friends.

CUREageous is our signature fundraiser of the year. Tonight’s proceeds fund clinical research, education, and patient support and assistance programs. All money raised stays local, giving cancer patients the very best cancer care possible right here in their hometown. Yourpartnership keeps HOPE alive!

Hope. It is something we can all provide during a cancer diagnosis. Your participation this evening provides genuine hope and loving compassion to those forever touched by cancer. On behalf of our Board of Directors, Advisors, and Young Leaders, and our CUREageous event committee, thank you for joining us and for giving so generously.

We are Grateful for your support -Celebrating a Decade of CUREageous!

Friends in the Fight,

Tell us about you - Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school? What makes you, YOU?Born, raised and educated in Romania.Tenacity and complete dedication to my work.

Looking back over your career, what are you most proud of?Demonstrating to myself that you can achieve things by working hard.

How do you spend your time when you’re not working? What do you like to do to relax?Reading, traveling and visiting friends. I relax by listening to all kinds of music, mainly hard rock, and watching soccer.

If you had an extra four hours in the day, how would you fill that time?Spending time with my children.

What made you choose to getinvolved in research? The need to think “out of the box” and applying new approaches to existing problems.

Tell us about the best part of your work.Taking very difficult patients, managing them, and seeing the light in their eyes when they get better.

Did you always know you wanted to go into the medical profession? If not, what did you want to do? Initially I wanted to be a nuclear physicist until I discovered medicine. This took over!

DR. JOSEPH R. EVANSRadiation Oncology | OSF St. Francis Medical Center

Tell us about you - Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school? What makes you, YOU?I grew up in a small town called Cary at the edge of the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I went to Catholic grade school and our family spent a lot of time doing youth sports, spending time with family, and attending Cubs and Bears games. We still have the Bears season tickets that my late grandfather first got to see them playing at Wrigley Field. In high school, I played soccer and tennis all 4 years, but more attention turned to academics as I did well and looked ahead to college. I had always gravitated towards math and science and wanted to be a doctor as long as I can remember, and so I decided to major in Physics which would also fit into pre-med require-ments. I chose to go to University of Iowa, where my grandfather and his brother went, and which had a big medical center and medical school to get experience in that area. Based on my deep interest in research, I chose to do a combined MD-PhD program at Northwestern University which provided a comprehensive foun-dation of medical knowledge and research practices, for which I focused on the biology of cancer cells. Towards the end of medical, I was fortunate to stumble across the field of Radiation Oncology which is a fantastic combination of my cancer and Physics background.

Looking back over your career, what are you most proud of?I have been most proud of all the wonderful people I have been able to meet and develop relationships with, which is an endless resource for clinical knowledge and support in this difficult and challenging career.

How do you spend your time when you’re not working? What do you like to do to relax?I spend a lot of time with my family including taking our daughters on bike rides or to the park. My wife and I like to go out to dinner and hang out with our wonderful group of friends when everybody is able to find babysitters.

If you had an extra four hours in the day, how would you fill that time?I would probably split it between hanging out with my family, exercising, and staying caught up on work.

What made you choose to get involved in research? As far back as I can remember, back to grade school, I have had an insatiable curiosity to figure out how things work, particularly biology. Research provides the opportunity to follow that curiosity to the limits and expand human knowledge which has always been an inspiration to me.

Tell us about the best part of your work. The best part is that I am able to talk patients through their cancer diagnosis and the treatment options going forward, and they are grateful that it helps them understand the situation and regain a sense of control.

Did you always know you wanted to go into the medical profession?Yes – I wanted to be a doctor as far back as I can remember, and feel very lucky I have had this opportunity.

DR. PATRICK L. GOMEZMedical Oncology | Illinois CancerCare

Tell us about you - Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school? What makes you, YOU? I grew up in a military family on the Presidio of San Francisco. I felt privileged to grow up ther- I was exposed to immense diversity and it challenged me to make choices for myself as well as accepting others who chose to be different. After med school, I trained in the West Coast where I met my wife, Neva, who was in dental school. After relocating to the Midwest to build a family and start a new career outside the military, I tried to instill those early learned values while raising our two daughters.People in the Midwest are very engaging but in return expect the same, which has taught me compassion and to recognize that true effective healthcare means engaging with patients to gain trust, know a little bit about their personal life, and delivering the best medical care possible. I am most grateful for being given the opportunity to cultivate these relationships with my patients and make a difference in their lives.Although my profession has dominated my life, my family is just as important to me and I continue to grow in pride and gratefulness for the wonderful family God has given me.

Looking back over your career, what are you most proud of?Clinical patient care has been my primary focus during my career and I have always tried to maintain the highest standard of care for my patients. I feel I have been able to accomplish this through personal education and being a part of the best team I have ever worked with - Illinois CancerCare.

How do you spend your time when you’re not working? What do you like to do to relax? My free time is usually devoted to my two dogs, Bentley and Stella, and my wife Neva. We are empty nesters but our two daughters also keep us busy. Christina graduates from med school and Sabrina from nursing school next year so I stay busy coaching them as they navigate their careers.

If you had an extra four hours in the day, how would you fill that time?I would exercise more and relax with my wife listening to music. I am known for my holiday decorations, so an extra 4 hours/day around Halloween and Christmas would sure come in handy.

What made you choose to get involved in research?Clinical research has always been an integral part of Hematology/Oncology because of our ongoing search for a better treatment with the ultimate goal of cure. To be a part of that search is how we can make a bigger difference in people’s lives, and what I strive to do.

Tell us about the best part of your work. What I enjoy most is engaging the staff to care for patients like family and developing relationships and experiences that we all share, and grow from, as we care for our patients.

Did you always know you wanted to go into the medical profession?I was able to make good on my career choice after telling my sixth grade teacher that I was going to be a doctor like my dad. I attend-ed the University of California, Irvine, and continued my family legacy and attended Duke Medical School on an Army scholarship.

Through this program, we are able to provide even more compassion, support and hope to our patients over the holidays.
