QB KURT WARNERPro Football Hall of Fame Finalist

Class of 2017

Kurt Warner’s career is arguably the most incred-ible in the nearly 100-year history of the National Football League. His improbable journey began with a quick training camp stop as an undrafted NFL rookie free agent out of Northern Iowa and was followed by stints in the Arena League and NFL Europe, not to mention as the most-famous shelf-stocker in supermarket history.

Fate and faith would lead him back to the NFL where he achieved unimaginable and unprece-dented success, frequently on the game’s big-gest stage. Few have ever combined Hall of Fame-caliber on-field play with an even greater level of off-field excellence the way Kurt Warner has. As such, his place among the game’s all-time greats is undeniable.

Only Tom Brady (11) and Peyton Manning (9) have more 300-yard passing games than Warner (6) and only Matt Ryan (67.6) has a better completion percentage than Warner (66.5). • Despite playing in just 13 career postseason games, his 31 TD passes rank seventh all time behind Tom Brady (61 in 33 games), Joe Montana (45 in 23 games), Brett Favre (44 in 24 games), Peyton Manning (40 in 27 games), Aaron Rodgers (36 in 17 games) and Dan Marino (32 in 18 games).• Threw for at least 365 yards in an NFL-record six postseason contests.• Warner and Daryle Lamonica are the only QBs in NFL history to throw for 5+ TD passes in multiple postseason games (each did so twice).• In Arizona's 2009 Wild Card win over the Packers, completed 80+ percent of his passes (87.8%), threw for over 300 yards (379) and threw five TD passes, a feat that has been accomplished just three times in NFL postsea-son history. Warner is the architect of two of those three performances.• Warner is one of nine quarterbacks in NFL history to start a conference championship game for two different teams.• Warner (7) joins John Elway (8) and Craig Morton (7) as the only QBs in NFL history to go at least seven years between Super Bowl appearances.

Warner started at QB in the Super Bowl three times during his career, earning MVP honors in Su-per Bowl XXXIV after the Rams 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans.Warner joins Craig Morton (Dallas and Denver) and Peyton Manning (Indy/Denver) as the only players to start at QB in the Super Bowl with two differ-ent teams. Both franchises Warner led to the Super Bowl had not earned a playoff berth in the previous decade. The Rams had eight seasons of 10-or-more losses in that span and the Cardinals had seven. After guiding the Cardinals to an appearance in Su-per Bowl XLIII, Warner returned to the Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl XXXVI following the 2001 season. WARNER IN THE POSTSEASON

In the 2009 Wild Card win over the Packers, Warner completed 87.8% of his attempts for 379 yards and 5 TDs. That is a feat that has been accom-plished just three times in NFL postseason history, and Warner accounts for two of those outings. Peyton Manning is the only other player to put up those numbers in a postseason game (2003 AFC Wild Card). HISTORIC OUTING VS. THE PACK

In the minds of many, Warner’s performance as a Cardinal combined with his earlier success with the Rams has secured an eventual spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The best case can be made by comparing Warner’s career to those of QBs already enshrined -- particularly the 15 modern era quarterbacks enshrined in the last 31 years. None of the other 15 modern-era HOF QBs can match Warner in completion percentage, yards per attempt or yards per game. Only Steve Young had a higher career passer rating than Warner’s 93.7. Only Dan Marino and Brett Favre had more career 300-yard passing games. Warner’s career totals for completions and yards exceeds the totals for five of the 15. His TD total (208) exceeds those of four. And Warner did it all in fewer games. While the 15 Hall of Famers in question averaged 194 games, Kurt needed only 124 to rank among them. The late start to his career, improbable emergence and subsequent career twists became part of his legend. There have been 12 quarterbacks in NFL history to start at least three Super Bowls. Eight of them are in the Hall of Fame. The only are Warner, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. There have been eight QBs who have won multiple NFL MVP awards and four of those are in the Hall of Fame (Unitas, Montana, Young, Favre). The other four are Warner, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. Warner threw 100 TD passes as a member of the Cardinals. Combined with his 102 TD passes with the Rams, he is one of just three players in NFL history with at least 100 TD passes with two seperate teams. Hall of Fame QB Fran Tarkenton threw for 239 TDs with the Minnesota Vikings (1961-66, 1972-78) and 103 TDs for the NY Giants (1967-71). Future Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning threw 399 TD pass while with the Indianapolis Colts (1998-11) and added 140 TDs with during his time with the Denver Broncos (2012-15).

Warner has long been one of the NFL’s best success stories, on and off the field. Over his final few NFL seasons, he received nearly as much praise for his character off the field as for his success on it. For all of his on-field ac-complishments, including a Super Bowl XXXIV win, two NFL Most Valuable Player awards and four Pro Bowl selections, Warner’s community work remains his biggest source of pride. In a 2009 Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players, Warner was selected by his peers as the active player who serves as the best role model on and off the field. Prior to the start of Super Bowl XLIII, Commissioner Roger Goodell and Connie Payton, Walter Payton’s wife, presented Warner with the 39th Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, the only league recognition that acknowledges a player’s off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence. After visiting flood-ravaged regions in 2008, he created a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor home builds throughout the Midwest. To date, he has raised over $650,000, including a $100,000 personal con-tribution, $100,000 from his foundation, and $100,000 each from the Ar-izona Cardinals and the NFL Disaster Relief Fund. Kurt and Brenda Warner established the "First Things First" foundation in 2001 and have personally contributed millions of dollars since then to host trips to Disney for Make-A-Wish families, furnish homes for low income single moms, and host Punt, Pass and Kick clinics with Special Olympic athletes, to name just a few of their initiatives.

THE FASTEST EVER TO 50

The sight of Warner wearing gloves in games – regardless of the condi-tions – became so commonplace in his last few years with the Cardinals that it’s hard to remember when he began the custom.Midway through the 2006 season, Warner started wearing them in prac-tice to improve his grip. He first wore the gloves in a game on 12/24/06 at San Francisco and he continued the practice from then on – covering a total of 51 games in all (47 starts). In that span, the be-gloved Warner was outstanding. He completed 66.1% of his passes (1,190 of 1,801) for 13,945 yards with 100 TDs compared to 49 INTs with a passer rating of 96.6. In that time, he topped 300 yards 18 times (including two 400-yard games) and had a passer rating of 100+ on 24 occasions.

During the 2009 season - playing in his 114th career game - Warner surpassed 30,000 passing yards for his career.
