Pro Football Draft Overview
A Sports Draft Unlike Any Other Unfolds
Remotely From All Over God’s Green Earth
As Opposed To Lost Wages, NV
While the wildly premature praise for the Browns’ operation in this space a year ago could have been anticipated to be off-course – given the team’s flailing ineptitude under three owners over the previous two decades – the complete reimagining of the 2020 NFL Draft could not have been forecast by anyone, unless they were under the influence of heavy hallucinogens. In the midst of a global epidemic unlike any since the Spanish Flu that was ending just as the NFL was coming into existence exactly 100 years ago, America’s biggest sports league – which long ago under Roger Goodell’s leadership proclaimed their desire to colonize the entire sports calendar – finds itself in the catbird seat which they have long sought: literally the only show in town.

Their close-up unfolds from humble remote locations all across the country as opposed to the self-congratulatory Roman late-capitalism orgy that was to emanate from the Las Vegas Strip. While the presentation of the draft will be as foreign as it could possibly be, the actual content of it isn’t that unfamiliar. As usual, there are a handful of franchise QBs on the marquee, with LSU’s Joe Burrow at the head of the line, decisively ahead of Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa largely because of the latter’s hip injury late last season. Oregon’s Justin Herbert is the consensus #3 pick and should go in the Top 10 with late-rising Jordan Love of Utah State in all likelihood going around the middle of the first round. It’s also a draft that will give 2014 a run for its money as the best WR class since 1996 with Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy shaping up as the best prospect in years. Shockingly, he may not be the first wideout off the board, as his teammate Henry Ruggs III and Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb challenging him for that spot. Offensive tackle is also a great position in this draft, with Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas and Louisville’s (mammoth) Makhi Becton all looming as potential Top 10 selections. Miami (3 picks) and Buffalo, Las Vegas & San Francisco (2 picks) are teams trying to clean up in a fairly-deep Day One class. As always, we will remember the winners and losers from this draft, but also, we’ll never forget the weird and tragic Coronavirus circumstances surrounding it.

NOTE: Draft rankings compiled by FDH Senior
Editor Jason Jones.
If the present Coronavirus crisis hasn’t taught us all that you can’t take anything for granted, go back 12 months and ponder the assumption that Miami would tank for Tua Tagovailoa. First of all, the team showed tremendous signs of life with one of the worst rosters on paper in recent league history en route to a 5-11 record (including a December upset of New England that served as the beginning of the end of the Brady-Belichick era) and then suffered a devastating hip injury that cast into doubt whether the Dolphins would even spend the #5 pick on him. So consider that when you assume that some team is going to tank for Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, much less execute the plan successfully. At the moment, though, Ohio State QB Justin Fields looms as an outstanding consolation prize for passer-shoppers who come up short on landing Lawrence. As of now, though, the quarterback class projects as somewhat thin. In terms of other skill-position players, Clemson RB Travis Etienne will come into the league with a higher upside than most at his position, but also the caveat that there’s already a lot of city miles on him at this point. WR comes yet again with a tremendous cast at the top level, headlined by LSU’s Jamar Chase, Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle, and Justyn Ross from Clemson. The best player serving as protection for his team’s skill players projects as one of the best in recent memory, Oregon OT Penei Sewell. Defensively, pass rushers and lockdown corners are always the players most in demand, and 2021 will have a good number of them: DEs Xavier Thomas of Clemson, Greg Rousseau of Miami and Micah Parsons of Penn State and CBs Shaun Wade of Ohio State (the latest in a long line from Corner State), Patrick Surtain Jr. of Alabama and Tyson Campbell of Georgia. Of course, everything mentioned above comes with the caveat that it is impossible to tell when or if there will be a 2020 college football season with the virus still looming as a threat at the moment – including how a postponement might potentially cause a delay to the 2021 NFL Draft, which is to be hosted in
Cleveland.

We at FantasyDrafthelp.com have devised a contest to help you and your friends measure your acumen on Draft Day. It’s the FantasyDrafthelp.com Mock Draft Game (credit to Fantasy Drafthelp.com contributor Bob Benak for inventing the game). Each participant submits a mock draft before the proceedings … and then all parties compete in a separate “live draft competition.”
Each board is scored separately, but the scores of the two are compiled to crown the Grand Champion of Draft Day. Here’s the scoring system:
Picks #1-4 are weighted at one point apiece. Picks #5-8 are weighted at two points apiece. Picks #9-12 are weighted at three points apiece. Picks #13-16 are weighted at four points apiece. Picks #17-20 are weighted at five points apiece. Picks #21-24 are weighted at six points apiece. Picks #25-28 are weighted at seven points apiece. Picks #29-32 are weighted at eight points apiece
Players may “roll over” their picks from the completed mock draft to the live draft if a player remains on the board … or they may cover themselves with another pick. Example: a player has Carolina taking Derrick Brown with the #7 pick on the mock draft they turned in at the outset. That would count for two points if the pick is correct. If Brown is still on the board when the Broncos are on the clock, the player is not obligated to pick Brown during the live draft. He may “roll over” the pick, choosing to try to win two points in both the live and completed mock draft categories. Or he may try to cover himself with another pick. For example, should he correctly pick Tristan Wirfs in the live draft part of the competition, he would gain the two points in the live draft but win no points in the completed mock draft part of the competition, in which he incorrectly picked Brown. So strategy is at a premium during this competition. This game also puts great emphasis on correctly making picks later in the first round, when chances for success are the most difficult. Picking a player accurately in the later part of the first round on both the completed mock draft and the live mock draft can ensure a thrilling, come-from-behind victory. If you and your friends want to take your enjoyment of Draft Day to the next level by competing and strategizing along with the wizards of the NFL, try our game and enjoy!

2020 Rookie Class Fantasy Analysis A strong class of WRs accounts for the overwhelming percentage of projected 2020 fantasy football production from the rookie class. The best prospect in a few years, Jerry Jeudy, and his Alabama teammate Henry Ruggs are among the candidates who could play at a high level on Day One, along with Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb, LSU’s Justin Jefferson and Clemson’s Tee Higgins. The next tier includes a number of intriguing players, such as Colorado’s Laviska Shenault, TCU’s Jalen Reagor, Ohio State’s KJ Hill and USC’s Michael Pittman, Jr. Tight end is not quite as highly-regarded a crop as a year ago, which should carry a bit of warning considering that TJ Hockenson, Noah Fant and Irv Smith were not immediate-impact players notwithstanding their billing. But Notre Dame’s Cole Kmet and LSU’s Thaddeus Moss could still provide fantasy-starter status with the potential for more than that in 2020. While none profile as first-tier fantasy stars, at least as rookies, there are four contributors who could contribute a very good amount in 2020. They are, in no particular order, Georgia’s D’Andre Swift, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, Ohio State’s JK Dobbins and LSU’s Clyde Edwards-Helaire. In a world with tremendous parity (once you get past Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes) among top-level QBs, even the franchise QBs in the Class of 2020 don’t profile as more than fantasy backups right off the bat. Nevertheless, they may well have a higher ceiling than other fantasy backups like Daniel Jones. First among these newcomers are, of course, LSU’s Joe Burrow and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. Oregon’s Justin Herbert and Utah State’s Jordan Love could fit this status as well, if they are drafted to start right off the bat – which may or may not be the case.

Why Value Matters In
Fantasy & Pro Sports Drafts By Rick Morris On our FANTASYDRAFTHELP.COM INSIDER webcasts, we’ve discussed this point many times, but we’re continually reminded of the need to readdress it: the very real link between fantasy sports drafts and the so-called real kind. 14 years ago, when the Buffalo Bills selected Donte Whitner with the eighth overall pick at a time when he was considered a fringe Top 20 player at best, FDH Senior Editor Jason Jones and I ridiculed the pick in a real-time webcast. We explained that Marv Levy, who was new to the Buffalo front office, clearly had no concept of value. Top10 picks must become franchise players at their positions. If, for whatever reason, you are fixated on a player unworthy of the draft slot, trade back and obtain the value collectively, through the desired player and additional picks, but always get value for your pick. And if a Top 10 pick must become a franchise player, then a Top 5 pick must become one of the elite players in the league. For a team like the Browns that squandered numerous draft picks under the auspices of such luminaries as Butch Davis, Shoebox Pete Garcia, Eric Mangini, Mike Lombardi, Ray Farmer and Sashi Brown, the tenth overall pick in the draft has to be a home run and cannot be used on a player not deemed safe enough by the collective brainpower of NFL personnel people. There is no margin for error. We at FDH don’t have to educate skilled fantasy sports owners on the concept of value. This is something they know, or at the very least intuit, as they go through their draft or auction preparation. We always say that you win by obtaining value with every pick. While that ideal is almost impossible, you have to come as close as you can. That means that your high picks have to perform at the level forecasted and your mid-round and lower-round picks must outperform their draft slots. We have always emphasized that the same precept holds true in professional sports drafts. Winning organizations make the most of their draft picks and they know how to proceed in a measured fashion. They do not panic.
