CANNED TUNA

Ecuador is the second largest exporter of canned tuna in the world. It is one of the world’s most consumed sea products, and it’scharacterized for its meat which is rich in Omega 3 and has only 12% fat content.

Nearly 400 thousand tons of canned fish are processed every year in the country. The varieties processed are: Skipjack, Yellowfin and Big Eye.

The sector exported $998.1 millions and a total of 194.6 thousand tons of canned tuna in 2014. The main export markets are Spain, U.S.A., Italy and Colombia.

PINEAPPLES

It´s the main exotic fruit exported to Europe.

They are a rich source of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes,vitamin C and flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium, copper, and magnesium; and fibre.

Ecuadorian papaya is mainly exported to the UK, Netherlands,Belgium and Peru.

Ecuadorian pineapples are known for its unique sweet flavour and scent, due to the privileged conditions of the Ecuadorian land.

There are approximately 3,300 hectares planted with pineaples inEcuador. The varieties produced are: Hawaiian and Golden Sweet. The sector exported $28.2 millions and a total of 57.3 thousand tons of pineapples in 2014. The main export markets are Chile, Argentina, Germany, U.K. and U.S.A.

MANGOES

Ecuadorian mango is known for its unique tropical flavor and scent, due to theprivileged conditions of the Ecuadorian land. Mangoes can be red or yellowdepending on the variety.

There are approximately 7,700 hectares planted with mango in Ecuador. Thevarieties produced are: Tommy Atkins, Haden, Kent, Keitt and Ataulfo.

Ecuador is ranked among the 15 top mango producers in the world. The sector exported $33.3 millions and a total of 45.9 thousand tons of mango in 2014. The main export markets are U.S.A., U.K., Colombia, Germany and Canada.

The raw material needed to elaborate the toquilla straw hat comes from a native Ecuadorian plant, similar to the palm. The fiber is cut from its stems and after a long process it is ready to be woven by hand into hats. Ecuador is specialized in producing fine hat varieties that meet high standards and requirements of international consumers.

The most famous models are: Classic Fedora, Classic Fedora Semifine, Golfer and Borsalino. The hats are sold in their natural color or dyed with vivid colors.

The sector exported around $10 millions of straw hats in 2014. The main export markets are U.S.A., France, Japan, Germany, Spain and U.K..

NEWS

• On the 1st and 2nd of September, 2 British importers participated in the Business Matchmaking “Aromas del Ecuador 2015”. More than 80 exporters participated in this event in Guayaquil – Ecuador. This is an annual event that generated about $21.1 millions in potential exports. The invited importers belong to the following sectors: Green coffee, cocoa butter, cocoa powder and chocolate.

• Exquisite Ecuador kicked off on the 27th ofOctober with an exclusive product pairing session held at Coya Restaurant in Mayfair. It was hosted by the Ecuadorean Ambassador to the UK and theEcuador Trade Commissioner in the UK, this unique experience introduced guests to the very best ofEcuador’s premium products - including its award winner chocolate, coffee from the Galapagos,avocado oil and wine. Other events throughout the week included an Ecuadorean Cuisine Master Class on the 30th of October. Renowned Chef Maria Ruth Moreno came all the way from Ecuador to lead the class by creating delicious authentic food from hernative country, with recipes designed to share the spirit and flavours of Ecuador. Dishes includeproducts from Ecuador as prawns, quinoa, chocolate,goldenberries, tuna, hearts of palm, chia seeds,plantain, pineapples, papayas and mangoes. Throughout this week, a giveaway of hotchocolate, chocolate mousse, bananas, prawnceviche and hearts of palm ceviche was held in the Ecuadorian restaurant Tostado located in Soho.
