Wherever serious sailing is going on, there is usually a Gaastra logo in sight. the Gaastra sponsorship program reaches from the small inland lakes of the netherlands to the vast blue waters surrounding the Caribbean island of Saint Barth. it includes partnerships in renowned regattas, like the Copa del rey, as well as sponsorship of professional sailing crews competing in the most challenging races. Azzurra is the sporting pride of yacht Club Costa Smeralda. the yachting team made the club’s burgee famous in the international regatta world and introduced the italian public to sailing with a heroic victory in the 1983 America’s Cup in newport. the passion ignited between italians and Azzurra with that impressive result was renewed four years later when the yacht Club Costa Smeralda presented its second challenge for the America’s Cup. this time Azzurra acted as Challenger of record representing the competing teams. After a few quiet years, Azzurra made a successful comeback in the 2009 / 2010 louis vuitton trophy.

officially named ‘Audi Azzurra Sailing team’, the legendary team then entered the Audi medCup, the leading professional circuit for inshore fleet racing and one of the most enthralling competitions on the world sailing scene. Azzurra competes in the transpac 52 class. Following a resounding victory in tests on the Palmavela regatta course at the beginning of the season, Azzurra went on to achieve several excellent results last year. 2012 promises to be even better. Pieter-Jan Postma (aka PJ) is a 30-year-old Dutch

competitive Finn sailor aiming for a podium finish

at the 2012 London Olympics. His journey towards

Olympic glory started at the age of 12, when he

competed in the european Championships in an

Optimist. PJ decided to enter the Finn class in

2006. He resumed intensive training and made

an impressive come-back. PJ achieved regular top

10 finishes in many international races. He won

the Dutch Open Championships in Medemblik two

consecutive times. And he won the bronze medal

during the ISAF World CuP in Hyeres and the Pre-

Olympics in Weymouth. With these fabulous results,

PJ secured a place in the official squad of the Dutch

Sailing Federation and his second place during the

ISAF world championchips in Perth was the icing

on the cake. Already qualified for London 2012, PJs

Olympic dreams are still very much alive.

every year about 3.000 crewmembers on nearly 600 yachts in

9 different classes come together at the lake of Geneva for the

world’s largest and most important inland water regatta: The Bol

D’Or Mirabaud, présenté par Corum. The history of the event begins

in 1939 with only 26 competing boats and very simple set of rules:

start in Geneva, race to the buoy on the other side of the lake at

Le Bouveret and get back as quick as possible.

Over time, the rules of the regatta have remained just as straight-

forward but the event itself has grown to become one of the most

popular nautical festivals in the world. The Bol D’Or attracts some

of the best skippers on the planet and also rolls out the blue carpet

for amateurs. They get a unique chance to race against renowned

international professionals. The climax of the The Bol D’Or traditionally

takes place at the prestigious yacht club of lake Geneve, le Société

nautique de Genève, where winners in all classes receive their much

deserved honor.

SneekWeek DuTCH SAILInG

Sneekweek started as far back as 1934 with only 177

boats. Over time it has become the biggest european

sailing event on inland waters. For 6 action packed

days, the Sneekermeer is taken over by almost

2.300 passionate participants and thousands of

spectators. Based on the weather and especially

wind conditions of the day, the race committee plots

courses for 42 different racing classes. A small

island in the lake, called ‘Starteiland’ is always the

centre of festivities and offers a great view on the

action. Because Gaastra’s history started in the

city of Sneek, we have always felt strongly connected

to this great event. That is why we have been a

loyal sponsor of the organizers kWS (Royal Water

Sports Association of Sneek) and the Sneekweek

for many years.

the Copa del rey is one of the most important sailing

regattas of the mediterranean sea and Spain’s most

historic and celebrated yachting event. Since 30 years

the regatta has been organized at one of the most

prestigious yacht clubs in the world: the real Club

náutico in Palma de mallorca.

this regatta brings together the best racers in the

nautical world and attracts a many notable fans. none

other than hrh king Juan Carlos of Spain has been

present at every edition of the event since the beginning.

Since the race was first held in 1982 the number of

participants, 50 boats in total, has almost tripled. With

competitors from all over the world in several classes,

including the Swan 45, tP 52 and melges 32, the Copa

del rey is now a sailing competition of the highest level.

The Jethou is a state-of-the-art IRC racing yacht built by Green

Marine in Lymington. It is named after one of the smaller Channel

Islands, situated just off the east coast of Guernsey. This Judel Vrolijk

designed 62-feet yacht features a fully optimized race rigging package

and an ultra light carbon fiber hull. It is purely built for speed. The

Jethou, owned and driven by Sir Peter Ogden, has already delivered

many impressive results in the Mediterranean inshore circuit.

The experienced crew, including Brad Butterworth, Stuart Branson

and Ian Budgen, managed to rack up a string of excellent finishes in

famous regattas such as the Palma Vela, Copa del Rey, Les Voiles de

St. Tropez, the Maxi Rolex World Championship and the Giraglia Rolex

cup. Ironically, the most impressive prize it has won so far, has got

nothing to do with speed. The Jethou was pronounced ‘best looking

IRC boat of the year!’ by Seahorse magazine. Looking at this elegant

black beauty with its high-tech looks, it is easy to imagine why.

It’s one of the best kept secrets in the nautical world: Les Voiles de

Saint Barth. A prestigious regatta on one of the French Leeward

islands of the Lesser Antilles. With a total area of only 21 square

kilometers and a population of less than 9,000, it is hard to imagine

that Saint Barth could host a world class event. But according to

renowned professional sailors, Les Voiles de Saint Barth

is going to be one of the main events of the Caribbean

yachting calendar in the years to come.

In April the conditions around Saint Barth are ideal for

racing. The trade wind, ranging from 17 to 32 knots, will

challenge even the most experienced crews. The ocean

around the island offers excellent possibilities to set-up

various types of courses; short coastal runs, Olympic type courses

and even an ‘around the island’ race. In 2011, the second edition of this

regatta already counted about 400 competitors on nearly 50 yachts

in 5 different classes. A staggering increase compared to the 23

boats in the first edition. Les Voiles de St. Barth has certainly etched

out a place in the growing list of “must do” Caribbean regatta’s.
