manual thoroughly so that youmay fully understand theadvanced features andcapabilities of your PRO-96scanning receiver.

Once you understand a few simpleterms used in this manual andfamiliarize yourself with yourscanner's features, you can putthe scanner to work for you. Yousimply determine whichfrequencies and trunking systemsyou want to receive, and thenprogram the scanner to scanthem.

A frequency is the receiving signallocation (expressed in MHz). Tofind active frequencies, you canuse frequency guides availablefrom your local RadioShack store, frequency listings posted on theInternet, or the built in searchfunction.

Your scanner’s SEARCH bankscontained preprogrammedfrequencies in the scanner’smemory (see “Searching aPreprogrammed FrequencyRange” on Page 52 for thefrequency list). You can evenchange the frequency range onone of the SEARCH banks (SR6)to customize your own searchparameters.

Once you identify the frequenciesyou wish to monitor, you can storethem into programmable memorylocations called channels, whichare grouped in channel storagebanks. You can then scan thechannel-storage banks to see ifthere is activity on the frequencies

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCANNER’S MEMORY ORGANIZATION

V-ScannersA V-Scanner folder contains acomplete, stored configurationprofile of your scanner’sprogramming. Certain currentscanner models allow the user toload, save and edit differentscanner configurations using aninterface cable, software and apersonal computer. The PRO-96V-Scanner feature extends thisfunctionality by allowing you tostore or recall up to elevenscanner configurations in V-Scanner folders on your scanner, without using a personalcomputer. You can use the V-

Page 17: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

17

Scanner feature to build and storeconfigurations for different areasor different scanner applications.Using the cloning feature it ispossible to exchange scannerconfigurations with your friendswithout losing your existing data.V-Scanners also provide a way foryou to easily back up yourprogrammed data withoutconnecting your scanner to apersonal computer.

Each V-Scanner folder stores allchannel storage banks, channels, trunking Ids, search settings, andother parameters associated withthe operation of the scanner.

CHANNEL STORAGE BANKSA channel storage bank is astorage area for a group ofchannels. Channels are storagelocations for frequencies.Whereas a channel can onlycontain one frequency, a channelstorage bank can hold 50channels.

To make it easier to identify andselect the channels you want tolisten to, your scanner divides thechannels into 10 banks (0 to 9) of50 (00 to 49) channels each, atotal of 500 channels. You can useeach channel-storage bank togroup frequencies, such as thoseused by different public safetyagencies and jurisdictions in yourarea. Channel storage banks canbe easily enabled or disabledwhile scanning by pressing thenumber key that corresponds withthe desired channel storage bank.

Page 18: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

18

For example, a particular citymight use four frequencies forpolice communications, and fourfrequencies for firecommunications. You couldprogram the police frequenciesstarting with 000 (the first channelin bank 0) and program the firedepartment frequencies startingwith 100 (the first channel in bank1). This gives you the ability toquickly select what you wish tomonitor by activating ordeactivating the appropriatechannel storage bank. Whenlooking at channel numbers, thefirst digit identifies the bank (0 to9). The second and third digitsidentify the channel within thebank (00 to 49).

CHANNELSChannels are storage locations forthe actual frequencies you wish tomonitor. Each channel can beconfigured with a radio frequency, the desired mode for thatfrequency, and settings to allow ashort delay after a transmission orlock the channel out fromscanning operation. A channel cancontain a conventional, non-trunked frequency, or a frequencyused in a trunking system.

SEARCH BANKSYour scanner has sixpreprogrammed search banksconfigured to search various radioservices, and one limit searchbank that you can configure. Youcan set the lower and higherfrequency limit in the limit searchbank.Ó

Page 19: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

19

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCANNER’S CHANNEL RECEIVE MODESYou can program each channelwith any one of six receive modes(AM, FM/Digital, CTCSS, DCS,Motorola, and EDACS).

Each receive mode affects howyour scanner operates whenscanning and receivingtransmissions.Ô

AM Mode (AM)The AM mode sets the scanner toreceive transmissions usingamplitude modulation (AM),primarily used for aircraft, military,27 MHz citizen’s band, someamateur radio, and somegovernment transmissions. (Referto “Specifications” on Page 110 fora list of the frequencies covered.)When the scanner receives atransmission on a channel set tothe AM mode, it always stops onthe transmission.

FM/Digital Mode (FM)The FM/Digital (FM) mode setsthe scanner to receivetransmissions using frequencymodulation (FM) and APCO-25digital modulation. FM is used formost public safety transmissions,as well as broadcast, business, and amateur radio transmissions.APCO-25 digital modulation isused in many newer conventionaland trunked public safety radiosystems. When the scannerreceives a transmission on achannel set to the FM/Digital

Ó HINT Ó For example, if youwanted to find activefrequencies between a

range of 150.1000 and150.5000, you would putboth of thosefrequencies in the limitsearch bank.

Ô NOTES Ô • Trunked modes

(ED and MOT) canonly be selectedfor frequenciesabove 137 MHz.

• Your scanner’sClosed Mode letsyou heartransmissionsfrom only thosetrunkingtalkgroups youspecify. For moreinformation, see“Open and ClosedMode Operation”on Page 87.

Page 20: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

20

mode, it always stops on thetransmission.

CTCSS Mode (CT)CTCSS mode sets the scanner toreceive transmissions usingfrequency modulation (FM) withContinuous Tone Coded SquelchSystem (CTCSS) subaudible tonecodes. CTCSS allows multipleusers to share a single radiofrequency without hearing eachother’s transmissions. In yourPRO-96 scanner, the CTCSSfeature can be used to block thereception of transmissions onshared channel to only those thatuse the CTCSS tone that you havespecified. CTCSS mode alsofeatures a Code Search settingthat allows you to instantly displayand store unknown codes into thechannel memory. CTCSS tonescan sometimes be heard as a low“hum” in the background of a voicetransmission. Many systems thatuse CTCSS transmit a special“turn off code” at the end of eachtransmission. The turn off codecauses a properly equippedreceiver to mute before thetransmission ends, eliminating the“squelch tail” burst of noise thecommonly occurs when the signalis lost. CTCSS turn off codeperformance can be affected byweak signals.

DCS Mode (DC)DCS mode sets the scanner toreceive transmissions usingfrequency modulation (FM) withDigital Coded Squelch (DCS)subaudible data signaling. DCS isvery similar to CTCSS, except that

Page 21: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

21

a digital code is transmittedinstead of an audio tone. LikeCTCSS, DCS allows multipleusers to share a single radiofrequency without hearing eachother’s transmissions. In yourPRO-96 scanner, the DCS featurecan be used to block the receptionof transmissions on a sharedchannel to only those that use theDCS tone that you have specified.DCS mode also features a CodeSearch setting that allows you toinstantly display and storeunknown codes into the channelmemory. DCS data cansometimes be heard as a low“purring” sound in the backgroundof a voice transmission. SomeDCS systems transmit a special“turn off code” at the end of eachtransmission. The turn off codecauses a properly equippedreceiver to mute before thetransmission ends, eliminating the“squelch tail” burst of noise thecommonly occurs when the signalis lost. DCS turn off codeperformance is typically moreimmune to weak signals thanCTCSS.

Motorola/APCO-25 Trunking Mode (MO)You can set your scanner so itdecodes the talkgroup IDs usedwith Motorola and APCO-25trunking systems and followstalkgroup calls in the trunkingsystem. This setting is called theMotorola mode.

Motorola systems are trunkingsystems used primarily bybusiness and public safety

Page 22: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

22

agencies to efficiently allocate asmall number of frequencies (asfew as three) to many groups ofusers (as many as severalthousand). To do this, each groupof users in the system is assignedto a specific talkgroup. Forexample, a city’s east side patrolofficers might all be assigned totalkgroup 2160. One channel inthe system is continuouslytransmitting data that identifieswhich talkgroups are active onwhich channel. In addition, thistalkgroup information is alsotransmitted as subaudible data oneach active channel.

When the scanner receives atransmission on a channel set tothe Motorola mode, it first decodesthe talkgroup ID data included withthe transmission. In the OpenMode, the scanner stops on thetransmission and displays thetalkgroup ID on the bottom line ofthe display. In the Closed Mode, the scanner only stops on thetransmission if the talkgroup IDmatches a talkgroup ID that youhave stored in the bank'stalkgroup ID list and have notlocked out.

Trunking systems covered by theMotorola mode come in fourcategories: Type I, Type II, Type I/II Hybrid and APCO-25. Eachcategory displays and usestalkgroup IDs in slightly differentways.

SS=Subfleet ID

Type I systems are usuallyorganized with different usergroups assigned to differentfleets.Ô

To properly map the raw Type Idata to the correct fleet-subfleetformat, you must program thecorrect fleet map into the scanner.Fleet map information is widelyavailable on the Internet for mostType I systems in use.

Type II and APCO-25 systemtalkgroups are identified by a 5-digit number. Valid Type IItalkgroup IDs are divisible by 16,while APCO-25 talkgroups are not.Use care to ensure that you enterthe correct Type II IDs into yourscanner. Type I/II hybrid systemsuse both fleet-subfleet and 5-digitformats for talkgroup IDs.

EDACS Trunking Mode (ED)You can set your scanner so itdecodes the talkgroup IDs usedwith EDACS (GE/Ericsson/M/A-COM) trunking systems. Thissetting is called the EDACS mode.

EDACS systems are usedprimarily by business or privatecommunications service providers,as well as by some public safetyorganizations. EDACS systemstransmit active talkgroupinformation only on a dedicatedcontrol channel.

EDACS frequencies are organizedin a specific order. Each frequencyis assigned a Logical Channel

Ô NOTES Ô • For example, a valid

fleet-subfleet IDidentifying alldetectives within apolice departmentmight be 000-12,where 000 identifiesall police users and12 identifies theDetective division.

• Tuning the scannerto an active controlchannel while inMotorola mode willdisplay the MotorolaSystem ID and theapproximate controlchannel messagedecode success rate. This information canhelp you identify theMotorola trunkingsystem that you aremonitoring and thequality of the controlchannel signal.

Number (LCN). For the scanner tocorrectly switch to an activefrequency, you must program thefrequencies in LCN order, startingwith Memory 01. EDACStalkgroup IDs are entered as a 4-digit decimal number from 0001 to2047 or AFS (Agency FleetSubfleet) number from 00-001 to15-157.

When there is activity on anEDACS system, that information issent out on the control channel. The scanner decodes the ID forthe active talkgroup. In the OpenMode, the scanner then goes tothe transmission and displays thetalkgroup ID on the bottom line ofthe display. In the Closed Mode, the scanner only goes totransmissions with IDs that matchtalkgroup IDs you have stored inthe bank's talkgroup ID list that arenot locked out

TRUNKING SPECIAL FEATURES

TRUNKING OPERATIONYour scanner tracks transmissionsfrom Motorola Type I, II and IIianalog trunked systems, Motoroladigital trunked systems, andAPCO 25 digital trunked systems.Your scanner also followstransmissions on GE/Ericsson/M/A-COM (EDACS) type systems.

Trunking systems allocate a fewfrequencies to many differentusers, and use a control channelto send system activity data to allof the mobile units operating onthe system. When a mobile unitwishes to place a call, it sends acall request signal to the trunkingsystem. The system chooses onefrequency from allocated systemchannels in that trunking systemand announces the start of the callon the control channel. Yourscanner uses the control channel

Page 84: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

84

data to follow activity on thetalkgroups you wish to monitor.

Traditional conventional radiosystems operate using a singleradio frequency for each group ofradio users, and in some cases, multiple groups sharing the sameradio channel in the samegeographical area. This frequentlyresults in heavy traffic and oftenrequires that radio users wait longperiods for the frequency to clearbefore they can place their calls.Trunked systems allow largegroups of radio users to use radiofrequencies more efficiently.Instead of selecting a specificfrequency to transmit on, atrunked system chooses one ofseveral frequencies when the 2-way radio user transmits. Thesystem automatically transmits thecall on that frequency, and alsosends a code that identifies that 2-way radio user’s transmission on acontrol channel.Ô

Your scanner lets you easily hearboth the call and responsetransmissions for that 2-way radiouser and therefore follow theentire conversation. For Motorola,APCO-25 and EDACS trunkingsystems, the scanner monitors thecontrol channel between eachtransmission to determine activetalkgroups.

Your PRO-96 automaticallycalculates Motorola and APCO-25trunking system voice channelfrequencies while decoding thecontrol channel. This eliminatesthe need to enter all the Motorolasystem frequencies.

Ô NOTES Ô To receive trunkingsignals from a trunkedradio system, you must:• Store all the trunking

control frequenciesfor Motorola orAPCO-25 systems inone channel storagebank, or

• Store all the trunkingsystem frequenciesfor EDACS in onechannel storagebank, and

• Configure thechannel storage bankID list for the type oftrunking systembeing monitored, and

• Enter ID codes intothe ID memory forthe bank

• For detailed trunkedsystem programminginstructions, see“ProgrammingTrunked Systems” onPage 32 and “StoringTalkgroup IDs” onPage 38.

85

The control channels for someMotorola trunked radio systemsmay change on a day-to-daybasis. To ensure that you will notmiss traffic when the controlchannel changes, enter all theknown control channelfrequencies into the channelstorage bank. If the controlchannel changes, your scannerwill automatically lock on to thenew control channel. If you do notknow which system channels areused for the control channeloperation, we recommend that youenter all the system frequenciesinto the same bank.Ô

When the scanner decodes theMotorola control channel and findstalkgroup activation on a voicechannel, the scanner displays thecontrol channel memory locationon the top line, the receivedfrequency with VC (voice channel)on the second line, the bank andcontrol channel memory locationnumber on the third line and theMotorola talkgroup ID number onthe bottom line.!

Setting Squelch for TrunkingFor optimal receiver performancewhen scanning both trunked andconventional systems, werecommend that you set thesquelch close to threshold.Navigate to a programmedchannel in manual mode. Whilethe channel is idle, turn thesquelch control fullycounterclockwise. You will hear aloud rushing noise from thespeaker. Turn the squelch control

Ô NOTEÔ Frequency fleet map andtalkgroup information arealso widely available onthe Internet. For example, atwww.trunkscanner.com.

! IMPORTANT !To listen to thetransmission, the modesetting of the trunkingcontrol or systemchannels must matchthe mode setting of theassociated ID list (MOTfor Motorola and APCO-25, or ED for EDACS).When an ID code isreceived, the ID list forthe bank is searched, and if found, the textname stored for the IDappears in the scanner’sdisplay. If not found, scanning resumesimmediately unless thebank is in open trunkingmode.

Ó HINTS Ó • Most Motorola

trunking systemsinclude a “hang time”where the channelremains assigned toa talkgroup for ashort period after theuser unkeys theirmicrophone. Thishang time is typically1.5 seconds but canvary among differentsystems. Thescanner’s trunkeddelay functionbegins after thishang time expires. Therefore, the totalamount of delaypresent after a userunkeys theirmicrophone equalsthe trunking systemhang time, plus anytrunked ID delay thatyou haveprogrammed into thescanner. Forexample, if you wishto wait a total of twoseconds for a replytrunked call, and thesystem you aremonitoring is using1.5 seconds of hangtime, you should setthe trunked delay forthat system to 0.5seconds. EDACSsystems do notemploy hang time.

DIGITAL OPERATIONYour scanner is equipped withadvanced Digital SignalProcessing circuitry to receive anddecode Phase 1 APCO-25 C4FM(four level FM) digital voicetransmissions. This section of themanual will help you understandthe differences between traditionalanalog and digital modulation.

For ease of use, your scanner isdesigned to automatically detectdigital modulation on anyconventional channel programmedfor FM/Digital (FM) modulation. Itis not necessary to configureindividual channels for digitaloperation.

Many digital trunked radio systemsare actually mixed mode systems

Page 93: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

93

that support both analog anddigital modulation. Certain usergroups on these systems may useanalog modulation, while othersuse digital modulation. Yourscanner will automatically detectthe type of modulation being usedand switch to the correctmodulation mode without specialprogramming or user intervention.

Your scanner also featuresIntelligent Adaptive DigitalTracking for optimal reception ofdigital signals from a variety ofdigital conventional and trunkedradio system types. No specialsound quality settings oradjustments are needed fordifferent C4FM system types.

Digital modulation represents abreakthrough in public safetycommunications technology.Digital modulation typicallyprovides a clear, distortion freeaudio signal throughout theservice area of the system you aremonitoring. However, there aresome important differencesbetween analog and digital voiceperformance that you should beaware of while scanning.

In most cases, digital voicetransmissions will be surprisinglycrisp and clear, and without noiseor distortion, even whencorresponding analog signals fromthe same system contain somestatic. However, if you are in alocation with marginal reception, you may find that the voice qualityof digital signals deteriorates veryrapidly, resulting in missingsyllables or entire words. If this

Page 94: PRO-96 Digital Trunking …scancat.com/OnLineHelp/OEM_Radio_Owners_Manuals/PRO-96-Owne… · PRO-96 Digital Trunking Scanner Catalog # 20-526 ! IMPORTANT ! ... Motorola analog and

94

happens, try reorienting thescanner or antenna for betterreception. You may also trypressing the ATT key and applyattenuation to reduce the overloadeffects of nearby strongtransmitters.

Under certain very weak digitalsignal conditions, the scanner maylose synchronization with thedigital signal and briefly revert toanalog FM, resulting in thereception of the raw, undecodeddigital signal. This is a normalindication of a digital signal that istoo weak to decode.

UPDATING THE DSP FIRMWAREIf necessary, the firmware for theDSP module can be updated bythe user in the field bydownloading a file from theInternet and transferring it to thescanner.

From time to time, improvementsmay be incorporated into the DSPfirmware. These improvementswill typically be designed toaddress issues that may bepresent with decoding the digitalaudio signals, and audio qualityimprovements. With updateableDSP firmware, you can ensurethat your scanner is using themost recent DSP versionavailable.

To update your scanner’s DSPfirmware, you will need thefollowing items:

A GENERAL GUIDE TO FREQUENCIES

Reception of the frequenciescovered by your scanner is mainly“line-of-sight.” That means youusually cannot hear stations thatare beyond the horizon.

Ham Radio Frequencies

Ham radio operators oftentransmit emergency informationwhen other means ofcommunication break down. Thechart below shows the frequenciesthe scanner receives that hamradio operators normally use.

Birdie FrequenciesEvery scanner has birdiefrequencies. Birdies are signalscreated inside the scanner’sreceiver. On rare occasions, birdies can cause interference tochannels you want to listen to.

Birdies typically occur withapproximately equal strength withand without the scanner’s antennaattached. If you receive aninterfering signal and suspect thatit is a birdie, try removing thescanner’s antenna. If theinterference disappears, theinterference may be the result ofother electronic equipment in thevicinity of the scanner. If theinterference remains, it is likely abirdie signal.

It may be possible to adjust thesquelch control and/or attenuatorto minimize the effects of a birdiesignal on scanning operation. Bothof these methods will likely havesome effect on the signal you aretrying to monitor as well.

FREQUENCY CONVERSIONThe tuning location of a stationcan be expressed in frequency(kHz or MHz) or in wavelength(meters). The followinginformation can help you make thenecessary conversions.

1 MHz (million) =1,000 kHz (thousand)

To convert MHz to kHz, multiplythe number of megahertz by1,000:

30.62 (MHz) x 1,000 = 30,620 kHz

To convert from kHz to MHz,divide the number of kilohertz by1,000:

127.800 (kHz) / 1,000 = 127.8MHz

To convert MHz to meters, divide300 by the number of megahertz:

300/50 MHz = 6 meters
